The 8th Crunchyroll Anime Awards were held at the Main Banquet Hall of the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa in Tokyo, Japan. [1] It was hosted by Sally Amaki and Jon Kabira, who hosted the previous ceremony. Anime released in full or partially between October 2022 and September 2023 are eligible for nominations for this edition. This edition featured 32 categories, most of which are presented in the previous ceremony and include industry awards for Best Cinematography and Art Direction for the first time, as well as the return of Best Slice of Life from 2018. Categories and the list of judges were revealed on December 5. [2] Nominees were revealed on the first day of public voting, January 17. Voting closed on January 27. [1] [3] Presenters for the ceremony on March 2 was announced on January 17, and included American rapper Megan Thee Stallion, Canadian actress Iman Vellani, and Japanese singer LiSA, with Sony Group Corporation CEO Kenichiro Yoshida giving opening remarks. Chainsaw Man received the most nominations with 25, followed by Jujutsu Kaisen at 17, and Oshi no Ko and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba at 12. [5] The Anime of the Year contenders include previous winners Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan , and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. MAPPA is the most represented animation studio, with five series nominated in various categories, including a record three series for the top prize. One Piece was nominated again for Best Continuing Series after it won the award previously, along with Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story was nominated again for Best Original Anime, while Best Animation saw previous contenders and winners Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Mob Psycho 100 . Akira Matsushima received a nomination for Best Character Design for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba again, after winning it in the last edition. Yuichiro Hayashi was nominated again for Best Director for his work on Attack on Titan. Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto was nominated again for Best Score, along with Yuki Kajiura and Go Shiina for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Atsumi Tanezaki and Yuki Kaji were nominated again for Best VA Performance (Japanese) for Anya Forger and Eren Jaeger respectively.

Among genre categories, Spy × Family was nominated again for Best Comedy, and Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba for Best Action. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba was also nominated again for Best Fantasy, along with Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation and Ranking of Kings . Attack on Titan was nominated again as well for Best Drama. For character categories, Eren Jaeger and Shigeo Kageyama was nominated for Best Main Character again. Two characters from Jujutsu Kaisen, Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto, was nominated for Best Supporting Character, while Anya Forger of Spy × Family and Bojji of Ranking of Kings were nominated again for "Must Protect At All Costs" Character. Three anime songs nominated for Best Anime Song were nominated for Best Opening Sequence as well: "Idol" by Yoasobi, "Kick Back" by Kenshi Yonezu, and "Where Our Blue Is" by Tatsuya Kitani. Both the opening and ending themes for Oshi no Ko, Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead were nominated in their respective categories.

The show begins with a pre-show, where winners of the voice acting categories, opening and ending sequences, cinematography, and genre categories except for Best Romance and Slice of Life, were announced. The main show opened with the performance of the awards' theme song, composed by Hiroyuki Sawano. An orchestral performance featuring classic anime opening themes were performed. Shing02 performed "Battlecry" from Samurai Champloo , and Yoasobi performed "Idol" after winning Best Anime Song. The Anime of the Year award was presented by American rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

Jujutsu Kaisen won 11 awards, including the Anime of the Year, which it previously won in 2020, becoming the first anime to win the top prize twice. Its director, Shōta Goshozono, won Best Director. Additionally, the series won the inaugural award for Best Cinematography. Suzume won Best Film; the award was received by its director Makoto Shinkai. One Piece and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba won again the awards for Best Continuing Series and Best Animation respectively. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba also won the inaugural award for Best Art Direction. Chainsaw Man won Best New Series, while Buddy Daddies won Best Original Anime. Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Horimiya: The Missing Pieces , Spy × Family, Bocchi the Rock! , and Attack on Titan won the genre awards for Best Action, Best Fantasy, Best Romance, Best Comedy, Best Slice of Life, and Best Drama respectively. Monkey D. Luffy of One Piece won Best Main Character, while Satoru Gojo of Jujutsu Kaisen won Best Supporting Character. Anya Forger won the "Must Protect at All Costs" Character award again. Meanwhile, both the opening and ending sequences of Jujutsu Kaisen, "Where Our Blue Is" by Tatsuya Kitani and "Akari" by Soushi Sakiyama, won the awards for Best Opening Sequence and Best Ending Sequence respectively. "Idol" by Yoasobi won Best Anime Song while Kohta Yamamoto and Hiroyuki Sawano won Best Score for their work on the first special in the final season of Attack on Titan. Yuichi Nakamura won Best Voice Acting (Japanese) for his work as Satoru Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen, while Ryan Colt Levy won Best Voice Acting (English) for his work as Denji in Chainsaw Man. [6]

Jujutsu Kaisen is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. It has been serialized in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump since March 2018, with its chapters collected and published in 25 tankōbon volumes as of January 2024. The story follows high school student Yuji Itadori as he joins a secret organization of Jujutsu Sorcerers to eliminate a powerful Curse named Ryomen Sukuna, of whom Yuji becomes the host. Jujutsu Kaisen is a sequel to Akutami's Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, serialized in Shueisha's Jump Giga from April to July 2017, later collected in a tankōbon volume, retroactively titled as Jujutsu Kaisen 0, in December 2018.

Tanjiro Kamado is a fictional character and the protagonist of Koyoharu Gotouge's manga Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Tanjiro goes on a quest to restore the humanity of his sister, Nezuko, who was turned into a demon after his family was killed by Muzan Kibutsuji following an attack that resulted in the death of his other relatives. After an encounter with Giyu Tomioka, a demon slayer, Tanjiro is recruited by Giyu to also become a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and avenge his family. Besides Ufotable's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba anime adaptation, Tanjiro has also appeared in a light novel that acts as a prequel to the manga.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, also known simply as Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, is a 2020 Japanese animated dark fantasy action film based on the "Mugen Train" arc of the 2016–20 manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba by Koyoharu Gotouge. It is a direct sequel to the first season of the anime television series as well as its first film adaptation. The film was directed by Haruo Sotozaki and written by Ufotable staff members.

The 4th Crunchyroll Anime Awards were held on February 15, 2020, honoring excellence in anime from 2019. Crunchyroll announced the categories and the list of judges for the 2020 awards on December 17, while also noting that the list was still not complete. They also noted that they've increased their judges by over 50%, with more than half of them coming from outside the United States. Nominees were announced on the first day of voting, January 10. Voting ran until January 17, with the results announced on February 15. The show was hosted by WWE wrestler Xavier Woods and Tim Lyu. Several personalities in the anime community were invited to present the awards.

The 5th Crunchyroll Anime Awards were held on February 19, 2021, honoring excellence in anime from 2020. Crunchyroll announced the list of categories as well as the judges on December 16, 2020. They noted that the categories used in the previous edition were to be used in this edition as well. They also noted that the number of judges increased. Nominees were announced on January 15, the first day of voting. It ran until January 22. There were 15 million votes cast, with a majority coming from the United States, Mexico, and Brazil. The awards ceremony was streamed live on February 19 as a digital event. It was virtually hosted by Tim Lyu with Crunchyroll-Hime, the official mascot of Crunchyroll. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Crunchyroll noted that the show "will look different."

Koyoharu Gotouge is a Japanese manga artist, known for the manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (2016–2020). By February 2021, the manga had over 150 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a Japanese anime television series based on Koyoharu Gotouge's manga series of the same name. The second season adapts from the 7th volume to the 11th volume of the manga and ran for two continuous cours. The first part, titled Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Mugen Train Arc, is a seven-episode recompilation of the "Mugen Train" arc as featured in the 2020 anime film. It contains new music and an all new anime original episode which takes place immediately before the main story. The first part aired from October 10 to November 28, 2021. The second part, titled Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Entertainment District Arc, aired eleven episodes from December 5, 2021, to February 13, 2022. The season was directed by Haruo Sotozaki, with character designs by Akira Matsushima, and animation produced by Ufotable; staff and cast from the first season and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train also returned.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. The manga, which was originally titled Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, was serialized in Shueisha's magazine Jump Giga from April to July 2017. After Akutami launched Jujutsu Kaisen in 2018, the series was retitled Jujutsu Kaisen 0—making it a prologue—and released in a single tankōbon volume in December 2018. It was licensed for English release in North America by Viz Media. The series follows Yuta Okkotsu, a young student who becomes a sorcerer and seeks to control the Cursed Spirit of his childhood friend Rika Orimoto.

Hiroshi Seko is a Japanese anime screenwriter. After serving as an episode screenwriter, he was given the role of head screenwriter for Seraph of the End. Since then, he has done screenwriting for many other series, such as critically acclaimed titles Attack on Titan, Mob Psycho 100, Vinland Saga,Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man. He frequently collaborates with Wit Studio and MAPPA.

Haruo Sotozaki is a Japanese anime and film director. He made his full directorial debut in 2004 with the anime adaptation of Ninja Nonsense. In 2019, he directed the anime adaptation of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, as well as its film, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train in 2020, which has earned numerous awards.

Satoru Gojo is a fictional character from Gege Akutami's manga Jujutsu Kaisen. He was first introduced in Akutami's short series Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School as the mentor of the cursed teenager Yuta Okkotsu at Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School. This miniseries became the prequel Jujutsu Kaisen 0 of Jujutsu Kaisen. In Jujutsu Kaisen, Gojo takes the same role but mentors the student Yuji Itadori who suffers a similar Curse, helping him become stronger while protecting other characters in the series.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a 2021 Japanese animated dark fantasy film. It is based on the 2017 manga Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which is itself a prequel to the manga series Jujutsu Kaisen, both mangas having been written by Gege Akutami. It was directed by Sunghoo Park from a screenplay by Hiroshi Seko, and stars Megumi Ogata, Kana Hanazawa, Mikako Komatsu, Kōki Uchiyama, Tomokazu Seki, Yuichi Nakamura, and Takahiro Sakurai. The film follows Yuta Okkotsu, a young student who becomes a sorcerer and seeks to control the Cursed Spirit of his childhood friend Rika Orimoto in Jujutsu High, alongside other skilled sorcerers in training.

Yuta Okkotsu is the protagonist of Gege Akutami's manga Jujutsu Kaisen 0. He is a teenager who is surrounded and helped by the Cursed Spirit of Rika Orimoto, his childhood friend who died six years before the story and is cursed because both of them promised to get married when they grow up. In November 2016, Yuta met Satoru Gojo, a Jujutsu Sorcerer under whose guidance he joined Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School to control Rika's Curse. Yuta also appears in the sequel Jujutsu Kaisen as an experienced warrior.

The 6th Crunchyroll Anime Awards was held on February 9, 2022, honoring excellence in anime from 2021. Crunchyroll opened the public nominations for judges on October 14, 2021, running until October 20. On December 16, Crunchyroll revealed the list of judges. Nominees was announced on January 18. Voting ended on January 25. Winners was announced on February 9.

The 7th Crunchyroll Anime Awards was held on March 4, 2023, at the Main Banquet Hall of the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa in Tokyo, Japan. It was the first ceremony to be held in person since 2020; both ceremonies in 2021 and 2022 were held virtually. Additionally, it was the first ceremony to be held in Japan, as previous physical ceremonies were held in the United States. Anime released on television or online in Japan from November 2021 to September 2022 were eligible for nominations for this edition. The ceremony was hosted by voice actress Sally Amaki and presenter Jon Kabira, with Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida opening the show. Previous winners ALI and AKLO, Yuki Kajiura, and Kohta Yamamoto performed at the ceremony, while singer Haruka Kaki of Nogizaka46, comedian Kendo Kobayashi, entertainer Roland, and actress Sawa Suzuki presented the awards to the winners together with various voice actors and entertainers. Sony Music Solutions collaborated with Crunchyroll in planning and operations, with Telescope Inc. administering the voting process. Crunchyroll streamed the ceremony live on YouTube and Twitch, as well as on SonyLIV in India. Voting for the Anime of the Year category included "social voting" for the first time, which allowed Twitter users to vote for the category by posting the necessary hashtags or by retweeting. The list of nominees were announced on the first day of voting, January 19. Voting closed on January 25.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a Japanese anime television series produced by Ufotable, based on the manga series of the same name by Koyoharu Gotouge. The series follows teenage Tanjiro Kamado, who strives to become a Demon Slayer after his family was slaughtered and his younger sister, Nezuko, is turned into a demon.

The Crunchyroll Anime Award for Anime of the Year is the highest award given at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards since its inaugural edition in 2017. It is given for the best anime series from the previous year. Winners are determined through a combined voting process by judges and public voting.
