Cryptozoic Entertainment is an American publisher of board and card games, trading cards and collectibles based on both licensed and original intellectual properties. The company is well known for its "Cerberus Engine Game", the catch name for its series of deck-building games. Cryptozoic's first game was based on DC Comics characters, having been released in 2012. The Cerberus engine is utilized in various games; all Cerberus games are compatible with each other, allowing gamers to intermix different decks and characters from different universes.

Cryptozoic Entertainment has also produced products based on The Lord of the Rings , Attack on Titan , Ghostbusters , AMC's The Walking Dead , Portal , Rick and Morty , various Cartoon Network series such as Adventure Time , DC Comics characters and other IPs. [2]

History

Founded in March 2010, Cryptozoic's first product was the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game expansion Wrathgate, released in May 2010. Cryptozoic produced 12 sets for the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game. The last set, Timewalkers: Reign of Fire, was released in July 2013. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]

Cryptozoic Entertainment expanded its product line-up with numerous tabletop games beginning in 2011. The DC Comics Deck-Building Game franchise represents its best-selling series of products to date, with 12 standalone base games and 14 expansions, as well as numerous promo cards. Other popular titles include Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards: Duel at Mt. Skullzfyre, Ghostbusters: The Board Game, Spyfall, and Portal: The Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game. [9]

Trading cards were also added to Cryptozoic Entertainment's catalog in 2011 with the launch of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Liberty Trading Card Set. [10] Since then, Cryptozoic has released over 50 different trading card sets featuring properties such as DC Comics, The Flash, Gotham, The Hobbit, The Big Bang Theory, Ghostbusters, Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey and Outlander. These trading card sets have signatures from well-known actors, including Harrison Ford, Norman Reedus, Evangeline Lilly, Dan Aykroyd, Leonard Nimoy, and Tatiana Maslany. [11]

In 2016, a third product category was added to Cryptozoic Entertainment's slate of offerings: collectibles. Products featuring Ghostbusters, DC Comics, and Cartoon Books characters were first made available at San Diego Comic-Con 2016. [12] The company's collectibles include DC Comics Lil’ Bombshells, Ghostbusters Micro Figures, the Fone Bone Vinyl Figure, Mighty Meeples, and many others. [13]

The Batman Adventures: Mad Love is a one-shot comic book written by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. It was later adapted as an episode of the animated series The New Batman Adventures, and incorporated in the video games Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham Origins. <i>World of Warcraft Trading Card Game</i> Collectible card game

The World of Warcraft Trading Card Game is an out-of-print collectible card game based on Blizzard Entertainment's MMORPG, World of Warcraft. The game was announced by Upper Deck Entertainment on August 18, 2005 and released on October 25, 2006. Players can play against each other one-on-one, or can join others in order to defeat dungeon/raid "bosses" based on those in the MMORPG. In March 2010, Upper Deck lost the license from Blizzard Entertainment. The license was acquired by Cryptozoic Entertainment later in the month, with the company announcing that planned card sets would be released.

Lego Batman is a discontinued theme and product range of the Lego building toy, introduced in 2006, based on the superhero character Batman, under license from DC Comics. The sets feature vehicles, characters and scenes from the comics and films. The inspirations for the design of these vary widely. For example, the Batmobile retains its basic sleek shape and prominent fins from the Tim Burton films, whereas the "Bat-Tank" seems to be based on the tank-like Batmobile in Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. The theme was relaunched in early 2012 as part of the Lego DC Universe Superheroes line, which is a sub-theme of the Lego Super Heroes line. In total there were 17 sets, almost all of them including Batman.

Hearthstone is a free-to-play online digital collectible card game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Originally subtitled Heroes of Warcraft, Hearthstone builds upon the existing lore of the Warcraft series by using the same elements, characters, and relics. It was first released for Windows and macOS in March 2014, with ports for iOS and Android released later that year. HEX: Shards of Fate was a massively multiplayer online trading card game (MMOTCG) by Cryptozoic Entertainment. It is the first game in the MMOTCG genre. It was funded via Kickstarter, and raised US$2,278,255 while its campaign was active. As of October 28, 2013, Hex was the 11th most-funded video game on Kickstarter. The game was officially released on January 26, 2016, and was playable on Windows, OS X and iOS.

A deck-building game is a card game or board game where construction of a deck of cards is a main element of gameplay. Deck-building games are similar to collectible card games (CCGs) in that each player has their own deck. However, unlike CCGs, the cards are not sold in randomized packs, and the majority of the deck is built during the game, instead of before the game.

A sideboard, side deck, or side is a set of cards in a collectible card game that are separate from a player's primary deck. It is used to customize a match strategy against an opponent by enabling a player to change the composition of the playing deck.

DC Comics Bombshells refers to a line of figurines released by DC Collectibles depicting DC Comics superheroines in a retro 1940s look based on designs by Ant Lucia. The line has further expanded to encompass variant covers of DC Comics and licensed memorabilia such as art prints, T-shirts, mugs and their own ongoing comic book.

Rick and Morty is an American animated science-fiction comedy franchise, whose eponymous duo consists of Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith. Rick and Morty were created by cartoonist Justin Roiland for a 2006 parody film of Back to the Future for Channel 101, a short film festival co-founded by Dan Harmon. After six years, the sketch was developed into Rick and Morty, a half-hour prime time show that was a hit for Adult Swim, receiving universal acclaim across all seasons. Alongside the original television series, the characters of the show have been featured in a variety of media, including spin-offs, comic books, musical releases and video games. The show has earned hundreds of millions of dollars in income across their merchandising and media franchise.
