The 4th Crunchyroll Anime Awards were held on February 15, 2020, honoring excellence in anime from 2019. Crunchyroll announced the categories and the list of judges for the 2020 awards on December 17, while also noting that the list was still not complete. [1] They also noted that they've increased their judges by over 50%, with more than half of them coming from outside the United States. [1] Nominees were announced on the first day of voting, January 10. [1] Voting ran until January 17, [2] with the results announced on February 15. [3] The show was hosted by WWE wrestler Xavier Woods and Tim Lyu. [4] [5] Several personalities in the anime community were invited to present the awards. [4]

There were 18 categories. Best Couple was reinstated after being absent in the last two editions. [6] Best Score, Best Drama, and Best Comedy were also reinstated after being absent in the last year's edition. [6] [7] Best Film and Best Continuing Series were dropped. [7] A new category, Best Fantasy, was introduced. [7] [8] Carole & Tuesday , Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba , and Vinland Saga each received nine nominations, including the Anime of the Year. Mamoru Miyano was nominated for the second straight time in the Best VA Performance (JP) award. Japanese singer Aimer received her third nomination, the second consecutive, in the Best Ending Sequence category. Australian composer Kevin Penkin received his second nomination for Best Score. Carole & Tuesday's opening and ending themes, both sung by Nai Br.XX and Celeina Ann, were nominated in their respective categories. [7]

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba won the Anime of the Year award. [5] Its main protagonist, Tanjiro Kamado, won Best Boy. [5] He also was nominated in the Best Protagonist category, only to lost to Senku Ishigami of Dr. Stone . Demon Slayer is tied with Kaguya-sama: Love Is War in receiving the most wins. [5] Kaguya-sama also won Best Comedy and Best Ending Sequence. [5] [9] Vinland Saga won Best Drama, while The Promised Neverland won the inaugural Best Fantasy award. [5] Mob Psycho 100 's second season won in the Best Animation category. [5] [9] Canadian composer Mocky won the Best Score award for his work on Carole & Tuesday. It was serialized in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump from February 2016 to May 2020, with its chapters collected in 23 tankōbon volumes. It has been published in English by Viz Media and simultaneously on the Manga Plus platform by Shueisha. It follows teenage Tanjiro Kamado, who joins the Demon Slayer Corps after his family is slaughtered and the sole survivor, his younger sister Nezuko, is turned into a demon, in the hopes of turning her human again and defeating the demon king Muzan Kibutsuji.

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War is a Japanese romantic comedy anime television series based on the manga series of the same name by Aka Akasaka, that premiered on 12 January 2019. It has aired on MBS, Tokyo MX, BS11, GTV, GYT, CTV, and TeNY.

Tanjiro Kamado is a fictional character and the protagonist of Koyoharu Gotouge's manga Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Tanjiro goes on a quest to restore the humanity of his sister, Nezuko, who was turned into a demon after his family was killed by Muzan Kibutsuji following an attack that resulted in the death of his other relatives. After an encounter with Giyu Tomioka, a demon slayer, Tanjiro is recruited by Giyu to also become a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and avenge his family. Besides Ufotable's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba anime adaptation, Tanjiro has also appeared in a light novel that acts as a prequel to the manga.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, also known simply as Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, is a 2020 Japanese animated dark fantasy action film based on the "Mugen Train" arc of the 2016–20 manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba by Koyoharu Gotouge. It is a direct sequel to the first season of the anime television series as well as its first film adaptation. The film was directed by Haruo Sotozaki and written by Ufotable staff members.

The 5th Crunchyroll Anime Awards were held on February 19, 2021, honoring excellence in anime from 2020. Crunchyroll announced the list of categories as well as the judges on December 16, 2020. They noted that the categories used in the previous edition were to be used in this edition as well. They also noted that the number of judges increased. Nominees were announced on January 15, the first day of voting. It ran until January 22. There were 15 million votes cast, with a majority coming from the United States, Mexico, and Brazil. The awards ceremony was streamed live on February 19 as a digital event. It was virtually hosted by Tim Lyu with Crunchyroll-Hime, the official mascot of Crunchyroll. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Crunchyroll noted that the show "will look different."

Koyoharu Gotouge is a Japanese manga artist, known for the manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (2016–2020). By February 2021, the manga had over 150 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time.

Brianna Knickerbocker is an American voice actress who has provided numerous voices for English dubbed Japanese anime and video games. Some of her roles include Kanao Tsuyuri from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Tuesday from Carole & Tuesday, Hu Tao from Genshin Impact, Chisaki Hiradaira from Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea, Tita Russell from The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV, Sakura from Fire Emblem Fates, and Rem from Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World. She is also a singer and songwriter known as Starless.

Hiroshi Seko is a Japanese anime screenwriter. After serving as an episode screenwriter, he was given the role of head screenwriter for Seraph of the End. Since then, he has done screenwriting for many other series, such as critically acclaimed titles Attack on Titan, Mob Psycho 100, Vinland Saga,Jujutsu Kaisen, and Chainsaw Man. He frequently collaborates with Wit Studio and MAPPA.

Haruo Sotozaki is a Japanese anime and film director. He made his full directorial debut in 2004 with the anime adaptation of Ninja Nonsense. In 2019, he directed the anime adaptation of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, as well as its film, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train in 2020, which has earned numerous awards.

The 6th Crunchyroll Anime Awards was held on February 9, 2022, honoring excellence in anime from 2021. Crunchyroll opened the public nominations for judges on October 14, 2021, running until October 20. On December 16, Crunchyroll revealed the list of judges. Nominees was announced on January 18. Voting ended on January 25. Winners was announced on February 9.

The 7th Crunchyroll Anime Awards was held on March 4, 2023, at the Main Banquet Hall of the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa in Tokyo, Japan. It was the first ceremony to be held in person since 2020; both ceremonies in 2021 and 2022 were held virtually. Additionally, it was the first ceremony to be held in Japan, as previous physical ceremonies were held in the United States. Anime released on television or online in Japan from November 2021 to September 2022 were eligible for nominations for this edition. The ceremony was hosted by voice actress Sally Amaki and presenter Jon Kabira, with Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida opening the show. Previous winners ALI and AKLO, Yuki Kajiura, and Kohta Yamamoto performed at the ceremony, while singer Haruka Kaki of Nogizaka46, comedian Kendo Kobayashi, entertainer Roland, and actress Sawa Suzuki presented the awards to the winners together with various voice actors and entertainers. Sony Music Solutions collaborated with Crunchyroll in planning and operations, with Telescope Inc. administering the voting process. Crunchyroll streamed the ceremony live on YouTube and Twitch, as well as on SonyLIV in India. Voting for the Anime of the Year category included "social voting" for the first time, which allowed Twitter users to vote for the category by posting the necessary hashtags or by retweeting. The list of nominees were announced on the first day of voting, January 19. Voting closed on January 25.

Categories and the list of judges were revealed on December 5. Nominees were revealed on the first day of public voting, January 17. Voting closed on January 27. Presenters for the ceremony on March 2 was announced on January 17, and included American rapper Megan Thee Stallion, Canadian actress Iman Vellani, and Japanese singer LiSA, with Sony Group Corporation CEO Kenichiro Yoshida giving opening remarks.

The Crunchyroll Anime Award for Anime of the Year is the highest award given at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards since its inaugural edition in 2017. It is given for the best anime series from the previous year. Winners are determined through a combined voting process by judges and public voting.
