Conjurer are an English sludge metal/post-metal band from Rugby, Warwickshire. They are currently signed to Nuclear Blast Records. [1]

History

Conjurer were formed in 2014 by Brady Deeprose and Dan Nightingale, with Andy Price and Jan Krause completing the lineup; with the latter previously playing keyboards for British death-doom band Esoteric. [2] The group built their following though frequent live performances. [3] Deeprose cited Rugby's central location within the UK as helping the band reach a variety of venues. [4]

In 2016, Conjurer released their first EP, "I" via Holy Roar Records. [2] Around this time, they also performed at both Bloodstock and Damnation heavy metal festivals. [5] [6] The band released their first full-length album, Mire, in 2018, stating influences such as Gojira and The Black Dahlia Murder. [2] [7] Bassist Andy Price left the band just after Mire was recorded, to be replaced by Conor Marshall. [8]

2018 also saw festival performances at ArcTanGent and 2000Trees, and a tour supporting fellow British Doom Metal band Conan. [9] [10]

In 2019 the band signed with Nuclear Blast. [2] [11] Conjurer released three new pieces of material in 2019; namely:

  1. "Conjurer on Audiotree Live", a live recording of the band playing 5 of their previously released songs in one of Audiotree's well-known live recording sessions;
  2. "Curse These Metal Hands", a collaborative effort with British post-rock band Pijn;
  3. "Conjurer x Palm Reader", a split with fellow British band Palm Reader, consisting of each band covering two songs from other well-known metal and rock bands. Conjurer provide the A-side of the record, covering "Vermillion" by Slipknot, as well as "Blood and Thunder" by Mastodon.

2019 also saw the band's appearance at Download Festival, [12] along with their first ever tour of the United States supporting Rivers of Nihil, [13] and a further North American tour supporting Voivod.; [14] as well as returning spots at both ArcTanGent [15] and 2000trees [16] music festivals.

In 2021, Conjurer played at the Download Pilot, a 2-day, 10,000-person capacity event which acted as part of the second phase of the British government's event research programme during the COVID-19 pandemic. [17]

Conjurer also played Bloodstock Open Air and Damnation Festival in 2021. [18] [19] Drummer Jan Krause left the band following performing at these festivals for reasons of mental health, though would still feature on 2022's "Páthos", having performed drums, keys, and samples. Jan was replaced on drums by Noah See. [20]

Conjurer released their second full-length album, "Páthos", in 2022. Paul Travers of Kerrang! declared Conjurer to be "one of the finest metal bands out there right now" based on this album. [21] They performed at Hellfest, Radar Festival and once again ArcTanGent in summer 2022, supporting End on a European tour. [2] Shortly thereafter, Conjurer also supported Carcass on their 2023 "Bloody Blighty" UK tour along with Unto Others. [22] The band are currently set to play a 6-date tour of small music venues with British Alternative rock group Unpeople. [23] The "United by Music" tour is one of many by the same name organised by the Music Venue Trust and funded by the UK National Lottery. The band were put forward for this tour by Kerrang! magazine, whose awards event is a charity partner of the Music Venue Trust. [23]

Curse These Metal Hands

"Curse These Metal Hands" is a collaborative project featuring members of Conjurer and Pijn. Originally formed for a one-off performance at ArcTanGent Festival in 2018, the project released their titular, four-track EP in 2019. [24] [25] [26] The project has since performed at ArcTanGent in 2019 and 2023. [24] [27] "Curse These Metal Hands" is named after a quote from the British sitcom Peep Show , [25] [26] namely one of Jeremy Usbourne and Super Hans's musical projects.

Musical style

Conjurer's music has been described as "non-specific" in terms of subgenre, with sludge metal, doom metal and post-metal elements frequently noted. [28] [29] [30] [31] [2]

Alestorm are a Scottish heavy metal band formed in Perth, Scotland in 2007. Holy Roar Records was an independent record label run by Alex Fitzpatrick. The label began in January 2006 and put out its first release, the Phoenix Bodies album, Raise the Bullshit Flag in June 2006. Fitzpatrick originally joked that the name was derived from a vision he had while using the hallucinogen LSD. According to Fitzpatrick, the name “Holy Roar” was derived from a Torche song with the same title.

Bossk are a British post-metal band formed in Ashford, Kent in 2005.

The Defiled were a four-piece British band from London mixing groove-laden hardcore/metal with electronic music influences. They have been described by Kerrang! magazine as "The saviours of UK Metal" and championed by Metal Hammer as one of the leaders in a new wave of British metal along with bands such as While She Sleeps, Bury Tomorrow and Devil Sold His Soul. The band have built a fanbase following support slots with bands such as Murderdolls, Static-X, Godsmack, Deathstars and Motionless in White as well as playing Bloodstock, Download and Sonisphere festivals.

Winterfylleth is an English black metal band from Manchester. Since their inception in 2006, the band has released seven studio albums and have become a popular act in both the English underground metal scene and the wider international metal arena. Winterfylleth are self-described as "English Heritage Black Metal" and is often considered to be musical 'brothers-in-arms' with fellow English black metal band Wodensthrone owing to the common lyrical and aesthetic themes they share. The band takes its name from the Old English word 'Winterfylleth', which translates into modern English as 'Winter Full Moon' and is signified by the arrival of the first full moon of winter.

Oathbreaker is a Belgian band from Flanders, formed in 2008 and currently signed to Deathwish Inc. The band consists of guitarists Lennart Bossu and Gilles Demolder, drummer Wim Coppers, and vocalist Caro Tanghe who performs both screamed and sung vocals. They are a part of Church of Ra, an artistic collective started by Amenra, a band of which Lennart and Caro are also members. Like Amenra, Oathbreaker emerged from the Belgian underground hardcore punk scene but integrated extreme metal and art music aesthetics.

<i>When I Die, Will I Get Better?</i> 2020 studio album by Svalbard

When I Die, Will I Get Better? is the third studio album by British post-hardcore band Svalbard, released on 25 September 2020. Recorded in February 2020 with long-time producer Lewis Johns, the album incorporates more of a shoegaze-influenced sound in contrast to Svalbard's previous album It's Hard to Have Hope (2018), as well as more clean singing, vocal harmonies, and complex instrumental parts. Lyrically, it discusses themes of mental health, with a focus on depression, alongside feministic topics including domestic abuse, online sexism and objectification. It was Svalbard's only album with bassist Alex Heffernan.

<i>Profound Morality</i> 2022 EP by Heriot

Profound Morality is the third extended play by British metalcore band Heriot, released on 29 April 2022 through Church Road Records. It is the band's first release as a quartet, featuring guitarist and vocalist Debbie Gough, who joined in 2019. The band wrote and recorded the bulk of the EP in five days at their rehearsal space in Bristol in April 2021. Whilst primarily categorized as a metalcore release, Profound Morality's sound combines elements from a variety of genres, including extreme metal, hardcore, industrial and noise music. Its lyrics, inspired by the "rhetoric of wealth and class" during the COVID-19 pandemic, focus on accountability, blame, integrity, questioning power, and identifying your morals.
