Coton is both a hamlet [1] and suburb [2] of Gnosall in the Borough of Stafford in Staffordshire, England. [3] It is located to the southwest of Gnosall and is close to the village of Gnosall Heath. It is also midway between Newport and Stafford. The hamlet of Coton End also forms part of Coton.
Coton grew around the Coton Mill, which was opened by the Shropshire Union Canal and built by Charles Madeley. The mill was steam-powered and dealt in both flour and animal feed. The mill was then bought by Amos Tomkinson. After Tomkinson's death, the mill was bought by William Wilder and came under the ownership of the Wilder family. It continued to be operated until the late 19th century.
The mill was closed in 1914 and were converted into different uses. First as a bakers, then a grocers until its closure in the 1970s. After the closure, parts of the mill were demolished which included the building and warehouse on Plardwick Road. The remaining buildings were restored and converted into private residences. [4]
The hamlet is mostly residential with a few farms and open fields. The nearest amenities are in neighbouring Gnosall Heath and Gnosall.
The hamlet is served by buses from Stafford to Newport and Telford. [5]
