Derek Lerner (born 1974 in Jacksonville, Florida), is an American contemporary artist primarily known. [1] for his ink on paper abstract drawings, currently living and working in New York City. Lerner's art has been exhibited nationally and internationally including; Robert Henry Contemporary in Brooklyn, NY, Rochester Contemporary Art Center, [2] Montserrat Galleries – Montserrat College of Art [3] in Beverly, MA, Museum of Contemporary Art – Chicago [ citation needed ], Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico, [4] Centre d’Exposition de Val-d’Or [5] in Quebec, Canada and University of Massachusetts. Education and early life

Lerner was born on March 2, 1974, in Jacksonville, Florida. In 1988 his high school curriculum was a half-day program split between two schools, Ed White for standard academics and Westside Skills Center, where he studied commercial art [ citation needed ]. In 1990 Lerner transferred schools to study Visual art at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, and later attended Atlanta College of Art (ACA) [7] in 1992, graduating with a BFA in 1995. [8] While at ACA, he studied art alongside Kara Walker, Radcliffe Bailey, Roe Ethridge, and William Downs. During Lerner's senior year of study at ACA he interned at The Interactive Media Technology Center (IMTC) at Georgia Tech, remaining there as a graphic and motion design staff member until exiting in 1995. Career

In 1994 while attending university Lerner cofounded Graphic Havoc, [10] an award winning [11] [12] [13] [14] art direction and design company with Randall J Lane, which shortly thereafter grew to include David W Merten, Peter J Rentz, and Sadek Bazaraa. While functioning as a business owner, creative director, art director and graphic designer Lerner continued to create and exhibit his artwork. Lerner currently maintains an art studio in Brooklyn [15]

Recognition

In 2020 Lerner became a recipient of an NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship for drawing. [24]

Thornton Dial was a pioneering American artist who came to prominence in the late 1980s. Dial's body of work exhibits formal variety through expressive, densely composed assemblages of found materials, often executed on a monumental scale. His range of subjects embraces a broad sweep of history, from human rights to natural disasters and current events. Dial's works are widely held in American museums; ten of Dial's works were acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2014.

Alex Brewer, also known as HENSE, is an American contemporary artist, best known for his dynamic, vivid and colorful abstract paintings and monumental wall pieces. He has been active since the 1990s. In 2002 he began accepting commissions for artwork and over the course of the last decade has established a solid reputation as a commissioned artist, having appeared in several solo and group shows.

Dawn Clements (1958–2018) was an American contemporary artist and educator. She was known for her large scale, panoramic drawings of interiors that were created with many different materials in a collage-style. Her primary mediums were sumi ink and ballpoint pen on small to large scale paper panels. In order to complete a drawing she cut and pasted paper, editing and expanding the composition to achieve the desired scale. Her completed drawings reveal her working process through the wrinkles and folds evident in the paper. She described her work as "a kind of visual diary of what [she] see[s], touch[es], and desire[s]. As I move between the mundane empirical spaces of my apartment and studio, and the glamorous fictions of movies, apparently seamless environments are disturbed through ever-shifting points of view."

Willie Young is a 20th-century American artist. Young is mainly self-taught, and his work has been exhibited alongside other prominent outsider artists, such as Bill Traylor, Nellie Mae Rowe and Thornton Dial. The main body of his work consists of delicately rendered graphite drawings.

Paul Henry Ramirez is an American contemporary artist known for his biomorphic abstractionist paintings. As his figural based paintings evolved to include geometrics, in 2010, Ramirez coined the term "biogeomorphic abstraction" to describe his own bold painting style, a fusion of biomorphic and geometric forms. He also gained notability for his site-specific installations as his paintings began to expand outside the confines of the canvas edges onto the walls of the gallery space. These site-specific installations gradually evolved to encompass the whole gallery space, creating a full environmental experience. Donald Kuspit, scholar and art critic, describes Ramirez as “an important new kind of abstract painter. .. an abstractionist playing with color and form to exciting imaginative effect.”

Aisha Tandiwe Bell is an American visual artist known for her work that creates myth and ritual through mixed media including sculpture performance, video, sound, drawing, and installation that addresses themes of fragmentation, shape-shifting, code-switching, hyphenated identities and multiple consciousness, marginalization, and lack of agency people in the African Diaspora struggle with. Through her mixed media, Aisha Tandiwe Bell's art focuses on and looks at the societal constraints of sex, race, and class. She uses each piece of her art to look at the norms that society has created around sex, race, and class and the limitations that people have placed upon themselves when it comes to these ideas. As a Jamaican-American woman in the United States, Bell uses her art to represent the displacement that she feels and the alter egos that black women have to uphold publicly and privately. The sculptures that Bell creates are intentionally cracked, fragmented, and imperfect to reflect her fractured identity.

Grace DeGennaro is an American artist. She is best known for watercolors and paintings that explore “ritual, geometry, and growth through repeated forms, serial patterns, and iconic forms like circles and diamonds.”

Nancy Floyd, born in Monticello, Minnesota in 1956, is an American photographer. Her photographic subjects mainly concern women and the female body during youth, pregnancy, and while aging. Her project She's Got a Gun comprises portraits of women and their firearms, which is linked to her Texas childhood. Floyd's work has been shown in 18 solo exhibitions and is held in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Photography and the High Museum of Art. Floyd is a professor emeritus of photography at the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design at Georgia State University.

The National Association of Artists' Organizations (NAAO) was, from 1982 through the early 2000s, a Washington, D.C.-based arts service organization which, at its height, had a constituency of over 700 artists' organizations, arts institutions, artists and arts professionals representing a cross-section of diverse aesthetics, geographic, economic, ethnic and gender-based communities especially inclusive of the creators of emerging and experimental work in the interdisciplinary, literary, media, performing and visual arts. At the apex of its activities, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, NAAO served as a catalyst and co-plaintiff on the Supreme Court case, National Endowment for the Arts v. Finley having spawned the National Campaign for Freedom of Expression. NAAO's dormancy in the early years of the 21st century led to the formation of Common Field.
