The Dalgado Konknni Akademi is an organisation located in Panjim, Goa that works for the development and promotion of Konkani in the Roman script.
The academy was established in 1988 and named after Sebastião Rodolfo Dalgado. [1] During the period 1988-1992, the DKA was very active. Freddy J. da Costa was the President, Tomazinho Cardozo was the secretary and Prabhakar Tendulkar the treasurer. During this period, DKA published Konkani Orthography in Roman Script, a publication intended for writers to understand the principles and rules of writing Konkani in Roman script.
Tomazinho Cardozo was the second president and Jose Salvador Fernandes and Prabhakar Tendulkar were the secretary and treasurer respectively. Premanand A. Lotlikar was the President of Dalgado Konknni Akademi for three consecutive terms of 3 years each (2008 to 2017) while Vincy Quadros has been the secretary from the year 2014. There have been calls for the government of Goa to stop discriminating against Romi Konkani and officially recognise the DKA. [2]
The organisation aims to promote the study and development of the Konkani language in Roman script; recognize schools that promote the Konkani language; and hold cultural activities for the Konkani language, its literature, and the culture of its writers and speakers.

These awards are instituted to give recognition for the work done by the writers and others in the field of Romi Konkani literature, cultural activists, heritage activist, young talent, best Romi Konkani institution and journalism.
The Akademi has also initiated the Konknni (Romi Lipi) Sahitya ani Sonvskrutik Sammelan (Konkani Literary and Cultural Conference) which has been held since the year 2008. Vincy Quadros was the President of First Sommelan. Akademi also organises Writers Conference every year for the benefit of Romi Konkani Writers. [3]
Apart from this, the academy holds literary competitions on short story, poetry, essays, once act plays and novels. [4] and organises poets' meets. [5] The DKA also publishes a large number of Konkani books. [6] [7] The academy also organises contests such as novel writing and story reading in order to increase the readership and simultaneously to inculcate the habit of reading Konknni in Roman Script. The year 2015 made a way for State level Konkani Reading Competition. Those secured first three places are selected for Final Round at Akademi's Panjim office. Cash prizes and certificates are awarded at all levels. [8] [9] The DKA has ties with the Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr [10] and coordinates several activities with it.
The Akademi is located in the old Education Department Building's second floor, near the Goa Pharmacy College on the second floor of the building based in the Goa state capital of Panjim or Panaji.
Konkani is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by the Konkani people, primarily in the Konkan region, along the western coast of India. It is one of the 22 scheduled languages mentioned in the Indian Constitution, and the official language of the Indian state of Goa. It is also spoken in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala, Gujarat as well as Damaon, Diu & Silvassa.
Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK) is a Jesuit research-institute working on issues related to the Konkani language, literature, culture and education. It is based in Alto Porvorim, on the outskirts of the state capital of Goa, India.

Msgr Sebastião Rodolfo Dalgado was a Catholic priest, academic, university professor, theologian, orientalist, and linguist from Portuguese Goa.
John Baptist Moraes was a Konkani poet and writer. He was based in Bombay (Mumbai), which he migrated to in 1951 and wrote in Konkani in the Kannada script. He was also the founder and co-editor of the Konkani Daiz monthly, he was on the editorial board of the Poinnari weekly, and in 2002 was appointed member of the General Council of the Sahitya Akademi, India's academy of letters.
Konkani in the Roman script, commonly known as Roman Konkani or Romi Konknni refers to the writing of the Konkani language in the Roman script. While Konkani is written in five different scripts altogether, Roman Konkani is widely used. Roman Konkani is known to be the oldest preserved and protected literary tradition beginning from the 16th century AD.
João Francisco Silva, known professionally as John D' Silva, is an Indian actor, comedian, playwright, and director known for his work in Konkani films and tiatr productions. He is the first tiatrist to enter the Limca Book of Records in 2010 for acting, writing, directing and producing 25 tiatrs having a double alphabet in their titles.
Jayanti Naik is an Indian Konkani writer, folklore researcher, short story writer, dramatist, children's writer, folklorist, and translator. She was the first person to earn a doctorate from the Goa University's Department of Konkani. She is also a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award. In her career of some three decades, she has produced on average, a book a year.
Tomazinho Cardozo, is an Indian politician, playwright, writer, and teacher who served as a Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly from January 1995 to June 1999. He is known for his achievements on the literary front and the popular tiatr stage in the state of Goa.
Vasco do Rego was an Indian Jesuit priest who played a significant role in the promotion of Konkani language, literature and music, particularly after the Annexation of Goa. He was the editor of the religious monthly Dor Mhoineachi Rotti for many years.
Reginaldo "Reginald" Fernandes was an Indian writer, musician and cultural figure from the world of Goan and Konkani music. He was known for having written a vast number of Konkani romans novels, over a hundred in number. He has been called the "King of Konkani Fiction".
Mario Piedade Menezes, popularly known by his sobriquet Tragedy King, was an Indian theatre director, playwright, and actor who primarily worked on the Konkani stage. He was the vice president of the Tiatr Academy Goa.
Nevel Lourdes Sacramento Gracias was an Indian Catholic priest, playwright, actor, singer, composer, director, and literary editor who primarily worked on the Konkani stage, best known for his lenten tiatrs. He was regarded as a one-man show and served in the general council of the Tiatr Academy of Goa.
John Claro Fernandes, known professionally as John Claro, is an Indian writer, theatre director, playwright, and actor. Throughout his extensive career, he has made crucial contributions to the development and advancement of Goan tiatr. His noted research on the history of tiatr led to the discovery that the inaugural tiatr production, titled Italian Bhurgo, took place on 17 April 1892, at the New Alfred Theatre in Bombay, presently occupied by the Police Commissioner headquarters.
Santana Filomena Ceirico Camilo "Cyriaco" Dias is an Indian actor, playwright, theatre director, singer, freedom fighter, and social worker known for his work in Konkani films and tiatr productions. Throughout his career, he has performed in over 1,000 dramas and has accumulated over 4,500 acting credits.
Carmen Rose Lobo, known professionally as Carmen Rose, is an Indian former singer, and theatre actress known for her work in tiatr productions from 1963 to 1978.
Antonio Lourenço Jerry Braganza, known professionally as Al Jerry Braganza, was an Indian filmmaker, actor, and singer known for his work in Konkani films. Referred to as the "Father of Konkani cinema," Braganza directed and produced the first Konkani film, Mogacho Aunddo (1950), following the unreleased film Sukhi Konn (1949), an unsuccessful attempt by playwright G. M. B. Rodrigues.
Pio Antonio Jose Caetano Judas Esteves is an Indian writer, journalist, cartoonist, poet, playwright, and theatre director. As a journalist, he works for the local daily English newspaper O Heraldo. In the Konkani theatre scene, he is known for his work in children's tiatr productions.
