Yesterday (foaled 27 February 2000) was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed considerable promise as a two-year-old in 2002, winning a maiden race and being placed in the Debutante Stakes and the Rockfel Stakes before taking the Eyrefield Stakes. In the following spring she won the Irish 1000 Guineas and appeared an unlucky loser when narrowly beaten in The Oaks. She failed to win again but finished placed in the Prix Vermeille, Prix de l'Opéra and the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

Background

Yesterday is a bay mare with a broad white blaze and four white socks bred in Ireland by Premier Bloodstock, a breeding company owned by John Magnier of the Coolmore Stud and Richard Henry. [3] During her racing career she was owned by Susan Magnier and Richard Henry's wife Roisin and was trained at Ballydoyle by Aidan O'Brien. She was ridden in most of her races by Mick Kinane.

She was from the fifteenth crop of foals sired by Sadler's Wells, who won the Irish 2000 Guineas, Eclipse Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes in 1984 went on to be the Champion sire on fourteen occasions. [4] [5] Yesterday's dam Jude showed little ability as a racehorse, failing to win in four starts [6] before being sold to Premier Bloodstock for 92,000 guineas as a three-year-old. She made more impact as a broodmare, with her other foals including Quarter Moon (second in The Oaks) and All My Loving (third in the Epsom Oaks). Several of Jude's foals were named in reference to Beatles songs: apart from Yesterday ("Yesterday") and All My Loving ("All My Loving") they included Magicalmysterytour ("Magical Mystery Tour") and Betterbetterbetter (from the lyric of "Hey Jude"). Jude's dam Alruccaba was an influential broodmare whose other descendants have included Alborada, Allegretto (Prix Royal Oak), Aussie Rules (Poule d'Essai des Poulains) and Albanova (Preis von Europa). Racing career

2002: two-year-old season

Yesterday began her racing career in the Listed Fillies' Sprint Stakes at Naas Racecourse on 3 June in which she finished eighth of the eleven runners behind the British challenger Rag Top. Later that month she started 1/2 favourite for a seven furlong maiden race at Tipperary Racecourse and won "comfortably" by two lengths from Encircle. [8] The filly was then stepped up in class and started 5/4 favourite for the Group Three Debutante Stakes at the Curragh in August but was beaten into second by the 14/1 outsider Rainbows For All.

After a break of almost two month Yesterday was sent to France for the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac over 1600 metres at Longchamp Racecourse on 6 October. After turning into the straight in third place she was outpaced in the closing stages and finished sixth of the ten runners behind Six Perfections. Less than two weeks later she appeared at Newmarket Racecourse in England to contest the Rockfel Stakes and finished third behind Luvah Girl and Casual Look. On her final appearance of the year Yesterday was matched against male opposition in the Listed Eyrefield Stakes over nine furlongs on heavy ground at Leopardstown Racecourse on 10 November. Starting the 6/4 favourite in an eighteen-runner field she took the lead a furlong from the finish and accelerated away from her rivals to win "easily" by four lengths. [9] Her win meant that Kinane clinched his 12th Irish Champion Jockey title. [10]

2003: three-year-old season

Yesterday began her second season in the 1000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile at Newmarket on 4 May in which she started a 20/1 outsider and finished eighth of the nineteen runners as Russian Rhythm won from Six Perfections, Intercontinental and Soviet Song. Three weeks later at the Curragh Yesterday was one of eight fillies to contest the Irish 1000 Guineas and started the 11/2 second choice in the betting behind Six Perfections who was made the odds-on favourite. The other runners included Walayef (Round Tower Stakes, Athasi Stakes), Dimitrova (Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes), Luminata (Silver Flash Stakes) and Cat Belling (Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial). Yesterday raced in fourth place as L'Ancresse set the pace before Dimitrova went to the front two furlongs from the finish. She overtook Dimitrova inside the final furlong and held off the late challenge of Six Perfections to win by a short head. [11] The runner-up appeared somewhat unfortunate as her jockey Johnny Murtagh was unable to obtain a clear run until the final strides. [12] Aidan O'Brien commented "Mick's ride was perfection. Yesterday stops when she hits the front but he couldn't wait any longer than he did. She goes on fast ground but she does like an ease. She will go for the Oaks". Kinane said, "Some days the luck bounces for you and some days it doesn't. Johnny found himself in one of those positions today. But in fairness to Yesterday, she did everything right". [13]

On 6 June Yesterday was moved up in distance and started 100/30 favourite for the 225th running of the Oaks Stakes over one and a half miles at Epsom Downs Racecourse. After being restrained in the early stages she attempted to move into contention in the straight but was repeatedly blocked and hampered before obtaining a clear run inside the final furlong. She finished strongly but failed by a neck to peg back Casual Look, appearing to be an unlucky loser. [14] [15] The Irish Times's correspondent stated that she was "clearly the best filly in the race". [16] In the Irish Oaks at the Curragh on 13 July she started the 11/8 favourite but finished fourth behind Vintage Tipple, L'Ancresse and Casual Look.

After a late summer break Yesterday was sent to France for the Group One Prix Vermeille over 2400 metres at Longchamp on 14 September. Ridden by Jamie Spencer she turned into the straight in fifth place and stayed on well but failed by a head to overhaul the Godolphin filly Mezzo Soprano. The filly was matched against older fillies and mares when she returned to Longchamp for the Prix de l'Opéra over 2000 metres on 5 October. She was held up at the back of the field before making a strong late run and finished second, beaten a head by the British-trained four-year-old Zee Zee Top with Bright Sky (winner of the race in 2002) a neck away in third. Yesterday was then sent to America for the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita Park on 25 October in which she stayed on from the rear of the field to finish third behind Islington and L'Ancresse. 2004: four-year-old season

Yesterday remained in training as a four-year-old and was ridden by Spencer in all three of her starts. After an absence of more than ten months she returned in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on 11 September and finished fifth of the six runners behind Soviet Song. She then ran for the second time in the Prix de l'Opéra and finished fourth behind Alexander Goldrun. She ended her racing career with a second attempt at the Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Lone Star Park on 30 October and finished fifth behind Ouija Board in a twelve-runner field.

Islington is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from August 2001 until November 2003 she won six of her fifteen races including four at Group One level. As a three-year-old she won the Musidora Stakes, and after disappointing in The Oaks, she returned to win the Nassau Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks. Blue Wind was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the classic Oaks Stakes in 1981. She showed promising form as a two-year-old in 1980 when she won two of her five races including the Silken Glider Stakes. In the following year she finished second in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and then showed her best form when moved up in distance, winning the Oaks by seven lengths and following up in the Irish Oaks a month later. In 1982 she was campaigned in the United States without success. She made no impact as a broodmare.

The 2003 1000 Guineas Stakes was a horse race held at Newmarket Racecourse on Sunday 4 May 2003. It was the 190th running of the 1000 Guineas.

Sophisticat was a Kentucky-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. A daughter of Storm Cat out of the champion filly Serena's Song she was sold for $3.7 million as a yearling and raced in Europe for the Coolmore Stud organization. Racing as a two-year-old, she won only one minor race but was placed in the Queen Mary Stakes, Silver Flash Stakes, Lowther Stakes, Moyglare Stud Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes. In the following year she won the Prix de la Grotte and finished second in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches before recording her biggest success in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. She was retired at the end of the year and had some success as a broodmare.

Kissing Cousin was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she showed progressive form, winning two minor races before finishing second in the May Hill Stakes and third in the Fillies' Mile. In the following year she ran poorly on her seasonal debut but won then won a minor stakes race before ending her racing career with a win in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. She was then retired from racing. She had little success as a broodmare, producing only two minor winners.

Sunspangled was an Irish thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 1998 until September 1999, she won twice and finished second twice in ten starts. As a two-year-old, she won on her debut but was beaten in her next two races before recording her most important victory in the Group One Fillies' Mile at Ascot Racecourse. In the following year, she was campaigned exclusively in Group One events and failed to win, although she did finish second in the Irish Oaks. She has made little impact as a broodmare.

Arctique Royale was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she made only two appearances, winning a maiden race at the Curragh on her debut and then taking the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the same track. She was beaten on her first run of 1982 but then recorded her biggest win in the Irish 1000 Guineas. She was beaten in her last four races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. She had considerable success as a broodmare.

Alydaress was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted for a little over six months from April to October 1989 she won three of her six races. After finishing third on her debut she won a maiden race and then defeated top-class fields to take the Ribblesdale Stakes and Irish Oaks. In her two subsequent races she finished second in the Yorkshire Oaks and the Gran Premio del Jockey Club. She was retired from racing at the end of the year and had some success as a broodmare.

Moonstone is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for her win in the Irish Oaks. Unraced as a two-year-old, her six-race track career lasted from April to October 2008. After finishing second in a maiden race on her debut she ran fourth in the Musidora Stakes and second in The Oaks before recording her first and only victory in the Irish Oaks. She finished unplaced in two subsequent races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. As a broodmare she has produced several good winners including US Army Ranger.

Dance Design is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She competed in five different countries and won seven times from nineteen starts in a track career which lasted from August 1995 to November 1998.

Dark Lomond was an Irish thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed promise when finishing second on her only run as a juvenile in 1987 and developed into a high-class middle-distance performer and stayer in the following year. She won the Phoenix Oaks Trial and the Pretty Polly Stakes in June 1988 and returned in October to record her biggest victory in the Irish St Leger. After her racing career ended she became a broodmare and had some success as a dam of winners.

Kastoria is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for her upset victory over Yeats in the 2006 Irish St. Leger. Bred and owned by Aga Khan IV and trained by John Oxx she was a specialist stayer who competed in five different countries and won six of her thirteen races. Unraced at two or three years she began her racing career in 2005 when she won the Galtres Stakes and finished second in the Give Thanks Stakes, Park Hill Stakes and Prix de Royallieu. In the following year she won the Vintage Crop Stakes, Curragh Cup and Ballyroan Stakes before recording her biggest win in the Irish St. Leger. She also finished second in the Hong Kong Vase on her final racecourse appearance. As a broodmare she has produced some minor winners.

Rebelline was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She won six of her eleven races in a racing career which lasted from October 2000 until May 2002. As a juvenile she won on her debut and then finished second to Vinnie Roe in the Eyrefield Stakes. In the following year she won the Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial and the Pretty Polly Stakes as well as finishing third in the Prix de l'Opéra. She reached her peak as a four-year-old in 2002 when she was undefeated in three starts, taking the Gladness Stakes, Mooresbridge Stakes and Tattersalls Gold Cup. After her retirement from racing she had considerable success as a dam of winners.

Sequoyah is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a juvenile in 2000 she showed high-class form, winning the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and being placed in both the Railway Stakes and the Debutante Stakes. In the following year she failed to win but ran well against top quality competition to finish fourth in the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Irish Oaks. After her retirement from racing she became a successful broodmare, most notably producing Henrythenavigator.

Necklace is a British, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She had her greatest success as a two-year-old in 2003 when she won two of her four races including the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following year failed to win but did finish third in the Beverly D. Stakes and fourth in the Epsom Oaks before being retired from racing with a record of two wins from nine starts in four different counties. She had very little success as a broodmare, producing only one minor winner.

Quarter Moon was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2001 she showed considerable promise, taking the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on the second of her two starts. In the following year she failed to win but showed top class form to finish second in four Group 1 races: the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Epsom Oaks, the Irish Oaks and the Nassau Stakes. After retiring from racing at the end of the year she became a successful broodmare whose foals have included the Pretty Polly Stakes winner Diamondsandrubies.

Flutter Away was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed her best form as a two-year-old in 1987 when she won three of her five races including the Railway Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes and was rated the best filly of her generation in Ireland. She made no impact in two races as a three-year-old and was retired from racing at the end of the year. She was then exported to become a broodmare in Japan where she produced four winners.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Billesdon Brook</span> British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Billesdon Brook was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. She was a useful and consistent juvenile in 2017, winning three races including the Prestige Stakes and being placed on four of her other five starts. In the following spring she ran fourth on her seasonal debut and then recorded a 66/1 upset win in the 1000 Guineas. She failed to win again that year but returned to form in 2019 to win the Queen Charlotte Fillies' Stakes, Oak Tree Stakes and Sun Chariot Stakes. As a five-year-old she was unable to win in six attempts but finished second in four races including the Falmouth Stakes.

In the following year she was beaten in her first three races but then recorded further major win in the Pretty Polly Stakes, Matron Stakes, and Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Diamondsandrubies is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After failing to win on her only start as a two-year-old in 2014 she improved to become a top-class performer in the following year. She won a minor race on her seasonal debut and went on to win the Cheshire Oaks before finishing an unlucky fourth in the Epsom Oaks. She recorded her biggest success on her next start when she took the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes, but failed to reproduce that form in three subsequent races and was retired from the track at the end of the year.
