"Down at the Doctors" is a song by the band Dr. Feelgood. The track was recorded in 1978, [1] and appeared on Private Practice , an album by Dr. Feelgood that was released in October that year. [1]

"Down at the Doctors" was also released as a single in the UK in September 1978, a month prior to the album's issue. Written by Mickey Jupp, and produced by Richard Gottehrer, [2] the song was Dr. Feelgood's third hit single [3] and continues to be played by the band. The cover photograph was taken at 33 Weymouth Street, London. [4]

It reached number 48 in the UK Singles Chart, and spent five weeks in the listing. [3]

The band re-recorded the title live for the B-side of their April 1979 single release, "As Long as the Price Is Right".

In addition to Private Practice , versions of the song appear on numerous other Dr. Feelgood albums, including Casebook, Case History, Live in London, Stupidity Plus, Finely Tuned and the eponymous album Down at the Doctors; the final album recorded by Lee Brilleaux, in January 1994, shortly before his death. It also appears on most of the band's compilation albums. [5]

Dr. Feelgood (band)

Dr. Feelgood are an English pub rock band formed in 1971. Hailing from Canvey Island, Essex, the group are best known for early singles such as "She Does It Right", "Roxette", "Back in the Night" and "Milk and Alcohol". The group's original distinctively British R&B sound was centred on Wilko Johnson's choppy guitar style. Along with Johnson, the original band line-up included singer Lee Brilleaux and the rhythm section of John B. Sparks, known as "Sparko", on bass guitar and John Martin, known as "The Big Figure", on drums. Although their most commercially productive years were the early to mid-1970s, and in spite of Brilleaux's death in 1994 of lymphoma, a version of the band continues to tour and record to this day.

Wilko Johnson is an English guitarist, singer, songwriter and occasional actor. He was a member of the pub rock/rhythm and blues band Dr. Feelgood in the 1970s. Johnson is known for his distinctive guitar playing style which he achieved by not using a pick but instead relying on fingerstyle. This enabled him to play rhythm guitar and riffs or solos at the same time creating a highly percussive guitar sound.

Wanda Jackson recorded the song for her first album, Wanda Jackson, released in 1958. The song was released as a single by Jackson in 1960 and entered the UK chart on 1 September of that year, spending eight weeks there and reaching #32; it also reached #37 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960. The Jackson version was later featured in the 1989 film Dead Poets Society. Paul McCartney also recorded and released the song on his 1999 Run Devil Run album. His original song "Run Devil Run", on the album of the same name, also has a similar melody. A cover of "Let's Have a Party" by Sonia was included on the 2010 remastered edition of her 1989 album Everybody Knows.
