Clinical Science is a peer-reviewed medical journal that covers all areas of clinical investigation, with a focus on translational science and medicine. The journal is currently published biweekly by Portland Press on behalf of the Biochemical Society.

A medical journal is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that communicates medical information to physicians and other health professionals. Journals that cover many medical specialties are sometimes called general medical journals.

Medicine The science and practice of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of physical and mental illnesses

Medicine is the science and practice of establishing the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Medicine encompasses a variety of health care practices evolved to maintain and restore health by the prevention and treatment of illness. Contemporary medicine applies biomedical sciences, biomedical research, genetics, and medical technology to diagnose, treat, and prevent injury and disease, typically through pharmaceuticals or surgery, but also through therapies as diverse as psychotherapy, external splints and traction, medical devices, biologics, and ionizing radiation, amongst others.

Portland Press Limited is the wholly owned publishing subsidiary of The Biochemical Society. It is a publisher of journals and books in the cellular and molecular life sciences. The surplus from the sales of its publications are returned to the scientific community via the activities of The Biochemical Society.

History

The journal was established in 1909 by Thomas Lewis and James Mackenzie under the title Heart: A Journal for the Study of the Circulation.^[1]^[2] Lewis was the first editor-in-chief.^[3] In 1933, Lewis renamed the journal Clinical Science ( ISSN 0009-9287; 1933–1973), his interests having broadened.^[1] It was briefly retitled Clinical Science and Molecular Medicine ( ISSN 0301-0538; 1973–1978), becoming Clinical Science again in 1979.^[4]^[5]^[6]

Sir Thomas Lewis, CBE, FRS, FRCP was a British cardiologist. He coined the term "clinical science".

Sir James Mackenzie was a Scottish cardiologist who was a pioneer in the study of cardiac arrhythmias. Due to his work in the cardiac field he is known as a research giant in primary care, and was knighted by King George V in 1915.

An editor-in-chief, also known as lead editor or chief editor, is a publication's editorial leader who has final responsibility for its operations and policies. The highest ranking editor of a publication may also be titled editor, managing editor, or executive editor, but where these titles are held while someone else is editor-in-chief, the editor-in-chief outranks the others.

The journal was published by the Medical Research Society (founded by Lewis in 1930)^[1] from 1945 until 1961, and then jointly by the Medical Research Society and the Biochemical Society until 2003, when the latter became the sole publisher.^[7]^[8] It was formerly published by Blackwell Science.^[4]

The Medical Research Society (MRS) was founded by Sir Thomas Lewis in 1930. The Society was 'instituted for the purpose of advancing knowledge of the causes and processes of disease, by clinical or related experimental studies in man’. The MRS published the journal Clinical Science from 1945 until 1961, and then jointly with the Biochemical Society until 2003. The MRS continued to hold regular research meetings until October 2011 when it merged with the Academy of Medical Sciences. The Academy of Medical Sciences now awards an annual Medical Research Society prize for pre-PhD and PhD students.

The Biochemical Society is a learned society in the United Kingdom in the field of biochemistry, including all the cellular and molecular biosciences.

Wiley-Blackwell is the international scientific, technical, medical, and scholarly publishing business of John Wiley & Sons. It was formed by the merger of John Wiley's Global Scientific, Technical, and Medical business with Blackwell Publishing, after Wiley took over the latter in 2007.

Modern journal

Clinical Science is published monthly in print, in two volumes; from 2007, it has appeared in 24 online issues annually. Content from 1998 is available online in PDF and HTML formats, with papers from 2005 also being available in an enhanced full-text format. Papers are currently available free 12 months after the version of record is published online.

As of 2012^[update], its editor-in-chief is Rhian M. Touyz (University of Glasgow).

Founded by papal bull in 1451, it is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's four ancient universities. Along with the universities of Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and St. Andrews, the university was part of the Scottish Enlightenment during the 18th century.

Abstracting and indexing

Clinical Science is abstracted and indexed by BIOBASE, BIOSIS, CAB International, Chemical Abstracts Service, Current Contents, EMBASE, MEDLINE/Index Medicus, and the Science Citation Index. According to the Journal Citation Reports , the journal has a 2017 impact factor of 5.220, ranking it 17th out of 133 journals in the category "Medicine, Research & Experimental".^[9]

BIOSIS Previews is an English-language, bibliographic database service, with abstracts and citation indexing. It is part of Clarivate Analytics Web of Science suite. BIOSIS Previews indexes data from 1926 to the present.

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) is a division of the American Chemical Society. It is a source of chemical information. CAS is located in Columbus, Ohio, United States.

Current Contents is a rapid alerting service database from Clarivate Analytics, formerly the Institute for Scientific Information and Thomson Reuters. It is published online and in several different printed subject sections.

PubMed Central (PMC) is a free digital repository that archives publicly accessible full-text scholarly articles that have been published within the biomedical and life sciences journal literature. As one of the major research databases within the suite of resources that have been developed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), PubMed Central is much more than just a document repository. Submissions into PMC undergo an indexing and formatting procedure which results in enhanced metadata, medical ontology, and unique identifiers which all enrich the XML structured data for each article on deposit. Content within PMC can easily be interlinked to many other NCBI databases and accessed via Entrez search and retrieval systems, further enhancing the public's ability to freely discover, read and build upon this portfolio of biomedical knowledge.

The Biochemical Journal is a peer-reviewed scientific journal which covers all aspects of biochemistry, as well as cell and molecular biology. It is published by Portland Press and was established in 1906.

<i>Journal of Experimental Medicine</i> peer-reviewed scientific journal

Journal of Experimental Medicine is a monthly peer-reviewed medical journal published by Rockefeller University Press that publishes research papers and commentaries on the physiological, pathological, and molecular mechanisms that encompass the host response to disease. Virology is a peer-reviewed scientific journal in virology. Established in 1955 by George Hirst, Lindsay Black and Salvador Luria, it is the earliest English-only journal to specialise in the field. The journal covers basic research into viruses affecting animals, plants, bacteria and fungi, including their molecular biology, structure, assembly, pathogenesis, immunity, interactions with the host cell, evolution and ecology. Molecular aspects of control and prevention are also covered, as well as viral vectors and gene therapy, but clinical virology is excluded. As of 2013, the journal is published fortnightly by Elsevier.

The Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes is a peer-reviewed medical journal covering all aspects of research in HIV/AIDS, including basic science, clinical science, and epidemiology. It is currently published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. It seems that the editorial intent for its official title is still to end in … Syndromes, although the logo on its website shows … Syndrome as of June 2017, possibly by a graphic-art error.

The International Journal of Molecular Sciences (IJMS) is a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal covering research in chemistry, molecular physics, and molecular biology. Experimental & Molecular Medicine is a monthly peer-reviewed open access medical journal covering biochemistry and molecular biology. It was established in 1964 as the Korean Journal of Biochemistry or Taehan Saenghwa Hakhoe Chapchi and published bi-annually. It was originally in Korean becoming an English-language journal in 1975. In 1994 the journal began publishing quarterly. It obtained its current name in 1996 at which time it also began publishing bi-monthly, switching to monthly in 2009. It is the official journal of the Korean Society for Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The editor-in-chief is Dae-Myung Jue. It is published by the Nature Publishing Group. The full text of the journal from 2008 to the present is available at PubMed Central.

Translational Research: The Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine is a monthly peer-reviewed medical journal covering translational research. It was established in 1915 as The Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine obtaining its current title in 2006. Jeffrey Laurence has been editor-in-chief since 2006. He was preceded by Dale Hammerschmidt. It is the official journal of the Central Society for Clinical and Translational Research. It is published by Mosby.
