Claes Hellgren (born 27 February 1955) is a Swedish former handball player who played as goalkeeper, sports commentator and handball coach.
Hellgren started playing for the Irsta HF first team in the Division 3, the third tier in the 1972–73 season. After two seasons he moved to IF Guif, where in his first season was promoted to the Swedish top flight. In the four seasons Hellgren spent at the club they ended in the playoff once, where they lost in the semi-final to SoIK Hellas.
Afterwards, he moved to IK Heim, where he reached playoffs in four out of five seasons with the club, and became Swedish champions in 1982 and 1983. [1] They also reached the semi-final of the Cup Winners' Cup in 1978/80 where they lost to CB Calpisa Alicante.
In the 1983 summer, he, together with Björn Jilsén, became the two first Swedish players to join a foreign club, when they moved to Tenerife to join Coronas Tres de Mayo, [1] , a relatively newly created club that was about to play its fist season in the top flight. They finished 6th and Hellgren was awarded with the player of the season award.
After two seasons in Spain, he returned to Sweden and joined the team HP Warta, with which he reached the semi-final of the 1986 championship playoffs. In the 1986–87 season, the active career was put on a burner, to go into coaching where he was coaching the USA women's team.
From 1987 to 1990 he became the player-coach og his former club Irsta HF. In his third season at the club, they managed to be promoted to the top league. In the first season in the top flight, they managed to finish 4th.
In the last years of his active career, he played as a player coach for Norwegian side Stavanger IF.
In both 1984 and in 1985 he won the award for world's best goalkeeper. [1]
Hellgren debuted in a 19-16 win against Switzerland on 10 September 1976. He played for the national team for 12 years, where he competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics and in the 1988 Summer Olympics. [2] He also participated in the World Championship 3 times; in 1978, 1982 and 1986.
For a long time he held the record for most caps for the Swedish national team, but was eventually overtaken, and he was the first Swedish player to achieve 200 international matches. [1]
Hellgren had slowly become a more classical coach when he played less and less for Stavanger IF. He took over the USA women's team. In his first tournament, the Pan American Games, he managed to win the tournament. He took over his former club Irsta IF, where he didn't manage to bring them to the play-offs.
Between 1994 and 1996 Hellgren was the coach of both the US men's and women's teams. This was in the lead-up to Atlanta 1996. [1] At the 1995 women's World cup, the United States ended at 17th out of 20. At the Olympics games the team would finish last out of 8 participants. On the men's side, he would lead them to a 17th place out of 20 and at the Olympics a 9th out of 12th.
Afterwards, he took over the Swedish women's team between 1996 and 1999. [1] At the European Women's Handball Championship he finished 8th out of 12, but fail to qualify for the World Championship in both 1997 and 1999.
In 1998 he returned to club handball and became the coach of IF Guif. They gained promotion to the top flight in 1999, and the season after they were in the playoffs as a newly promoted team. After his tenure at IF Guif, he focused specifically on goalkeeper coaching at various clubs and national teams, and on individual coaching.
Additionally Hellgren has worked sa a teacher in maths, biology and P.E. From 2014 to 2017, he was fitness coach for Hammarby Fotboll. [3]
Hellgren was born in Norrköping to Anna-Carin and Swedish swimmer Rune Hellgren. [4]
Djurgårdens IF Ishockeyförening, commonly known as Djurgårdens IF, Djurgården Hockey, Djurgården, is a professional ice hockey team based in Stockholm, Sweden, affiliated with the Djurgårdens IF umbrella organization. Djurgården compete in the Swedish second-tier ice hockey league, the HockeyAllsvenskan. HK Drott Halmstad is a handball club, based in Halmstad, Sweden. The club has won the Swedish Championship eleven times, last in 2013. Together with Redbergslids IK, HK Drott have dominated Swedish handball between 1984 and 2003. Pär Jilsén is a Swedish former handball player and handball coach. He is the brother of fellow handball player Björn Jilsén, who he played with both with various clubs and on the national team. Pär Jilsén started playing handball at Irsta HF at the age of 7. He played in the club until aged 20, before moving to Gothenburg club IK Heim. In 1984 he moved to Redbergslids IK, where he played the rest of his career.
Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna Kristianstad, or IFK Kristianstad, is a Swedish professional handball club based in Kristianstad. They play in Handbollsligan, the top level of Swedish men's handball. The club was founded in 1899 as a multi-sport club. The handball team made its debut in 1925 and has been the only section of the club since 2000. The club plays its home matches at Kristianstad Arena.
Eskilstuna Guif is a handball club based in Eskilstuna, Sweden, which currently competes in Handbollsligan, the top domestic handball league. The club was founded in 1896, as Godtemplarnas Ungdoms- och Idrottsförening. They have reached the Swedish Championship final four times, but lost on each occasion. They also finished first in the regular season in 2011-12 and 2013–14, but were eliminated in the semi-finals in both these seasons. They have played 54 seasons in the top division, second only to Redbergslid, and are fourth in the all-time table of the league.
Lugi HF is a professional handball team from Lund, Sweden. Both the men's and women's teams play in the top division in 2023–24, Handbollsligan and Handbollsligan (women's).

The 1945–46 Svenska mästerskapet was the 15th season of Svenska mästerskapet, a tournament held to determine the Swedish Champions of men's handball. Teams qualified by winning their respective District Championships. 22 teams competed in the tournament. Majornas IK were the four-time defending champions, and won their seventh title, defeating Upsala IF in the final. The final was played on 31 March in Mässhallen in Gothenburg, and was watched by 1,990 spectators.

Irsta HF were a Swedish handball club based in Västerås. The club was founded in 1965. They were promoted to the top division, at the time known as Elitserien, in 1989. In their debut season in the top-flight, they finished fourth and qualified for the playoffs. They were eliminated in the semifinals by HK Drott. In the following season, they finished second in the league and defeated Ystads IF in the semifinals. They lost the final series against HK Drott. They participated in the EHF Cup Winners' Cup in 1991–92, but were eliminated by RK Crvena zvezda in the round of 16. They continued to play in Elitserien until they were relegated in 1996, but never again reached the playoffs.
Carl-Erik Stockenberg was a Swedish handball player, who played as a back player. He was a prolific goalscorer and also skilled at blocking shots from opponents. '
Axel "Acke" Ericsson was a Swedish football player and manager, best known for representing Hammarby IF and AIK.
Ulf Tomas Axnér is a Swedish former handball player and current head coach of the Danish club Team Esbjerg as well as of the Sweden women's national team. Between 2012 and 2020 he coached Lugi HF, except for a one-year break.
Robin Christoffer Hallberg is a Swedish former professional handball player who played as a goalkeeper. He represented Hammarby IF, Eskilstuna Guif, and IL Runar Sandefjord during a career that spanned between 2007 and 2019. A youth international for Sweden, he appeared seven times for the Sweden U20 team and represented his country at the 2009 Men's Junior World Handball Championship.
The 2021–22 Handbollsligan was the 88th season of the Swedish Handball League, the top men's handball league in Sweden. A total of fourteen teams contested this season's league, which began on 10 September 2021 and concluded on 27 May 2022.
