The Durban Marathon (also known as the Durban International Marathon) is an annual road-based marathon hosted by Durban, South Africa, since 2021. [3] [4] The marathon is a World Athletics Label Road Race. [5] During the race weekend, a 10K race is also offered. [6]
The inaugural race was held on 5 September 2021. [4] The marathon was won by Kenyan runner Samuel Naibei and South African runner Zinhle Shabalala, with finish times of 2:08:43 and 2:44:00, respectively. [7] [4]
During the 2022 race, Zimbabwean runner Isaac Mpofu, who crossed the finish line first, was disqualified because he was wearing only one bib number when the rules of the marathon required runners to wear two bibs: one on the front and one on the back. [8] Mpofu stated that he was surprised to be disqualified because, after he had discovered on the morning of the race that his sealed race packet only contained one bib number, the race judge had confirmed that Mpofu could compete. [8] Mpofu's time was later reinstated, which allowed him to qualify for the 2022 World Athletics Championships where he set a new Zimbabwean record for the marathon, but he was still required to forfeit the 50,000 ZAR that he would have won in Durban had he worn two bibs during the race. The Comrades Marathon is an ultramarathon of approximately 88 kilometres (55 mi) which is run annually in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. It is the world's largest and oldest ultramarathon race. The direction of the race alternates each year between the "up" run (87.6km) starting from Durban and the "down" run (87.7km) starting from Pietermaritzburg.

The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB), previously the Natal Sharks Board and Natal Anti-Shark Measures Board is an organisation that maintains a "shark control" program off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa, at 37 places. Sihle Zikalala is a South African politician from KwaZulu-Natal who has been the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure and a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2023, representing the African National Congress. Before his redeployment to the national government, he had been the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in KwaZulu-Natal and a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature.
During the 2019 Easter weekend, the coastal city of Durban, South Africa, experienced severe flooding, caused by torrential rain brought on by a steep upper air trough, which deepened into low pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere, and impacted the city and its surrounding areas starting 18 April 2019. The floods resulted in at least 70 deaths caused by collapsed buildings, mudslides and sinkholes. It was one of the deadliest disasters to hit the country in the 2010s.

The 2023 World Athletics Label Road Races are road running competitions scheduled for 2023 that have met a certain standard for World Athletics to include the race in its Label Road Races program. The list of races so labelled for the 2023 calendar year was released on 4 November 2022. The list contained 238 races, nearly 20 more than in 2022, and included 14 Platinum Label, 38 Gold Label, 66 Elite Label, and 120 Label races. World Athletics stated that the additional funding afforded by the Label Road Races program would allow the Athletics Integrity Unit to improve the system it uses to detect drug use in competitions.
The 2023 Berlin Marathon is the 49th edition of the annual marathon race in Berlin, scheduled to be held on Sunday, 24 September 2023. A Platinum Label marathon, it is the fourth of six World Marathon Majors events scheduled for 2023. More than 45,000 runners from around 150 countries are expected to take part in the event.
