From 1999 to 2002, Steele served as the head football coach at Baylor University, compiling a record of 9–36 overall and 1–31 in the Big 12 Conference.

He also coached for USC, Miami (FL), Arizona, and the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for Delaware and Pittsburgh as a tight end. He is the son of former New York Jets, New England Patriots, USC, and Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll and the brother of Carolina Panthers passing game coordinator Nate Carroll.

Prior to joining Auburn, Taylor served as co-offensive coordinator for Oklahoma State. He has spent over a decade coaching wide receivers, primarily in the Southeastern and Big 12 conferences.

His NFL coaching career began as an assistant with the Miami Dolphins in 2012, coaching quarterbacks, tight ends, and wide receivers. Johnson later joined the Lions in 2019, rising to offensive coordinator in 2022 and leading the team to two top-five offenses. He was previously a walk-on quarterback at North Carolina in the mid-2000s.
