According to the Brookings Institution, Colombo metropolitan area has a population of 5.6 million, and 752,993 in the Municipality. It is the financial centre of the island and a tourist destination. The postal headquarters is the General Post Office which is located in Colombo. The department itself comes under the purview of the Ministry of Information and Mass Media. It was formerly known as the Ceylon Post and Telecommunications Department and is one of the oldest Government departments in existence today.

Colombo (1931–1954) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career that lasted from April 1933 to June 1934 he ran eleven times and won nine races. Colombo was an outstanding two-year-old, unbeaten in seven races in 1933 and drawing comparisons with champions such as Isinglass, Persimmon and Bayardo. In 1934 he maintained his unbeaten record by winning the Craven Stakes and the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and then finished third as the favourite in The Derby. After one more unsuccessful race he was retired to stud, where he had some success as a sire of winners until his death in 1954.

Dissanayake Mudiyanse Anuradha Lanka Pradeep Jayaratne is a Sri Lankan politician. He is the current State Minister of Rural irrigation and tanks development and member of parliament. He is a former member of the Central Provincial Council and is the son of the former Sri Lankan Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne.
