The New South Wales Department of Family and Community Services and Justice, a department of the Government of New South Wales, is responsible for the delivery of services to some of the most disadvantaged individuals, families and communities; and the administration and development of a just and equitable legal system of courts, tribunals, laws and other mechanisms that further the principles of justice in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The department provides services to children and young people, families, people who are homeless, people with a disability, their families and carers, women, and older people.

The Government of New South Wales, also referred to as the New South Wales Government or NSW Government, is the Australian state democratic administrative authority of New South Wales. It is currently held by a coalition of the Liberal Party and the National Party. The Government of New South Wales, a parliamentary constitutional monarchy, was formed in 1856 as prescribed in its Constitution, as amended from time to time. Since the Federation of Australia in 1901, New South Wales has been a state of the Commonwealth of Australia, and the Constitution of Australia regulates its relationship with the Commonwealth. Under the Australian Constitution, New South Wales ceded legislative and judicial supremacy to the Commonwealth, but retained powers in all matters not in conflict with the Commonwealth.

New South Wales State of Australia

New South Wales is a state on the east coast of Australia. It borders Queensland to the north, Victoria to the south, and South Australia to the west. Its coast borders the Tasman Sea to the east. The Australian Capital Territory is an enclave within the state. New South Wales' state capital is Sydney, which is also Australia's most populous city. In September 2018, the population of New South Wales was over 8 million, making it Australia's most populous state. Just under two-thirds of the state's population, 5.1 million, live in the Greater Sydney area. Inhabitants of New South Wales are referred to as New South Welshmen.

The department was formed on 1 July 2019 following the 2019 state election that saw the formation of the second Berejiklian ministry. The department assumed most of functions from the former Department of Family and Community Services, and the former Department of Justice. [1]

2019 New South Wales state election

The 2019 New South Wales state election was held on Saturday 23 March 2019 to elect the 57th Parliament of New South Wales, including all 93 seats in the Legislative Assembly and 21 of the 42 seats in the Legislative Council. The election was conducted by the New South Wales Electoral Commission (NSWEC).

Second Berejiklian ministry

The Second Berejiklian ministry is the 97th ministry of the Government of New South Wales, and is led by Gladys Berejiklian, the state's 45th Premier. It is the second and subsequent of two occasions that Berejiklian served as Premier.

Michael Coutts-Trotter Australian public servant

Michael Coutts-Trotter is an Australian public servant who is the current Secretary (director-general) of the New South Wales Department of Justice. He was previously the director-general of the Departments of Education and Training and Finance and Services. Coutts-Trotter was given a nine-year prison sentence after being convicted for the importation and distribution of heroin into Australia in 1986.

The Attorney General of New South Wales, in formal contexts also Attorney-General or Attorney General for New South Wales and usually known simply as the Attorney General, is a minister in the Government of New South Wales who has responsibility for the administration of justice in New South Wales, Australia. In addition, the Attorney General is one of the Law Officers of the Crown. Along with the subordinate Solicitor General, Crown Advocate, and Crown Solicitor, the Attorney General serves as the chief legal and constitutional adviser of the Crown and Government of New South Wales.

Mark Speakman Member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly

Mark Raymond Speakman, an Australian politician, is the New South Wales Attorney General since January 2017 and the Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence in the second Berejiklian ministry since April 2019. Speakman is a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Cronulla for the Liberal Party since 2011.

All ministers were appointed with effect from 2 April 2019; however Mark Speakman has served as Attorney General since 30 January 2017. Ultimately the ministers are responsible to the Parliament of New South Wales.
