Comes with the Fall is an American rock band from Atlanta, Georgia formed in 1999. [1] Since 2001, the lineup has been composed of William DuVall (lead vocals, guitar), Adam Stanger (bass), and Bevan Davies (drums, percussion). [1] Nico Constantine was the band's second guitarist before departing in 2001. [1] They served as Jerry Cantrell's backing band in support of his solo album Degradation Trip in 2002, [1] while DuVall joined Alice in Chains as lead singer during the band's reunion concerts in 2006, becoming an official member in 2008. [1] The band's name is from the cult horror classic Rosemary's Baby that an investigating Mia Farrow spells out on scrabble pieces.

History

Early years, formation, and Comes with the Fall (1996–2000)

In 1996, William DuVall formed the "over-the-top glam-pop" band Madfly, [2] in Atlanta, Georgia, with guitarist Nico Constantine, bassist Jeffery Blount and drummer Bevan Davies. After releasing two albums, Get the Silver and White Hot in the Black , [1] the band became Comes with the Fall [2] in 1999 [1] with Adam Stanger replacing Jeffery Blount on bass. [1] DuVall described the band's sound as "Jeff Buckley being molested by Black Sabbath". [3] The band name derives from the film Rosemary's Baby: Rosemary comes up with the words while trying to figure out an anagram (involving her mysterious neighbors who turn out to be Satanists) using Scrabble pieces.

The group recorded their self-titled album in Atlanta, [4] a year later, before relocating to Los Angeles, California [1] after playing all the clubs in Atlanta [5] and citing a lack of "infrastructure in Atlanta to support what [the band] were trying to do." [5] Within a month [5] of moving to Los Angeles, Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell, who introduced himself as a fan of the band, [2] joined them onstage for several shows. [4] [5] Their self-titled album was released the same year through DuVall's DVL Records. [1]

The Year Is One and Jerry Cantrell (2001–2005)

By 2001, Constantine had left the band, [1] to form Program the Dead, while Comes with the Fall were announced as the main support, along with Udora, for Jerry Cantrell's solo tour. [6] When Cantrell's then solo band mates, bassist Robert Trujillo and drummer Mike Bordin, were unavailable for shows, he enlisted Stanger and Davies to perform as his backing band. [6] They toured with Cantrell throughout 2001. [5]

The Year Is One , the band's second album, was released later in the year to positive reviews. [5] The following year, Comes with the Fall were announced to be Cantrell's opening and backing band for his tour in support of Degradation Trip , Cantrell's second solo album. [1] [2] [7] [8] Prior to the start of the tour, Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley was found dead in his condominium on April 20, 2002. [9] When questioned during an interview about how it affected the band, DuVall stated:

'[W]hen Layne died, it was tough because we were just about to go out on the road, and had to play through. [...] I lost my grandfather in the same week, so Cantrell and I both hit the road with immense personal losses dogging us. There were times on stage -- there was one show in Charlotte where it was just so heavy. I'm holding back tears onstage, and Jerry would start crying onstage too a lot at that point, and a lot of times we would just look at each other when we were singing the stuff because it was the only way...it was heavy. I can't quantify it really in words.' [5]

Comes with the Fall toured with Cantrell throughout 2002, [4] while they released a live album, titled Live 2002 , [1] the same year.

In 2003, Comes with the Fall toured with Atlantic group Dropsonic. [5] During the tour, Davies left the group to join Danzig, [10] with drummer Brian Hunter doing double duty performing with Dropsonic and Comes with the Fall. [5] Though Davies was announced as an official member of Danzig, [10] he would still be a member of Comes with the Fall with DuVall stating that his departure was only temporary. [5] The band released the live DVD Live Underground 2002 [1] towards the end of the year [5] and planned to record and release a new album by 2004. [5]

Davies recorded an album with Danzig in 2004, [11] titled Circle of Snakes , which was released on August 31 the same year. [12] The following year, Davies, along with Eric Dover, joined Cardboard Vampyres, a cover band formed by Jerry Cantrell and Billy Duffy [13] before joining The Mercy Clinic, formed by Patrick Lachman. [14]

Alice in Chains, The Reckoning, Beyond the Last Light, and hiatus (2006–present)

In November 2005, DuVall stated that Comes with the Fall had completed a new album, with a working title of Beyond the Last Light , and hoped to have it released in January 2006. [15] They previewed songs from the album on their MySpace, in February 2006 [16] while DuVall, along with various singers, performed with Alice in Chains, [1] who had reunited to perform a benefit concert for victims of the tsunami disaster previously, [17] at a tribute concert for Heart, [4] singing "Rooster" with Ann Wilson. [2] [18]

When Alice in Chains were to tour in tribute to Staley, DuVall was invited to front the group for the dates. [2] Comes with the Fall released the EP The Reckoning, and was released the summer of the same year.

In February 2007, the band announced their first tour dates in three-and-a-half years, performing material from the EP as well as their unreleased album. [19] They released Beyond the Last Light the same year [1] to positive reviews, with Greg Prato of Allmusic stating that "[m]usically, Comes with the Fall certainly has a soft spot for the big riff thang (DuVall also supplies six-string in the band), as evidenced by the Kyuss-esque "Rockslide" and the Audioslave-ish "Pale Horse Rider."" and that they were "a rock band in the early 21st century that won't sound out of place on rock radio, but that you also won't be embarrassed to admit liking" [20]

The same year, DuVall fronted Alice in Chains on the "ReEvolution Tour" with Velvet Revolver [4] while Davies temporarily joined Static-X, filling in for injured drummer Nick Oshiro, [21] as well as Invitro, filling in for Bennie Cancino on the Family Values Tour. [22] With all members active in other projects, Stanger is performing with The Young Royals, Comes with the Fall were effectively put on hiatus.

By 2008, DuVall had become an official member of Alice in Chains, releasing Black Gives Way to Blue , [4] [23] their fourth album and first since 1995's Alice in Chains , [2] on September 29, 2009. [24]

Layne Thomas Staley was an American singer and songwriter who was the original lead vocalist of Alice in Chains, which rose to international fame in the early 1990s as part of Seattle's grunge movement. He was known for his distinctive vocal style as well as his harmonizing with guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell. Staley was also a member of the glam metal bands Sleze and Alice N' Chains, and the supergroups Mad Season and Class of '99.

Jerry Fulton Cantrell Jr. is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is best known as the founder, lead guitarist, co-lead vocalist, and main songwriter of the rock band Alice in Chains. The band rose to international fame in the early 1990s during Seattle's grunge movement, and is known for its distinctive vocal style and the harmonized vocals between Cantrell and Layne Staley. Cantrell started to sing lead vocals on Alice in Chains' 1992 EP Sap. After Staley's death in 2002, Cantrell took the role of Alice in Chains' lead singer on most of the songs from the band's post-Staley albums, Black Gives Way to Blue (2009), The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here (2013) and Rainier Fog (2018), with DuVall harmonizing with him in the new songs and singing Staley's vocals in the old songs in live concerts.

<i>Degradation Trip</i> 2002 studio album by Jerry Cantrell

Degradation Trip is the second solo album by Alice in Chains guitarist and vocalist Jerry Cantrell, released on June 18, 2002. It marks his difficult transition from Columbia Records to Roadrunner, and was dedicated to Alice in Chains lead singer Layne Staley, who died two months before the album's release. The title was taken from the song "Solitude", the fifth track from the album. Degradation Trip featured two singles and was well received by critics, faring better than Cantrell's solo debut and bearing stronger resemblance to his work in Alice in Chains. The tracks "Anger Rising" and "Angel Eyes" were released as singles. "Anger Rising" reached No. 10 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks and stayed on the chart for 18 weeks. The album has sold 100,000 copies in the U.S. as of December 2002. In April 2019, it was ranked No. 21 on Rolling Stone's "50 Greatest Grunge Albums" list. Degradation Trip was released on vinyl for the first time on January 20, 2017, with a limited edition of 1,500 copies on transparent green vinyl.

Sean Howard Kinney is an American musician, best known as the drummer and co-founder of the rock band Alice in Chains. Kinney also founded the short-lived supergroup Spys4Darwin, and has collaborated with other artists such as Johnny Cash and Metallica. He played drums for his Alice in Chains bandmate, Jerry Cantrell's first solo album, Boggy Depot (1998). Since 2009, Kinney has been co-owner of the Crocodile club in Seattle. He was a guest drummer on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers in September 2018. Kinney has earned nine Grammy Award nominations as a member of Alice in Chains.

Inez has earned seven Grammy Award nominations as a member of Alice in Chains.

Bevan Davies is an American musician best known as the drummer for the groups Still Rain, Madfly, Comes with the Fall and Danzig while he is currently a member of MonstrO, a group he formed with former members of Bloodsimple and Torche. Previously, Davies had also been a touring drummer for Jerry Cantrell, Static-X, Engelbert Humperdinck, Cardboard Vampyres, The Mercy Clinic, Invitro and Bloodsimple.

Black Gives Way to Blue is the fourth studio album by the American rock band Alice in Chains, released on September 29, 2009, on the 17th anniversary of the release of their second album, Dirt. It is their first record without original lead singer Layne Staley, who died in 2002, and their first album with new vocalist and rhythm guitarist William DuVall sharing vocal duties with lead guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell, who sings lead vocals on most of the songs. The title track is a tribute to Staley featuring Elton John on piano. This is the first Alice in Chains album released on Virgin Records and their first venture away from Columbia, who handled all of their previous releases. The album debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, and was certified gold by the RIAA on May 26, 2010, with shipments exceeding 500,000 copies in the U.S. and over 1 million copies sold worldwide. The making of The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here lasted for more than a year and the release of the album was delayed numerous times. The band entered the studio in July 2011 to start work on their fifth album. Rainier Fog is the sixth studio album by American rock band Alice in Chains, released on August 24, 2018, through BMG, the band's first release on the label. The title was inspired by Mount Rainier, a volcano that overlooks the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area, and the title track is a tribute to the Seattle music scene. This is the band's third album with William DuVall sharing lead vocals with Jerry Cantrell, and the first Alice in Chains album in 22 years to be recorded in their hometown of Seattle. The album was partially recorded at Seattle's Studio X, the same studio where the band recorded their 1995 self-titled album. Rainier Fog is also Alice in Chains' third collaboration with producer Nick Raskulinecz, marking their first time recording three full-length albums with the same producer.

"Never Fade" is a song by the American rock band Alice in Chains and the third single from the band's sixth studio album, Rainier Fog, released on August 24, 2018. The song was written by vocalists/guitarists Jerry Cantrell and William DuVall, who also share lead vocals, with DuVall singing the verses and the pre-chorus, while Cantrell sings the chorus. "Never Fade" is a tribute to DuVall's grandmother, Soundgarden lead vocalist Chris Cornell, and Alice in Chains' original lead singer Layne Staley. The song was released as a single on August 10, 2018 via YouTube, streaming and digital download. "Never Fade" peaked at No. 10 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.
