Cristian Taraborrelli (born 1970[ citation needed ] in Rome) is an Italian theatre, opera and cinema director.
Taraborrelli [1] [2] [3] began his theatrical activities in the early 1990s. He is a set designer, costume designer, and director, whose work ranges from experimental theater to opera. [4] [5] [6]
His style is characterized by a constant search for balance in the instability and metamorphosis of the theatrical machine, drawing on suspensions, reversals, doublings, deformations, disproportions, and framing. [7]
Taraborrelli is known for his creative and innovative approach to set and costume design. He creates visual worlds that closely interact with the music and text, enriching them with new meanings. His set designs often feature an abstract and metaphorical language that conveys the emotions and themes of the work. He uses unusual materials and cutting-edge technological solutions to create setups that amaze and engage the audience. In his costumes, he seeks a balance between respecting tradition and stylistic innovation. He reinterprets the forms and symbols of the past in a contemporary key to create garments that characterize the characters and express their psychology. [3] [8] [9]
In the early 1990s, his collaborations with Giorgio Barberio Corsetti and Fabio Massimo Iaquone involved him in experimental theater projects.
His authorial career became more defined from 2006, gaining greater freedom in directly staging performances. [10] In 2006, he received the Franco Abbiati Prize from the Italian music critics, and in 2009, he won the Prix du Syndicat de la critique [11] for best set design for Gertrude - The Cry.
In 2003, he started as an Opera Director with his directorial debut at the Pergolesi-Spontini Festival with Lalla Rukh ovvero Guancia di tlipano [12] and continued directing with La Jura [13] (2015),Il colore del sole [14] (2017), FRAM(M)ENTI (2018), La sonnambula [15] (2019 - 2021), I pagliacci [16] [17] [18] [19] (2021), and Angelica Cunta [20] (2021).
Taraborrelli's art, including the setup of the Aquarium of Genoa and various installations over the past two decades, clearly expresses a departure not only from the physical space of the theater but also from the conceptual one, from traditionally understood theater.

From the creation of his "sketches" of the set, which were more like works of art in and of themselves to the smallest change in an extra’s costume, he was a true perfectionist preoccupied with every detail. His productions graced the stage of countless opera houses and theaters, amongst them La Scala di Milano, Teatro Regio of Parma, The Metropolitan Opera House, American Ballet Theatre and the Festival of Two Worlds at Spoleto, where he collaborated for many years, alongside his dear friend, Gian Carlo Menotti. The Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto founded in 1947 in Spoleto, by Adriano Belli created a special award carrying the name of Pier Luigi Samaritani, awarded each year to the set designer with the best set design of the opera season.
