The next Civic Democratic Party (ODS) leadership election will be held on 13 January 2018. [2] The incumbent leader Petr Fiala seeks reelection. Shadow Minister of Education Václav Klaus Jr. was widely expected to run against Fiala. [2] He is considered to be the most visible politician of the party. [3] In December 2016, Czech bookmaker company Fortuna wrote a course for Klaus Jr. to replace Fiala on 20:1. [4] Klaus Jr.. decided to not run against Fiala. [5] Approximately 540 delegates were allowed to vote. [6] Fiala received 451 votes and was elected for another term.

Petr Fiala Leader of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS)

Petr Fiala is a Czech politician, political scientist and university professor who has been Leader of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) since 2014. He has served as Member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2013. From 2012 to 2013 Fiala was Minister of Education, Youth and Sports in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Petr Nečas and Rector of Masaryk University in Brno.

Background

Previous election was held in 2016. Petr Fiala was elected for second term. [12] Fiala's education advisor Václav Klaus Jr. rejoined the party in January 2017. [13] Klaus' father is a founder and the first leader of ODS and speculations that Klaus Jr. will become a rival to Fiala started. The leadership election will be held after 2017 legislative election. The result of the leadership election is expected be influenced by the legislative election. [14] [8] [15]

Jaroslav Kubera stated on 14 August 2017 that 2018 leadership election will depend on party's result in 2017 legislative election. Kubera believes that if ODS receives less than 10%, Fiala will definitely be replaced as the leader. [16] On 6 October 2017, Fiala statd that he doesn't intend to resign if ODS gets less than 10%. [17]

Jaroslav Kubera is a Czech Civic Democratic politician who has been Senator from Teplice since 2000 and the President of the Senate since 14 November 2018. Previously he served as Mayor of Teplice from 1994 to 2018. He is often described as one of the most interesting members of parliament due to his often comical or controversial statements.

ODS eventually received over 11% of votes and came second. [18] The result was received positively in the party. Václav Klaus Jr. on the other hand stated that 11% is a poor result that doesn't give the party a chance to uphold its ideas and also means that ODS will remain in opposition. [19] Fiala himself stated that he will most likely seek reelection. [20]

On 23 October 2017, Klaus Jr. stated that he believes he has a friendly relationship with Fiala and voices saying that he is Fiala's opponent are false [21] On 5 November 2017, Vysočina regional organisation of ODS nominated Petr Fiala for the position of leader. [22] Klaus Jr. ruled out his candidacy on 29 November 2017. [5] Fiala received nomination from Prague organisation on the same day. [23] On 1 December 2017, Fiala received nomination from Ústí regional organisation. [24] Central Bohemian organisation gave nomination to Fiala on 2 December 2017. [1] Liberec region gave its nomination for Fiala on 6 December 2017. [25] On 18 December 2017, Fiala received nomination from Olomuc regional organisation. [26] Petr Fiala attended a congress of Hradec Králové organisation of the party. He thanked members of the organisation for their work and stated that fight for survival of ODS is finished. Fiala then received nomination from the congress. [27] [28] South Bohemian ODS held a congress on 8 January 2018. It endorsed Fiala. The leader of South Bohemian ODS Martin Kuba stated that Fiala helped to get ODS from problems it had in 2013. He believes ODS doesn't have a persona that could replace Fiala. [29] Fiala himself attended congress of Plzeň region organiasation and received its nomination. [30]

Fiala received nominations from all 14 regional organisations of the party and was the only candidate. [31] [32] [33] Fiala talked about 2018 presidential election in his candidacy speech and stated that he wants Czech people to vote. He also warned against populist and stated that ODS should attract voters with ideas and a right-wing program. [34] Of 544 delegates, 503 attended party's congress and thus participated in the election. Fiala needed to receive at least 252 votes. He received 451 votes of 483. 12 votes were invalid while 8 delegates didn't vote. [35]

The Civic Democratic Party (ODS) leadership election, 2002 happened after party was defeated in legislative election. The incumbent leader Václav Klaus decided to not participate in the election. The main Candidates included Petr Nečas, Jan Zahradil and Mirek Topolánek. Petr Nečas was considered front-runner but unexpectedly lost in second round to Mirek Topolánek who was considered a Dark horse of the election. 353 delegates could vote.

Center for Civic Freedoms is a think-tank founded by Václav Klaus Jr. in January 2017, focused on civil liberties, economic issues, and education. Klaus said that his aim is for the institute to compete with the Václav Havel Library.

Center for Economics and Politics is a think-tank based in the Czech Republic. It was founded by leader of Civic Democratic Party Václav Klaus in 1998. Other people involved with CEP include Petr Mach and Jan Skopeček. In 2013, CEP was merged with Václav Klaus' Institute but still exists. It serves as Service organisation of Václav Klaus' Institute.

2018 Czech Social Democratic Party leadership election

A leadership election for the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) was held in 2018 following the 2017 legislative election. Jan Hamáček was elected the new leader of the party, defeating Jiří Zimola in the second round.

November 2017 Party of Free Citizens leadership election

A leadership election for the Czech Party of Free Citizens was held on 18 November 2017, after the party's unsuccessful results in the legislative election and consequent resignation of the party's leadership. The election was expected to be a two-way contest between Tomáš Pajonk and Jiří Payne, but on 11 November 2017, former leader Petr Mach announced his candidacy. The results were announced on 19 November 2017, with Pajonk defeating Mach by a large margin.

The Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM) held a leadership election on 21 April 2018. Snap election was held as a result of party's losses in 2017 legislative election. Josef Skála was first major candidate to announce his candidacy. The incumbent leader Vojtěch Filip decided to run for another term. MEP Kateřina Konečná became third major candidate. Filip and Skála eventually advanced to second round.

2018 Green Party (Czech Republic) leadership election

The Green Party (SZ) leadership election of 2018 was held on 20 January 2018. The incumbent leader Matěj Stropnický wasn't running for reelection. It will be held following 2017 legislative election in which party received only 1.46% of votes. Mayor of Prague 4 Petr Štěpánek was elected the new leader.

2018 Czech Pirate Party leadership election

The Czech Pirate Party leadership election of 2018 was held on 6 January 2018. It will be held after successful 2017 legislative election. The incumbent leader Ivan Bartoš ran for another term. Bartoš was the only candidate and was reelected by winning 276 votes. Only 17 members voted against him.

Next Czech presidential election

Presidential elections will be held in the Czech Republic no later than January 2023. The incumbent president Miloš Zeman is not eligible to run for another term. The election will most likely be direct. There has been speculation that Miloš Zeman will not finish his second term.

2018 Czech Senate election

Senate elections were held in the Czech Republic on 5 and 6 October 2018 alongside municipal elections, with a second round held on 12 and 13 October 2018. The Conservative Civic Democratic Party (ODS) won the election with 10 seats. Governing parties ANO 2011 and the Czech Social Democratic Party were heavily defeated, winning only 1 seat each. The Communist Party lost its last seat in the Senate when Václav Homolka failed to be re-elected, meaning the party would be without representation in the Senate for the first time in the history of Czech Republic. The election was considered the first major win for the opposition to Andrej Babiš' Cabinet. Commentators including Josef Kopecký also noted ODS confirmed their position as the main opposition party, ahead of the Czech Pirate Party.

2018 President of the Senate of the Czech Republic election

Election of the President of the Senate of the Czech Republic was held on 14 November 2018. It was held after 2018 Senate election. Civic Democratic Party nominated Jaroslav Kubera, Mayors and Independents nominated Jan Horník and Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party nominated Václav Hampl. Incumbent President Milan Štěch doesn't seek reelection. It was the first time in the history of the Senate that more than 2 candidates run for the position. Senate factions usually came to an agreement about the new President in the past.
