The Crunchyroll Anime Award for Anime of the Year is the highest award given at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards since its inaugural edition in 2017. It is given for the best anime series from the previous year. Winners are determined through a combined voting process by judges and public voting. [1]
Yaoi sports anime Yuri on Ice by MAPPA first won the award in 2017. [2] In its latest edition, the award was won by the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen by MAPPA, which also became the first anime to win the top prize twice. [3] MAPPA received ten nominations and three wins for the award, the most of any studio to date. Wit Studio and Bones each received six and five nominations for the award respectively.

As of 2023, 50 nominations have been given to 24 different studios, of which there are 3 joint nominations consisting of two studios, given a total of 53 nominees so far. Only Bones, Wit Studio, and MAPPA, have received multiple nominations in one year, with Bones done it twice in 2016 and 2019.
MAPPA Co., Ltd. is a Japanese animation studio headquartered in Suginami, Tokyo. Founded in 2011 by Madhouse co-founder and producer Masao Maruyama, it has produced anime works including Terror in Resonance, Yuri!!! on Ice, In This Corner of the World, Kakegurui, Banana Fish, Zombie Land Saga, Dororo, Dorohedoro, The God of High School, Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan: The Final Season, Vinland Saga Season 2, Chainsaw Man, and Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku. MAPPA is an acronym for Maruyama Animation Produce Project Association.
The Crunchyroll Anime Awards, also known simply as The Anime Awards, are awards given annually by the anime streaming service Crunchyroll to recognize the best anime of the previous year. Announced in December 2016, the awards were first presented in January 2017. Crunchyroll describes it as a "global event that recognizes the anime shows, characters, and artists that fans around the world love most."
Jujutsu Kaisen is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. It has been serialized in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump since March 2018, with its chapters collected in 26 tankōbon volumes as of April 2024. The story follows high school student Yuji Itadori as he joins a secret organization of Jujutsu Sorcerers to eliminate a powerful Curse named Ryomen Sukuna, of whom Yuji becomes the host. Jujutsu Kaisen is a sequel to Akutami's Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, serialized in Shueisha's Jump Giga from April to July 2017, later collected in a tankōbon volume, retroactively titled as Jujutsu Kaisen 0, in December 2018.
Chainsaw Man is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto. Its first arc was serialized in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump from December 2018 to December 2020; its second arc began serialization in Shueisha's Shōnen Jump+ app and website in July 2022. Its chapters have been collected in 17 tankōbon volumes as of April 2024.
The 5th Crunchyroll Anime Awards were held on February 19, 2021, honoring excellence in anime from 2020. Crunchyroll announced the list of categories as well as the judges on December 16, 2020. They noted that the categories used in the previous edition were to be used in this edition as well. They also noted that the number of judges increased. Nominees were announced on January 15, the first day of voting. It ran until January 22. There were 15 million votes cast, with a majority coming from the United States, Mexico, and Brazil. The awards ceremony was streamed live on February 19 as a digital event. It was virtually hosted by Tim Lyu with Crunchyroll-Hime, the official mascot of Crunchyroll. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Crunchyroll noted that the show "will look different."
Yuji Itadori is a fictional character and the main protagonist of the manga series Jujutsu Kaisen created by Gege Akutami. Yuji is a first-year Jujutsu Sorcerer at Tokyo Jujutsu High who is thrown into the world of sorcery after he ate a Cursed Object: a finger belonging to Ryomen Sukuna, a powerful Cursed Spirit—a being manifested from Cursed Energy from the negative emotions flowing from humans. With his classmates, Yuji exorcises Curses while trying to honor his grandfather's legacy and save others unconditionally so that when he is executed after eating all twenty fingers, he will not be alone in his death.
Hiroshi Seko is a Japanese anime screenwriter. After serving as an episode screenwriter, he was given the role of head screenwriter for Seraph of the End. Since then, he has done screenwriting for many other series, such as critically acclaimed titles Attack on Titan, Mob Psycho 100, Vinland Saga,Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man. He frequently collaborates with Wit Studio and MAPPA.
Taku Kishimoto is a Japanese anime screenwriter. After leaving Studio Ghibli, he was put in charge of screenwriting for Bunny Drop. Following its completion, he has worked on several series, some of which are Haikyu!!, Erased, and the remake of Fruits Basket.
Sunghoo Park is a South Korean anime director and animator based in Japan. He is best known for directing the anime television series The God of High School and the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Hiroaki Tsutsumi is a Japanese musician and composer best known for his work on various anime television series. He started his musical career at the age of 14 when he first started playing the guitar. After winning a guitar contest three years later, he decided to become a professional musician and later graduated from Kunitachi College of Music.
Satoru Gojo is a fictional character from Gege Akutami's manga Jujutsu Kaisen. He was first introduced in Akutami's short series Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School as the mentor of the cursed teenager Yuta Okkotsu at Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School. This miniseries became the prequel Jujutsu Kaisen 0 of Jujutsu Kaisen. In Jujutsu Kaisen, Gojo takes the same role but mentors the student Yuji Itadori who suffers a similar Curse, helping him become stronger while protecting other characters in the series.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a 2021 Japanese animated dark fantasy film. It is based on the 2017 manga Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which is itself a prequel to the manga series Jujutsu Kaisen, both mangas having been written by Gege Akutami. It was directed by Sunghoo Park from a screenplay by Hiroshi Seko, and stars Megumi Ogata, Kana Hanazawa, Mikako Komatsu, Kōki Uchiyama, Tomokazu Seki, Yuichi Nakamura, and Takahiro Sakurai. The film follows Yuta Okkotsu, a young student who becomes a sorcerer and seeks to control the Cursed Spirit of his childhood friend Rika Orimoto in Jujutsu High, alongside other skilled sorcerers in training.
Yuta Okkotsu is the protagonist of Gege Akutami's manga Jujutsu Kaisen 0. He is a teenager who is surrounded and helped by the Cursed Spirit of Rika Orimoto, his childhood friend who died six years before the story and is cursed because both of them promised to get married when they grow up. During his teenage years, Yuta meets Satoru Gojo, a Jujutsu Sorcerer under whose guidance he joined Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School to control Rika's Curse. Yuta also appears in the sequel Jujutsu Kaisen as an experienced warrior.
The 6th Crunchyroll Anime Awards was held on February 9, 2022, honoring excellence in anime from 2021. Crunchyroll opened the public nominations for judges on October 14, 2021, running until October 20. On December 16, Crunchyroll revealed the list of judges. Nominees was announced on January 18. Voting ended on January 25. Winners was announced on February 9.
Anairis Quiñones is an American voice actress. After watching several anime dubs as a child, Quiñones was inspired to pursue a career in voice acting, which she began in 2009. Some of her noteworthy roles include Miyuki Shiba in The Irregular at Magic High School, Echidna in Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, Rika Kawai in Wonder Egg Priority, Nessa in Pokémon: Twilight Wings, and Kimberly in Street Fighter 6.
The 7th Crunchyroll Anime Awards was held on March 4, 2023, at the Main Banquet Hall of the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa in Tokyo, Japan. It was the first ceremony to be held in person since 2020; both ceremonies in 2021 and 2022 were held virtually. Additionally, it was the first ceremony to be held in Japan, as previous physical ceremonies were held in the United States. Anime released on television or online in Japan from November 2021 to September 2022 were eligible for nominations for this edition. The ceremony was hosted by voice actress Sally Amaki and presenter Jon Kabira, with Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida opening the show. Previous winners ALI and AKLO, Yuki Kajiura, and Kohta Yamamoto performed at the ceremony, while singer Haruka Kaki of Nogizaka46, comedian Kendo Kobayashi, entertainer Roland, and actress Sawa Suzuki presented the awards to the winners together with various voice actors and entertainers. Sony Music Solutions collaborated with Crunchyroll in planning and operations, with Telescope Inc. administering the voting process. Crunchyroll streamed the ceremony live on YouTube and Twitch, as well as on SonyLIV in India. Voting for the Anime of the Year category included "social voting" for the first time, which allowed Twitter users to vote for the category by posting the necessary hashtags or by retweeting. The list of nominees were announced on the first day of voting, January 19. Voting closed on January 25.

The 8th Crunchyroll Anime Awards were held at the Main Banquet Hall of the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa in Tokyo, Japan. It was hosted by Sally Amaki and Jon Kabira, who hosted the previous ceremony. Anime released in full or partially between October 2022 and September 2023 are eligible for nominations for this edition. This edition featured 32 categories, most of which are presented in the previous ceremony and include industry awards for Best Cinematography and Art Direction for the first time, as well as the return of Best Slice of Life from 2018. Categories and the list of judges were revealed on December 5. Nominees were revealed on the first day of public voting, January 17. Voting closed on January 27. Presenters for the ceremony on March 2 was announced on January 17, and included American rapper Megan Thee Stallion, Canadian actress Iman Vellani, and Japanese singer LiSA, with Sony Group Corporation CEO Kenichiro Yoshida giving opening remarks.
