Cyphogastra foveicollis is a Jewel Beetle of the Buprestidae family. [1]
Buprestidae is a family of beetles known as jewel beetles or metallic wood-boring beetles because of their glossy iridescent colors. Larvae of this family are known as flatheaded borers. The family is among the largest of the beetles, with some 15,500 species known in 775 genera. In addition, almost 100 fossil species have been described.
Family is one of the eight major hierarchical taxonomic ranks in Linnaean taxonomy; it is classified between order and genus. A family may be divided into subfamilies, which are intermediate ranks between the ranks of family and genus. The official family names are Latin in origin; however, popular names are often used: for example, walnut trees and hickory trees belong to the family Juglandaceae, but that family is commonly referred to as being the "walnut family".
Cyphogastra foveicollis reaches about 30 millimetres (1.2 in) in length. The basic colour of the elytra and thorax may be metallic dark green or dark purplish.
This species occurs in West Papua. [2]
