Anjali Singh was a 20-year-old [1] Indian woman who was killed in a road traffic collision in Delhi on January 1, 2023. It is also known as the 2023 Delhi hit-and-run case, or the Kanjhawala case. [2] [3] [4] Anjali was driving a scooter that was hit by a motorist, her leg got stuck in the car's axle and she was dragged by the car for several kilometres, [5] [6] eventually resulted in her death. [7] [8] The incident generated widespread national and international coverage and was widely condemned, both in India and abroad. [9] [10] Subsequently, public protests against the central government for failing to provide adequate security for women took place in Delhi. [11] [12]

Anjali Singh

Singh was born to mother Rekha as the second of six siblings who lived in the Mangolpuri area of Delhi. [1] Her father died eight years before her death in 2023. [1] [13] Singh's mother worked as an assistant in a school but lost her job during the COVID-19 pandemic. [1] Singh did not complete school in order to financially support her family and worked as a make-up artist. [1] She was very active on social media and Instagram Reels. [14] [15] Anjali used to work as an usher for an event management company at weddings for daily remuneration. [16] [17]

Death

Anjali left Vivan Palace OYO hotel at around 1:30 am on the morning of January 1, 2023, along with her friend Nidhi after attending a New Year's party. [1] [18] [19] [20] Anjali was wearing a pink T-shirt and Nidhi a red one. The five accused had first gone to Haryana's Murthal for a dhaba food to mark the New Year 2023. [21] [22] When travelling on her scooter in the Sultanpuri [23] area of Delhi, she was struck by a grey Suzuki Baleno car. [24] The car's five occupants panicked and did not stop, dragging the body of Singh [1] for several kilometres. [5] The car's occupants, who admitted being intoxicated with alcohol, [25] were subsequently arrested. [1] Her friend, Nidhi, was the scooter's pillion rider, but she escaped unharmed. [5]

The naked body of Anjali was found near Hanuman Mandir at Jonti village in Sultanpuri. [26] [27] Her body was sent to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Mangolpuri, Delhi. [28] An autopsy recorded the cause of Singh's death as "shock and haemorrhage due to injury to the head, spine, left femur and both lower limbs" [1] and noted 40 injuries on her body. [29]

Investigation

A medical board of doctors at the Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) conducted Anjali's autopsy and reported that there were a total of 40 injuries. [30] The autopsy report mentioned Brain Matter Missing, Skull Open and Spine Broken. [31] Her autopsy has ruled out the possibility of a sex assault. [32] Delhi Police arrested the five accused within 3 hours of the body being found, with the help of two Automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) cameras that captured the Baleno with the registration DL8CAY6414. [33] The five accused men arrested are Amit Khanna (25), Krishan (27), Mithun (26), Manoj Mittal (27) and Deepak Khanna (26). [21] They were intoxicated at the time of the incident. Of the five, Manoj Mittal is affiliated to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is co-convener of the Mongolpuri ward. [34] Amit works with SBI Cards in Uttam Nagar, Krishan works at the Spanish Culture Centre in Connaught Place, Mithun is a hairdresser at Naraina, Manoj Mittal is a ration dealer in Sultanpuri while Deepak is a Gramin Sewa auto driver. CCTV footage has emerged, which shows the girl being dragged under a Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The video is from January 1, 2023, at 2:13 am shortly after the accident. According to an eye-witness, Deepak Dahiya, who runs a confectionery shop at the Kanjhawala Road in Ladpur village, the car took a U-turn after hitting the scooty. [36] [37] Deepak chased the car with his motorcycle and was in contact with the police. [38] Anjali's friend Nidhi gave statement that the accused kept on driving the car deliberately while Anjali was screaming. [39] Nidhi also said that Anjali was drunk on that day and Anjali insisted on driving the scooty. [40]

On 5 January 2023, Delhi Police named two more accused - Ashutosh and Ankush Khanna. [41] [42] [43] Ashutosh is the brother-in-law of the vehicle owner Lokesh, while Ankush is the brother of one of the accused. [44] [45] [46] Ankush was later granted bail on furnishing a personal bond of ₹ 20,000 along with one surety. [47] None of the four men in the car had driving license. [48] Delhi police added section 201 of the Indian Penal Code to the FIR for ‘destruction of evidence’. It was Amit Khanna who was allegedly driving the car while Deepak Khanna (a cousin of Ankush and Amit Khanna) was at his house at the time of the accident. [49] [50] Nidhi was caught by Government Railway Police (GRP), Agra, in 2020 in a drug case under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, [51] in which she later got bail. [52] Delhi Police has also found traffic challans worth ₹ 19000 pending against Nidhi. [52] Another CCTV footage showed Anjali in another accident on 16 July 2022. [53] That time Anjali was found to have consumed alcohol.

Ministry of Home Affairs asked the Delhi Police to invoke Section 302 of the IPC against the accused persons. [54] On 1 April 2023, Delhi Police filed an 800-page chargesheet in Kanjhawala Case, in which four out of the seven accused - Amit Khanna, Krishan, Mithun and Manoj Mittal - in the Kanjhawala hit-and-drag case were charged with murder. Aftermath

Singh's family have made claims that she was the subject of a sexual assault due to her body being found naked. [1] Police have rejected this allegation stating that the post-mortem examination did not support the allegation. [1]

On 3 January 2023, a delegation of 12 Aam Aadmi Party legislators, led by Greater Kailash MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj along with Kalkaji MLA Atishi, met Delhi Police commissioner Sanjay Arora and submitted a memorandum with five demands. [57] The demands included the removal of deputy commissioner of police (outer) Harendra K Singh. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the victim's family. [58] Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi said the current police response system in Delhi has collapsed and called for a need for the revival of the earlier police response system through police control room vans. [59] Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal cautioned against “victim-shaming” of Anjali and said that her friend's account should be verified. [11] Shah Rukh Khan‘s Meer Foundation has extended financial aid to Anjali’s family. [60]

On Ministry of Home Affairs's recommendations, 11 Delhi policemen were suspended. [61] [62]

Nitish Katara was a 23-year-old Indian business executive in Delhi who was murdered in the early hours of 17 February 2002 by Vikas Yadav. Yadav was the son of influential politician D. P. Yadav. Katara had recently graduated from the Institute of Management Technology in Ghaziabad where he had fallen in love with his classmate Bharti Yadav, sister of Vikas Yadav. The trial court held that Katara's murder was an honour killing because the family did not approve of their relationship. Vikas and Vishal Yadav were later found guilty by the trial Court and both were given life sentences on 30 May 2008.

Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. According to the 2021 annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 31,677 rape cases were registered across the country, or an average of 86 cases daily, a rise from 2020 with 28,046 cases, while in 2019, 32,033 cases were registered. Of the total 31,677 rape cases, 28,147 of the rapes were committed by persons known to the victim. The share of victims who were minors or below 18 – the legal age of consent – stood at 10%.

The 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder, commonly known as the Nirbhaya case, involved a rape and fatal assault that occurred on 16 December 2012 in Munirka, a neighbourhood in South Delhi. The incident took place when Jyoti Singh, a 22-year-old physiotherapy intern, was beaten, gang-raped, and tortured in a private bus in which she was travelling with her male friend, Avnindra Pratap Pandey. There were six others in the bus, including the driver, all of whom raped the woman and beat her friend. She was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi for treatment and transferred to Singapore eleven days after the assault, where she succumbed to her injuries two days later. The incident generated widespread national and international coverage and was widely condemned, both in India and abroad. Subsequently, public protests against the state and central governments for failing to provide adequate security for women took place in New Delhi, where thousands of protesters clashed with security forces. Similar protests took place in major cities throughout the country. Since Indian law does not allow the press to publish a rape victim's name, the victim was widely known as Nirbhaya, meaning "fearless", and her struggle and death became a symbol of women's resistance to rape around the world.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Shakti Mills gang rape</span> August 2013 gang rape in Mumbai, India

The 2013 Mumbai gang rape, also known as the Shakti Mills gang rape, refers to the incident in which a 22-year-old photojournalist, who was interning with an English-language magazine in Mumbai, was gang-raped by five people including a juvenile. The incident occurred on 22 August 2013, when she had gone to the deserted Shakti Mills compound, near Mahalaxmi in South Mumbai, with a male colleague on an assignment. The accused had tied up the victim's colleague with belts and raped her. The accused took photos of the victim during the sexual assault, and threatened to release them to social networks if she reported the rape. Later, an eighteen-year-old call centre employee reported that she too had been gang-raped, on 31 July 2013 inside the mills complex.

India's Daughter is a documentary film directed by Leslee Udwin and is part of the BBC's ongoing Storyville series. The film is based on the 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder of 22-year-old "Nirbhaya", who was a physiotherapy student. The documentary explores the events of the night of 16 December 2012, the protests which were sparked both nationally and internationally as a result of the assault, and the lives of the men before they committed the attack. The film is told through the use of reconstructed footage and interviews with those involved in the case, including the defence lawyers, psychiatrists, and one of the rapists.

Sheena Bora, an executive working for Mumbai Metro One based in Mumbai, went missing on 24 April 2012. In August 2015, Mumbai Police arrested her mother, Indrani Mukerjea, and her mother’s driver, Shyamvar Pinturam Rai, for allegedly abducting and killing her and subsequently burning her corpse. In November 2015, her step father, Peter Mukerjea, was also arrested for his alleged part in the planning. Rai and Indrani's ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna confessed to the crime, while Indrani Mukerjea claimed that Sheena Bora is living in the United States. She later admitted to the murder in a statement to police that is inadmissible in court, before going on to claim Sheena is alive and living in Kashmir.

<i>Zindagi Ki Mehek</i> Indian drama television series

Zindagi Ki Mehak is an Indian drama television series which premiered on 19 September 2016 on Zee TV. It replaced Tashan-e-Ishq in its timeslot. After completing its run, it was replaced by Guddan Tumse Na Ho Payega in its timeslot. Produced by Parin Media, it starred Samiksha Jaiswal and Karan Vohra.

It was alleged by newspapers that on the night of 22–23 February 2016, "at least 10 women were pulled out from cars, stripped and raped by the goons" in Murthal, India. The event received large attention from both media and political parties with the Congress party demanding "President's rule in Haryana", and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal demanding "strict punishment for Haryana's Murthal gangrape culprits". A victim came forward after 6 days claiming that she was dragged from her car and raped in front of her daughter and accused her own brother-in-law of being one of the rapists. Two other alleged victims were also identified. On 20 January 2017, the Punjab and Haryana High Court said that witness statements, evidence show Murthal gang rapes took place.

<i>Kundali Bhagya</i> Indian drama television series

Kundali Bhagya is an Indian Hindi-language romantic drama television series created by Ekta Kapoor's production company Balaji Telefilms. A spin-off series of Kumkum Bhagya, it premiered on 12 July 2017 on Zee TV. It initially starred Shraddha Arya, Dheeraj Dhoopar and Manit Joura as leads, with Dhoopar being replaced by Shakti Arora in 2022. Shakti Anand later replaced Arora in 2023. The Kathua rape case involved the abduction, gang rape, and murder of an 8-year-old Muslim girl, Asifa Bano, by seven Hindu males in January 2018 in the Rasana village near Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir, India. A chargesheet for the case was filed, the accused were arrested and the trial began in Kathua on 16 April 2018. The victim belonged to the nomadic Bakarwal community, and the crime was a bid to terrorise the group off Jammu. She disappeared for a week before her body was discovered by the villagers a kilometer away from the village. The incident made national news when charges were filed against eight men in April 2018. The arrests of the accused led to protests by the Panthers Party and other local groups, who sought justice for the victim. The gang rape and murder, as well as the support the accused received especially from local officials of the Bharatiya Janata party, sparked widespread outrage in India and world-wide.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2017 Unnao rape case</span> Gang rape involving a politician in Unnao

The Unnao rape case refers to the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl on 4 June 2017 in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, India. On 16 December 2019, former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted for the rape on 20 December 2019 and sentenced to life imprisonment. Further, Sengar was found guilty in the death of the girl's father in judicial custody.

Kuldeep Singh Sengar is an Indian politician and former member of Legislative Assembly belonging to the Bhartiya Janta Party from Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh who has been convicted of rape, murder, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy and criminal intimidation. He is the main defendant in the Unnao rape case and was booked under the POCSO Act. He is also accused of killing three people, including the victim's father in police custody and later her aunts by a conspired truck accident. A Delhi District and Sessions Court upheld an investigation conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that had ruled out any foul play in the Unnao rape survivor's accident in 2019.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Swati Maliwal</span> Indian social activist and politician (born 1984)

Swati Maliwal is a social activist and politician. She currently serves as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Delhi. She participated in the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement led by social activist Anna Hazare and later, served as the chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) from 2015 to 2024.

In November 2019, the gang rape and murder of a 26-year-old veterinary doctor in Shamshabad, near Hyderabad, sparked outrage across India. Her body was found in Shadnagar on 28 November 2019, the day after she was murdered. Four suspects were arrested and, according to the Cyberabad Metropolitan Police, confessed to having raped and killed the doctor.

Vikas Dubey was a notorious Indian, crime boss, history-sheeter and a gangster-turned-politician from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh particularly infamous for the Bikroo case in July 2020. He was commonly known as "Vikas Pandit", naming himself after the titular character of the 1999 film Arjun Pandit. He was also alternatively referred to as "Pandit Ji".

On 14 September 2020, a 19-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly gang-raped in Hathras district, Uttar Pradesh, India, by four upper caste men. She died two weeks later in a Delhi hospital.
