Diamondsandrubies (foaled 30 April 2012) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After failing to win on her only start as a two-year-old in 2014 she improved to become a top-class performer in the following year. She won a minor race on her seasonal debut and went on to win the Cheshire Oaks before finishing an unlucky fourth in the Epsom Oaks. She recorded her biggest success on her next start when she took the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes, but failed to reproduce that form in three subsequent races and was retired from the track at the end of the year.

Background

Diamondsandrubies is a bay mare with a white star bred in Ireland by Premier Bloodstock, a breeding company owned by John Magnier of the Coolmore Stud and Richard Henry. [2] During her racing career she was owned by Susan Magnier and Richard Henry's wife Roisin and was trained at Ballydoyle by Aidan O'Brien. She was ridden in six of her nine races by Seamie Heffernan.

Her sire, the Australian stallion Fastnet Rock, was a sprinter whose victories included the Lightning Stakes and the Oakleigh Plate. He sired many leading horses including Shoals and Atlantic Jewel in the Southern hemisphere before moving to the Coolmore Stud in Ireland. His European progeny have included Fascinating Rock and Qualify. [3] Diamondsandrubies' dam Quarter Moon was a top-class racemare who won the Moyglare Stud Stakes and finished second in the Irish 1000 Guineas, Epsom Oaks and Irish Oaks. Quarter Moon's dam Jude showed little ability as a racehorse, failing to win in four starts [4] before being sold to Premier Bloodstock for 92,000 guineas as a three-year-old. She made more impact as a broodmare, with her other foals including Yesterday and All My Loving (third in the Epsom Oaks). Jude's dam Alruccaba was an influential broodmare whose other descendants have included Alborada, Allegretto (Prix Royal Oak), Aussie Rules (Poule d'Essai des Poulains) and Albanova (Preis von Europa). Racing career

2014: two-year-old season

Diamondsandrubies made her first and only appearance as a two-year-old in a maiden race over seven furlongs on good to firm ground at Leopardstown Racecourse on 13 September. Starting a 22/1 outsider she made steady progress without ever looking likely to win and came home sixth of the thirteen runners, just over nine lengths behind the winner Tamadhor. [6]

2015: three-year-old season

On her three-year-old debut Diamondsandrubies started the 6/1 third choice in the betting for a nine furlong maiden on soft ground at Tipperary Racecourse on 9 April. With Heffernan in the saddle she raced in third place before taking the lead a furlong out and drew away to win by two and quarter lengths from the favourite Chinese Light with a gap of more than seven lengths back to Mohini in third. [7] Nine days later the filly was moved up in class and distance for the Listed Salsabil Stakes over ten furlongs at Naas Racecourse and was made the 5/2 joint-favourite alongside the Jessica Harrington-trained Bocca Baciata. After being hampered two furlongs from the finish she kept on well in the closing stages to take third place behind Bocca Baciata and Pleascach. Ryan Moore took the mount when Diamondsandrubies was sent to England on 6 May to contest the Cheshire Oaks over eleven and a half furlongs at Chester Racecourse. Starting the 5/4 against nine British-trained opponents she tracked the front-running Sweet Dream before accelerating into the lead a furlong out and pulling clear to win by six lengths from the John Gosden-trained Entertainment. [8] Ryan Moore commented "When I asked her, she quickened like a smart filly. For a big filly, she's gone round there very easily." [9]

On 5 June Diamondsandrubies of the eleven fillies to contest the 237th running of the Oaks Stakes over one and a half miles at Epsom Racecourse. She appeared to be closing on the leaders when she was badly hampered a furlong out and although she rallied "gamely" in the closing stages to finish fourth behind Qualify, Legatissimo and Lady of Dubai. [10] Twenty-three days later the filly was dropped back to ten furlongs and was matched against older fillies and mare in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh. Legatissimo started favourite ahead of Pleascach while the other six runners included Brooch (Lanwades Stud Stakes), Ribbons (Prix Jean Romanet) and Secret Gesture (Middleton Stakes). Starting at odds of 8/1 Diamondsandrubies was sent into the lead by Heffernan after a furlong and was never headed thereafter. She was strongly challenged by Legatissimo in the final strides but held on under pressure to win by a short head with Ribbons a neck away in third. [11] Heffernan commented: "Sometimes Epsom finishes a horse and sometimes the good horses thrive on it. She's obviously good. We thought she'd stay and I jumped and she landed in front and I was happy enough to go along with it. I knew they were coming. I knew where the line was. I was a bit unlucky at Epsom. Aidan trains them to progress from run to run and today she was at her best, so hopefully there will be more improvement." [12]

Diamondsandrubies was made second favourite for the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood Racecourse but never looked like winning and finished last of the nine runners behind Legatissimo. The filly was sent to France in autumn for two races at Longchamp Racecourse but had no success. In the Prix Vermeille in September she came home eighth behind Treve beaten more than seventeen lengths by the winner. Three weeks later she ended her track career by running unplaced behind Covert Love in the Prix de l'Opéra.

Qualify is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. On 5 June 2015 she was a 50/1 winner of The Oaks. She ran seven times as a juvenile in 2014, winning a maiden race and the Group Three C. L. Weld Park Stakes but was well-beaten when tried against the best fillies of her generation in the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. In the spring of 2015 she was initially disappointing as she finished unplaced in both the 1000 Guineas and the Irish 1000 Guineas before being stepped up in distance and winning the Oaks.

Arabian Queen Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Arabian Queen is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed good form as a juvenile, winning two races including the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes. In the following year she won the Princess Elizabeth Stakes but was beaten in her next three starts before recording an upset win over Golden Horn in the International Stakes.

Pure Grain was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In 1994 she won two of her five races including the Prestige Stakes as well as finishing third in the Princess Margaret Stakes and fourth when favourite for the Fillies' Mile. In the following year she emerged as one of the best middle distance fillies of her generation in Europe with wins in the Musidora Stakes, Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks. She also finished third in The Oaks and fifth in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. After her retirement from racing she had some success as a dam of winners.

Minding (horse) Irish Thoroughbred racehorse

Minding is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She was among the leading two-year-old fillies of her generation in Europe in 2015 when she won three of her five races including the Moyglare Stud Stakes in Ireland and the Fillies' Mile in England. On her first appearance of 2016 the filly posted a decisive victory in the classic 1000 Guineas but was subsequently beaten when favourite for the Irish 1,000 Guineas. She went on to win a second classic in The Oaks in June, the first filly to complete the Guineas-Oaks double since Kazzia in 2002. She went on to take her fifth and sixth Group One races with wins in the Pretty Polly Stakes and the Nassau Stakes. She then defeated male opposition to take the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. At the end of the year she was named Cartier Horse of the Year and the world's best three-year-old filly. She won on her reappearance in 2017 but subsequently suffered an injury which led to her retirement later that year without racing again.

Pass the Peace was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best two-year-old fillies of her generation in Britain and Ireland in 1988, when she won four races including the Debutante Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes. After winning the Fred Darling Stakes on her three-year-old debut she failed to win again, although she was placed in both the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and the Sun Chariot Stakes. She later became a successful broodmare.

After being beaten in her first three races she showed significant progress in the autumn of her two-year-old season winning three races of increasing prestige. She followed up a win in a maiden race with a victory in the Listed Staffordstown Stud Stakes before ending her season by taking the Group One Fillies' Mile. She failed to win as a three-year-old but finished second in the Musidora Stakes and fourth in the Irish Oaks.

Pleascach Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Pleascach is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse whose wins included the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Yorkshire Oaks. Bred and trained by Jim Bolger she showed promise in two starts as a two-year-old in 2015, finishing fourth in a Group Three race on her debut and then winning a maiden race. In the spring of 2016 she finished second on her first appearance, won the Blue Wind Stakes and then defeated Found in the Irish 1000 Guineas. In summer she was beaten by Curvy in the Ribblesdale Stakes and disappointed in the Pretty Polly Stakes before returning from a lengthy absence to win the Yorkshire Oaks. On her final appearance of the year she finished fourth in a top-class international field for the Irish Champion Stakes.

Seventh Heaven (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Seventh Heaven is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed little promise as a two-year-old and was well beaten in maiden races at Leopardstown and Newmarket. As a three-year-old she showed improved form as she was moved up in distance, winning a maiden at Dundalk and the Lingfield Oaks Trial at Lingfield. She ran poorly in The Oaks but then emerged as a top-class performer with wins over strong fields in the Irish Oaks and the Yorkshire Oaks.

Colorspin was a French-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed great promise as a two-year-old in 1985 when she won both of her races in convincing fashion. In the following year she finished third in the Musidora Stakes and fourth in The Oaks before recording her biggest success with an easy win in the Irish Oaks. She was beaten in her two remaining starts and was retired racing at the end of the year.

Princess Pati was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After showing promise when finishing third on her only start as a two-year-old in 1983 she improved in the following year to become the best filly of her generation in Ireland. With the implementation of front-running tactics she won four races including the Pretty Polly Stakes and the Irish Oaks as well as finishing third in the Irish Champion Stakes. She failed to reproduce her best form in 1985 and was retired from racing at the end of the year. As a broodmare she produced winners, the best of whom was the Cambridgeshire Handicap winner Pasternak.

Covert Love Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Covert Love is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After being sold relatively cheaply as a yearling she showed some promise when finishing fifth in her only start as a two-year-old in 2014. In the following year she made rapid improvement, winning two minor races before winning the Hoppings Stakes and then stepping up to Group 1 class to take the Irish Oaks. She added a second Group 1 win in autumn when she won the Prix de l'Opéra in France. She was retired from racing in 2016 and was exported to become a broodmare in Japan.

Dance Design is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She competed in five different countries and won seven times from nineteen starts in a track career which lasted from August 1995 to November 1998.

Dark Lomond was an Irish thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed promise when finishing second on her only run as a juvenile in 1987 and developed into a high-class middle-distance performer and stayer in the following year. She won the Phoenix Oaks Trial and the Pretty Polly Stakes in June 1988 and returned in October to record her biggest victory in the Irish St Leger. After her racing career ended she became a broodmare and had some success as a dam of winners.

Quarter Moon was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2001 she showed considerable promise, taking the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on the second of her two starts. In the following year she failed to win but showed top class form to finish second in four Group 1 races: the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Epsom Oaks, the Irish Oaks and the Nassau Stakes. After retiring from racing at the end of the year she became a successful broodmare whose foals have included the Pretty Polly Stakes winner Diamondsandrubies.

Speedy Boarding is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After finishing third on her only appearance as a juvenile in 2014 she won the Ballymacoll Stud Stakes in the following spring but was beaten in her other five starts and appeared to be a few pounds below the best fillies of her generation. She finally emerged as a top class racemare in 2016 when she recorded three major victories in France, taking the Prix Corrida, Prix Jean Romanet and Prix de l'Opéra. She was retired to become a broodmare at the end of the year.

All At Sea was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from October 1991 until September 1992 she recorded five wins and three second places from nine starts. After easily winning her only race as a juvenile she won her first three starts in the following spring including the Pretty Polly Stakes and the Musidora Stakes. She went on to run second in the Epsom Oaks, Nassau Stakes and International Stakes before recording her biggest success in the Prix du Moulin. She was retired from racing after finishing fourth in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. As a broodmare she produced several minor winners but no top-class performers.

Zee Zee Top is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She did not race until the autumn of her three-year-old season when she won a minor race on her debut and then finished second in the Severals Stakes. In the following year she showed top-class form to win the Middleton Stakes and Prix de l'Opéra as well as being placed in the Pretty Polly Stakes and Nassau Stakes. As a broodmare she produced Izzi Top and Jazzi Top.
