Dewey (also Gibraltar) is an unincorporated community in Skagit County, Washington, United States. [1]

History

The community was originally called Deception, then Fidalgo City and renamed in 1898 after George Dewey, a naval officer in the Spanish–American War. [2] [3] An interurban railway was completed between Anacortes and Fidalgo City in 1891 with the sole purpose of securing land grants, as it ran with a minimum number of trips before ceasing operations. [4]

Rosario Strait is a strait in northern Washington state, separating San Juan County and Skagit and Whatcom Counties. It extends from the Strait of Juan de Fuca about 23 kilometres (14 mi) north to the Strait of Georgia. The USGS defines its southern boundary as a line extending from Point Colville on Lopez Island to Rosario Head on Fidalgo Island, and its northern boundary as a line from Point Migley on Lummi Island to the east tip of Puffin Island and then to Point Thompson on Orcas Island. State Route 536 (SR 536) is a 5.38-mile-long (8.66 km) state highway serving Skagit County in the U.S. state of Washington. The highway travels southeast from SR 20 near Fredonia through Mount Vernon to an interchange with Interstate 5 (I-5) on the east side of downtown Mount Vernon. SR 536 was created during the 1964 highway renumbering as a replacement for the Anacortes branch of Primary State Highway 1 (PSH 1). SR 536 was shortened to its current route in 1973 after SR 20 was extended west and a spur route was established to serve Anacortes.

The Fidalgo City and Anacortes Railway constructed and operated a 13-mile (21 km) long electric railway extending from Anacortes, Washington, to Fidalgo City and Dewey Beach in the state of Washington, USA. Allan Island is a 292-acre (118 ha) private island bordering Rosario Strait, in Skagit County, northwest Washington (state). It adjoins Burrows Island, with the nearest city and airport close by at Anacortes on Fidalgo Island. It was named during the 1841 Wilkes expedition in honor of Lt. William Henry Allen, who was killed while commanding the USS Argus (1803) during the War of 1812.
