Catford Stadium was a historic greyhound racing stadium in Catford, a suburb of London.
It was a leading competition run over the longer marathon race distance and was inaugurated in 1942 over 810 yards. [2]
The event was introduced by a Catford greyhound owner called Mr Francis Rupert Victor Cobb (a brewer by trade). [3] He died in 1966 which led to the race also being known as a memorial race. [4]
Brewing is the production of beer by steeping a starch source in water and fermenting the resulting sweet liquid with yeast. It may be done in a brewery by a commercial brewer, at home by a homebrewer, or by a variety of traditional methods such as communally by the indigenous peoples in Brazil when making cauim. Brewing has taken place since around the 6th millennium BC, and archaeological evidence suggests that emerging civilizations including ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia brewed beer. Since the nineteenth century the brewing industry has been part of most western economies.
The race was discontinued in 1975 because other marathon events such as the TV Trophy surpassed it in regard to importance. [1]
The Television Trophy is a greyhound racing competition held annually. It was inaugurated in 1952 and shown on the BBC. A different venue was chosen each year over the marathon distance of the relevant track. The competition consisted of heats and a final one week later.
