The Jakarta Special Region is administratively equal to a province with special status as the largest city of Indonesia. Instead of a mayor, the executive head of Jakarta is a governor. The governor of Jakarta is an elected politician who, along with the vice governor and 106 members of the Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD), is accountable for the strategic government of the city of Jakarta.
Anies Rasyid Baswedan is an Indonesian academic, activist, and politician who served as the Governor of Jakarta from 2017 to 2022. A student activist and political analyst before entering public service, he served as the Rector of Paramadina University before being appointed to be Minister of Education and Culture in Joko Widodo administration. He is also the founder of Indonesia Mengajar, a program that selects, trains, and assigns university graduates to serve in a one-year teaching mission across the country. He is the grandson of nationalist, journalist, and freedom fighter Abdurrahman Baswedan, and the cousin of Novel Baswedan. He is a candidate for President of Indonesia in the 2024 election.
Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno is an Indonesian businessman, investor and politician who is the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, and was the Deputy Governor of Jakarta. He was elected along with Anies Baswedan in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election after defeating incumbent pair Basuki Tjahaja Purnama and Djarot Saiful Hidayat. He resigned the office to run as Prabowo Subianto's running mate for the 2019 Indonesian presidential election.
General elections were held on 11 July and 20 September 2012 in Jakarta to elect the governor of Jakarta for a five-year term. Incumbent governor Fauzi Bowo was running for a second successive term.
Basuki Tjahaja Purnama is an Indonesian businessman, politician, and former governor of Jakarta. He is colloquially known by his Hakka Chinese name, Ahok. He was the second minority governor of Jakarta with ethnic Chinese ancestry and also of the Evangelical faith, following Henk Ngantung, who was the sole Catholic and ethnic Minahasan governor to hold office from 1964–65.
Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, commonly referred to as AHY, is an Indonesian politician and former army major who is currently serving as the leader of the Democratic Party. Serving in the Army from 2000 until 2016, he is the executive director of the Yudhoyono Institute and founder of the Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono Foundation. He is the son of former Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, more commonly known as SBY.
November 2016 Jakarta protests refer to an Islamist mass protest which took place on 4 November 2016 in Jakarta, Indonesia. It was attended by an estimated 50,000–200,000 protesters, and was aimed against the Governor of Jakarta Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, for alleged blasphemy of the Quran, the Islamic holy book. A counter-protest led by government officials and social activists in support of interfaith unity was led on 30 November.
Gubernatorial elections were held in Jakarta as part of the 2017 simultaneous elections on 15 February and 19 April 2017 to elect the governor of Jakarta to a five-year term. Incumbent governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, popularly referred to as "Ahok", and his deputy Djarot Saiful Hidayat were running for re-election to a second term. Basuki, who inherited his current position from his running mate Joko Widodo when he won the 2014 Indonesian presidential election, would have become the first elected Chinese-Christian governor of Jakarta had he won.
On 24 May 2017, two explosions occurred at a bus terminal in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta. Police confirmed that the explosions were caused by multiple explosive devices found in the toilet and in another part of the terminal. The bombings killed five people: three policemen and two attackers. The 11 injured people were taken to multiple hospitals across the Eastern Jakarta area.
December 2016 Jakarta protests, also known as 212 Action, the 3rd Defend Islam Action, and the 2 December Protest, was a mass protest led by Islamist groups which took place on 2 December 2016, in Jakarta, Indonesia. During the protest, marchers demanded the termination of the gubernatorial office held by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok), who had been accused of blasphemy. The protest was the second demonstration against Ahok in 2016 following the previous rally which took place on 4 November, and it was succeeded by the February 2017 Jakarta protests.
The 2018 North Sumatra gubernatorial election took place on 27 June 2018 as part of the simultaneous local elections. It was held to elect the governor of North Sumatra along with their deputy, whilst members of the provincial council will be re-elected in 2019.
Joko Widodo's presidential campaign in 2014 was announced on 14 March 2014, when his political party PDI-P declared him as the party's candidate for the upcoming election in 2014. He was then the Governor of Jakarta, and previously the Mayor of Surakarta. With former vice president Jusuf Kalla as his running mate, he was elected as President of Indonesia following election on 9 July and official KPU announcement on 22 July.
Edy Rahmayadi is an Indonesian politician and former general who is the governor of North Sumatra. He is a former lieutenant general in the Indonesian Army, commanding Kostrad between 2015 and 2018. Additionally, he was also chairman of PSSI between 2016 and 2019.

Abraham Lunggana, popularly known as Lulung or Haji Lulung, was an Indonesian politician and businessman who was a member of the People's Representative Council and was the deputy speaker of Jakarta Council.
Mohamad Taufik was an Indonesian politician who was a member of the Jakarta Regional People's Representative Council from 25 August 2009 until his death in 2023. He was a member of the Gerindra Party for most of his legislature career, but resigned from the party in October 2022. Having been convicted of corruption in 2004, he received significant attention in 2019 when he successfully filed a lawsuit against the General Elections Commission to run for his second term in the legislative body.
Soni Sumarsono is an Indonesian civil servant who was the Director-General of Regional Autonomy in the Ministry of Home Affairs. As part of his position, he has become acting governors for the provinces of South Sulawesi, Jakarta and North Sulawesi.
Saefullah was an Indonesian bureaucrat and teacher. He primarily served in the regional government of Jakarta, reaching the rank of regional secretary in 2014. He had previously served as appointed mayor of Central Jakarta between 2010 and 2014, following a seven-year career in Jakarta's educational offices. He died in 2020 due to COVID-19.
A gubernatorial election will be held in Jakarta in 2024 alongside other local elections nationwide to elect the Governor of Jakarta to a five-year term.
Heru Budi Hartono is an Indonesian bureaucrat who has been the acting Governor of Jakarta since 2022 and Head of the Presidential Secretariat since 2017. He was the former Head of Jakarta Regional Asset Financial Management Agency under Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama between 2015 and 2017. A former mayor of North Jakarta, Heru was appointed by Governor Basuki to be a candidate for deputy governor in the 2017 Jakarta Regional Head Elections if he only advanced through an independent path. He is currently the acting Governor of Jakarta replacing Anies Baswedan since 17 October 2022, until the 2024 Jakarta election.
