Deke Sharon (born December 12, 1967) is an American singer, arranger, composer, director, producer, author, coach, [1] pioneer, [2] [3] [4] and teacher of a cappella music, and is one of the leaders and promoters of the contemporary a cappella community. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] He has been referred to as "the father of contemporary a cappella" [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] [18] and "the godfather of a cappella". [19] [20] [21] [22] [23] [24]
Deke Sharon was born and raised in San Francisco. [25] He started singing in choir groups at age five, [26] including the San Francisco Boys Chorus. [27] [28] He attended Town School for Boys and San Francisco University High School, [29] [30] where he sang lead (second tenor) in the barbershop quartet his freshman year in "The Music Man," [31] and kept it going all four years, learning to direct and arrange a cappella. [32]
Sharon spent his college years in Boston, graduating from Tufts University with a Bachelor of Arts in childhood studies, [33] and a Bachelor of Music from the New England Conservatory of Music [34] with a focus on vocal jazz, third stream (now called "contemporary improvisation"), and music theory. [35]
In college, he directed the collegiate a cappella group the Tufts Beelzebubs, [36] [37] transforming the group's sound to reflect modern rock, [38] with intricate instrumental vocalizations [39] [40] and the integration of vocal percussion. [41] [42] The 1990–1991 Beelzebubs album Foster Street that he directed musically is credited with the creation of contemporary a cappella sound. [43] Sharon had to audition three times before he was accepted, as he was seen as "overzealous" [44] during a time when a cappella was not popular, a fact which was mentioned in the book "Pitch Perfect." [45] [46] Beca and Benji in the Pitch Perfect films are partially based on Sharon. [47] During this time, he decided to make a career of contemporary a cappella [48] [49] and popularize this new style, despite being laughed at and told it was impossible, [50] [51] "like making a career of professional Tiddlywinks." [52]
Sharon was the music director [53] [54] and arranger [55] for the film Pitch Perfect , [12] [56] [57] [58] as well as singing on several of the songs, where he was credited on screen as "Male Voice #1." [59] He returned for Pitch Perfect 2 , [60] in which he has a brief cameo as the German judge and broadcaster. [61] [62] [63] He helped involve several professional a cappella groups and singers with the film, including The Filharmonic, [64] Penn Masala, and Pentatonix. Sharon also worked with the Green Bay Packers. [65] [66] He returned to music-direct, arrange, and vocally produce for Pitch Perfect 3 . [67] He had also arranged for the film, The Social Network . [68]
In December 2009, he acted as music director, arranger, coach, and consultant behind the scenes on America's first a cappella reality show competition, titled The Sing-Off , [69] and returned in 2010 as one of the show's producers. [70] He also served as Executive Music Producer on the Dutch Sing Off, [71] Sing Off South Africa [72] and Sing-Off China, including several guest appearances as a judge and performer. [73]
Along with The House Jacks, he sang and performed the 2011 Monday Night Football theme song "Are You Ready for Some Football" with Hank Williams, Jr. [74]
He worked with Straight No Chaser on their first PBS special Live in New York. [75]
He appeared in front of the camera for the first time on Lifetime's Pitch Slapped reality show, in which he coached after school high school a cappella group Stay Tuned from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, [67] [76] focusing both on their musicality and emotional delivery. [77] The show also aired overseas in London, [78] Israel (where its name in Hebrew means "a cappella battle") [79] across Latin America, Indonesia and the Philippines (under the name Pitch Battle). [80]
As of summer 2017 he is series music director for a new competitive choir show on BBC1 called Pitch Battle , [81] as well as appearing on camera each episode providing insight and commentary. [82] [83] He was also the third judge for the season one live finale. [84]
He judged Eurovision Choir 2019. [85] In 2022 music directed "Best in Snow" for Disney+ as well as co-arranged/vocal produced the a cappella scenes in Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin. [86]
Upon graduation in 1991, he moved back to San Francisco, bringing with him a handful of other collegiate a cappella singers to form The House Jacks, [87] a pioneering a cappella group [88] known for its original music and sound, [89] often called "the original rock band without instruments", [90] in part because they were the first a cappella group with a designated vocal percussionist. [91]
The House Jacks have released seven albums (signed to Warner Brothers/Tommy Boy Records in the mid-1990s) [92] and completed several world tours. [93] He has performed with many musicians, including Ray Charles, Crosby, Stills and Nash, LL Cool J, Run DMC, The Temptations, and James Brown. [94] [95] [96] They have won "Best Pop Rock Album" from the Contemporary A Cappella Society, for "Unbroken" (2004), "Level" (2010), and "Pollen (2014). [97]
He also performs as a solo artist, with groups such as the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus [98] and at events like Singapore's "Vocal Edge" [99] and directing DCINY's annual "Total Vocal" at Carnegie Hall [100] [101] [102] as well as serving as Emcee for a cappella events, such as the annual Techapella concerts in the San Francisco Bay Area. [41] They started touring in 2016 [120] and their debut album was released on Universal Classics. [119]
In December 2017 he announced the formation of DCappella, a seven-member contemporary a cappella group launched in 2018 that will tour performing arts centers singing music from classic and contemporary Disney films. [121] He serves as the group's co-creator, music director, arranger, album producer and artistic producer [122] [123] [124] integrating modern sounds and technology. Music performed a cappella, less commonly spelled a capella in English, is music performed by a singer or a singing group without instrumental accompaniment. The term a cappella was originally intended to differentiate between Renaissance polyphony and Baroque concertato musical styles. In the 19th century, a renewed interest in Renaissance polyphony, coupled with an ignorance of the fact that vocal parts were often doubled by instrumentalists, led to the term coming to mean unaccompanied vocal music. The term is also used, rarely, as a synonym for alla breve.
Collegiate a cappella ensembles are college-affiliated singing groups, primarily in the United States, and, increasingly, the United Kingdom and Ireland, that perform entirely without musical instruments. The groups are typically composed of, operated by, and directed by students. In the context of collegiate a cappella, the term a cappella typically also refers to the music genre performed by pop-centric student singing groups. Consequently, an ensemble that sings unaccompanied classical music may not be considered an a cappella group, even though technically it is performing a cappella.
The International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA), originally the National Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, is an international competition run by Varsity Vocals, that attracts hundreds of college a cappella groups each year.
The Contemporary A Cappella Society, or CASA, is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that fosters and promotes a cappella music of all styles around the world. CASA was founded in 1991 by Deke Sharon in San Francisco just after graduation. In his Tufts University dorm room during his senior year, Sharon published a newsletter, The "C.A.N.", mailed to all known collegiate a cappella groups by merging "The List", founded in 1988 and distributed by Rex Solomon, with the database maintained by his college a cappella group the Beelzebubs. The organization boasts over 6,000 current members, and serves as a resource for media and scholarly work in the area of contemporary a cappella.
BYU Vocal Point, or simply Vocal Point, is a seven to nine-member, male a cappella group at Brigham Young University (BYU). Founded by two students, Bob Ahlander & Dave Boyce, in 1991, Vocal Point is under the direction of former member Carson Trautman.
The Tufts Beelzebubs, frequently referred to as "The Bubs", is a male a cappella group of students from Tufts University that performs a mix of pop, rock, R&B, and other types of music while spreading their motto of "Fun through Song". Founded in 1962, they have toured in Europe, Asia, South America, and North America, and they competed on NBC's The Sing-Off in December 2009, finishing in second place.
BYU Noteworthy is a seven to nine-member, female Brigham Young University (BYU) a cappella group, based in Provo, Utah, United States. They won 1st place at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) in 2007 and appeared on the first season of NBC's a cappella competition reality show The Sing-Off in 2009. Esther Yoder formed the group in 2003, aided by members of BYU's Vocal Point. Noteworthy began operating under the direction of the Performing Arts Management (PAM) at BYU in 2014. One of their most popular music videos is a cover of Amazing Grace, which won the Contemporary A Cappella Society (CARA) award for Best Religious Video and has garnered millions of views on YouTube since its release. Noteworthy has released six albums since its formation in 2003. In 2018, Noteworthy performed "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" for a Mormon Message for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The House Jacks is a professional a cappella quintet from San Francisco, founded in 1991 by Deke Sharon.
Peter James Hollens is an American singer-songwriter, producer and entrepreneur. He has been involved with a cappella music since 1999 when he and Leo da Silva founded the University of Oregon's a cappella group, On The Rocks, known as the first official collegiate a cappella group in Oregon. He regularly releases new music videos to his YouTube channel. With over 9+ million followers and over 3 million subscribers, his content has received over a billion total views since 2011.
Pitch Perfect is a 2012 American musical comedy film directed by Jason Moore and written by Kay Cannon.
