He is particularly interested in questions to do with the origins and historical reliability of the gospels. He is involved in helping people to understand the first century context of Jesus and the early church, and to get students to be intelligently and responsibly excited about the New Testament (and equipped to teach it to others). He has written many publications including "The Parables of Jesus" (IVP),a guide to the teaching of Jesus and his most recent book "Paul and Jesus:the true story" (SPCK/Eerdmans) an introduction to Paul, looking at questions of history and theology in the book of Acts,Paul's letters and the gospels.

He was ordained in the Church of England as a deacon in 1984 and as a priest in 1985. From 1996 to 2002,he was a non-stipendiary minister (NSM) in the Benefice of Shelswell in the Diocese of Oxford. From 2003 to 2007,he was an NSM at St Michael's Church,Cumnor. between 2007 and 2013,he concentrated on his academic career and did not hold any dedicated ministry positions. He returned to St Michael's Church,Cumnor in 2013,and serves as a NSM in his semi-retirement. [1]

The Gospel of Matthew is the first book of the New Testament of the Bible and one of the three synoptic Gospels. It tells how Israel's Messiah,Jesus, comes to his people but is rejected by them and how, after his resurrection,he sends the disciples to the gentiles instead. Matthew wishes to emphasize that the Jewish tradition should not be lost in a church that was increasingly becoming gentile. The gospel reflects the struggles and conflicts between the evangelist's community and the other Jews, particularly with its sharp criticism of the scribes and Pharisees with the position that through their rejection of Christ, the Kingdom of God has been taken away from them and given instead to the church.
In Christianity,Jesus is believed to be the Son of God or God in human form as written in the Bible's New Testament, and in most Christian denominations he is held to be God the Son,a Person of the Trinity of God.
