Dorset and Wilts Rugby Football Union (Dorset & Wilts RFU) is the governing body for rugby union in the counties of Dorset and Wiltshire, England. Dorset & Wilts RFU is a Constituent Body of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and is responsible for the management and administration of the game within the counties of Dorset and Wiltshire of all forms and at all levels. Originally Dorset and Wiltshire had their own county teams but would start to merge into one body towards the end of the 1930s, having already played a combined match against Hampshire in 1935–36 which Dorset & Wilts won 9–6. By 1939 Dorset & Wilts agreed to become a unified rugby football union to take part in the 1940–41 County Championships but this was postponed by the outbreak of World War II. After the war Dorset & Wilts played its first official county match in 1947 and attained full county status from the RFU in 1949. [1]

Role and responsibility

Dorset & Wilts RFU's role is to promote and develop rugby within Dorset and Wiltshire by supporting its clubs and encouraging all those who wish to participate including players, coaches, referees and administrators. It works in partnership with the RFU and liaises with local authorities and other county and regional organisations to achieve this. Its remit includes:

To help achieve these aims it holds an annual conference for club officials and manages and administrates specific RFU projects including RFU funded campaigns to help clubs recruit and retain players, coaches and administrators. It also nominates candidates and tutors from its Clubs to attend the regional RFU leadership academy.

D&WRFU has a strategic plan supported by annual action plans and works with the RFU to:

Badge and colours

The blazon for the Dorset and Wilts RFU arms are; vert, an orle argent per fess (at nombril point), three lions passant guardant in pale argent, a bustard wings elevated and addorsed also argent. The arms are generally shown on a shield described either as a badge or elegant.

The green and white colour of the arms and playing kit are taken from the arms of the Wiltshire County Council which were chosen to represent the white chalk and green grass of the North Wessex Downs. The three lions representing Dorset are derived from the old seal of Dorchester (the county town) which had borne the former royal arms of England; these are placed in a superior position to the Wiltshire bustard in order to compensate for the use of Wiltshire's colours (the colours from the Flag of Dorset are not represented as it was only adopted by the county in 2008, long after the formation of the Dorset and Wilts RFU, though it could now be argued that the white represents Dorset and the green stands for Wiltshire). The bustard represents Wiltshire because it was in this county that the bird was last seen in the late 1890s before being declared extinct in the United Kingdom (the great bustard was adopted as the crest of Wiltshire in recognition of this fact) and it is on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire that efforts are currently under way to reintroduce the species.

Senior men's side

The senior side regularly enters the RFU's County Championship Division 3 and have won it on three occasions, in 2010, 2011 and 2018.

In 2010 the Twin Counties won two of their three pool matches against Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Sussex, and then defeated Oxfordshire in the semi-final. They defeated Leicestershire 36–26 scoring five tries to only one conceded at Twickenham on 30 May 2010. Leicestershire had booked their finals spot with a 37–35 victory over Cumbria. [2]

In the 2011 competition they beat Berkshire 33–22 and Oxfordshire 54–12 in the pool matches. They then beat Essex 61–37 in the semi-final and won the final at Twickenham on Sunday 29 May 2011, beating Surrey 43–22.

In 2011 the Dorset and Wilts U20 side played 4 and won 3 in the U20 County Championship competition. They beat Berkshire 21–15, then Oxfordshire 21–32 and Buckinghamshire 0–36 before losing 58–10 to Gloucestershire in the quarter-finals.

There are currently 51 clubs affiliated with the Dorset & Wilts RFU, most of which have teams at both senior and junior level. Although several teams from Somerset play in the Dorset & Wilts regional leagues, these sides are still members of the Somerset RFU.

    Senior County Club Competitions

    Since 2001–02 the league system in this region has been contested by clubs from Dorset and Wiltshire (as well as the occasional team from Somerset) and is run by the Dorset & Wilts RFU. Prior to this clubs from Berkshire had also taken part but they now play in a league with clubs from Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Currently there are several regional divisions which combine 1st, 2nd, 3rd and even 4th teams in the region including:

    At colts level (under 18) there is an annual league and knockout cup competition.

    Preliminary matches are usually played in January and February with the finals taking place in mid-April. At each stage only the winners of each match progress to get to the cup final match. There are two consolation matches, the plate final (to determine third and fourth place) and the bowl final. Trophies are presented to the winning team of each of the three final matches and individual medals to the winners of the cup final.

    Due to RFU restrictions on playing time at Under 18 level, no extra time will be played in the event of a tied match.

    Hampshire Rugby Football Union is the governing body for rugby union in the county of Hampshire, England. It represent clubs sides not just from Hampshire but also from the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands, who take part in many of the competitions organized by the Hampshire RFU.

    Regional 1 South West is a level five league in the English rugby union system. It is one of six leagues at this level. When this division began in 1987 it was known as South West Division 1. The format of the league was changed at the beginning of the 2009–10 season following reorganisation by the Rugby Football Union, and the name change from National League 3 to South West Premier was introduced for the 2017–18 season by the RFU in order to lessen confusion for what is a series of regional leagues. Regional 1 South West, is the highest regional rugby union league covering South West England. The club finishing in first place is automatically promoted to National League 2 West. Relegated teams drop down to either Regional 2 South West or Regional 2 Severn, depending on their location.

    Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier is a division at level 8 of the English rugby union system featuring teams from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Promoted teams usually move up to Southern Counties North while relegated teams used to drop to the Berks/Bucks & Oxon Championship, although this division has been discontinued as of the end of the 2018–19 season. Each year three teams are picked to take part in the RFU Senior Vase.

    North Dorset RFC is a rugby union club in Gillingham, Dorset, who have been in existence since 1951. They currently play in Southern Counties South and are based at Slaughtergate, Gillingham. The club runs three senior teams and a veterans side, the junior section starts at Under 7's up to a Colts XV.

    Counties 1 Southern South is a level 7 league in the Rugby Football Union South West Division, the rugby union governing body for South West England, part of the Rugby Football Union. When league rugby first began in 1987 it was a single league known as Southern Counties but since 1996 the division was split into two regional leagues: Southern Counties North and Southern Counties South. Counties 1 Southern South currently sits at the seventh tier of club rugby union in England and primarily features teams based in Dorset and Wiltshire.

Promoted teams tended to move up to Dorset & Wilts 2 North and there was no relegation. The league was created in 2005 and was disbanded after the 2019–20 season.

From this league teams can either be promoted to Dorset & Wilts 1 North or relegated to Dorset & Wilts 3 North. Originally consisting of one league, Dorset & Wilts 1 split into north and south regional divisions in 2004. It had even had teams based in Berkshire participating until 2001, at which time they left to join the Buckinghamshire & Oxon leagues.

The league was created in 2005 and disbanded after the 2018–19 season.

    Dorset & Wilts 3 West was English Rugby Union league, forming part of the South West Division, for clubs based in western Dorset. Promoted teams tended to move up to Dorset & Wilts 2 North or Dorset & Wilts 2 South depending on geographical location and there was no relegation. The league was originally created as Berks/Dorset/Wilts 3 West in 1988 and ran until 1992 until it merged with Berks/Dorset/Wilts 3 East to form Berks/Dorset/Wilts 3. The division would return as Dorset & Wilts 3 West in 2006. By the end of the 2008–09 season, the league was disbanded and clubs were transferred to Dorset & Wilts 3 North or Dorset & Wilts 3 South.

    The 2013 County Championship Shield was the 9th version of the annual English rugby union County Championship, organized by the RFU for the tier 3 English counties. Each county drew its players from rugby union clubs from the fifth tier and below of the English rugby union league system. The counties were divided into three pools of four teams each, based roughly on regional lines, with the winner of each group plus the best runner-up going through to the semi-finals, with the winners of those games meeting in the final held at Twickenham Stadium. Typically there is no promotion or relegation out of or into the County Championship Shield. Surrey were the reigning champions.

    The RFU Intermediate Cup is a rugby union national knockout cup competition in England run by the Rugby Football Union. It is contested by teams at level 7 of the English rugby union system. While the competition is a national one, it is however split into regions until the semi-finals with the final being held at Twickenham Stadium in London. It was first contested in 1997. Presently, the RFU Intermediate Cup is the third most important club cup competition in England, behind the Premiership Rugby Cup and RFU Championship Cup.

    The RFU Junior Vase is a rugby union national knockout cup competition in England run by the Rugby Football Union, which has been competed for since 1990. It is mostly contested by 1st XV teams at level 9 of the English rugby union system, although sides as low as level 12 or even outside the league system can sometimes enter. The competition is a national one, but split into regions until the national semi-finals with the final being held at Twickenham Stadium in London. Presently, the RFU Junior Vase is the fifth most important club cup competition in England, behind the Premiership Rugby Cup, RFU Championship Cup, RFU Intermediate Cup and RFU Senior Vase.
