Eat Bulaga! Indonesia is an Indonesian variety show produced by Philippine television production company Television and Production Exponents, Inc. and now produced by TVJ Productions, Inc., which is aired by SCTV Network in Indonesia. It is the Indonesian franchise of Philippines' longest-running noon-time variety show, Eat Bulaga! . Its first episode premiered on July 16, 2012 and ended on April 3, 2014. [1] [2]

History

Malou Choa-Fagar, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Television and Production Exponents Inc. (TAPE), revealed that SCTV first approached them.

Harsiwi Achmad, program director, had been watching the show on YouTube before she moved to SCTV. Achmad felt that the program was entertaining and educational, and that it can spread positive values and get close with the community. Feeling that it would work well with Indonesian audience, Achmad contacted TAPE's marketing creative service advisor, Gerry C. Guzman, who became a way for the SCTV and Filipino executives to negotiate. Kebon Jeruk, director of programs and production at Studio Penta SCTV, also became interested, saying that he wants the program to be as successful as the original. [3] The situation had initially shocked and surprised Filipino television executives. The SCTV executives then went to the Philippines to spend time watch the show and getting a chance to see how it works.

Surya Utama, known by his stage name "Uya Kuya" (literally "Boss Uya", counterpart to Eat Bulaga!'s "Bossing Vic"), a magician and comedian from Bandung, would become the show's main host. His wife, Astrid Khairunnisha, also known by "Astrid Kuya" also co-hosted the show.

The show began simply as Eat Bulaga! Indonesia, retaining much of the original segments and games played on the Philippine TV show, and premiered on SCTV on July 16, 2012. On July 21, 2012, Filipino viewers got a glimpse of the show's opening performance, while the hosts in the Philippines simultaneously performed the beginning to the show. [4]

Throughout its first year, the show kept in close touch with its original Philippine counterpart. The hosts made many occasional trips to the Philippines to perform with the hosts of the original show, including a segment where the Indonesian hosts teamed up with their Filipino counterparts to participate in a special segment of "Pinoy Henyo: International Version". On December 17, 2012, Filipino singer Christian Bautista made a guest appearance on the show. That same day, Uya Kuya also announced that the show would be airing five days a week instead of three, due to positive feedback and requests from fans. In January 2013, Leo Consul, a Filipino host of the Indonesian show at the time, visited his homeland to perform in front of the Filipino fans, before leaving the show later in the year for undisclosed reasons. Consul's departure from the show triggered an emotional response from the other hosts where Bianca Liza, one of the co-hosts at the time, was seen in tears on-stage. Despite this, Consul's rise to being a host of Eat Bulaga! Indonesia became a legacy and popular story in the Philippines.

The show grew popular in Indonesia, making it through one year as the leading TV show on its time slot. Eat Bulaga! Indonesia celebrated its first anniversary at the Indoor Tennis Stadium in Jakarta. [5] The celebration featured a guest appearance by Dahlan Iskan, at the time, Indonesia's minister for state-owned enterprises. Iskan participated on the Indonesia Pintar segment. Various bands and pop groups also performed at the anniversary. The Philippine hosts of the original program also threw a mini-celebration of their own to congratulate the milestone of their Indonesian counterpart.

Unfortunately, the show's success would be short-lived. Uya Kuya left the show amid its final days, causing the show's ratings to drop drastically. Thus, this would lead to the show's cancellation on April 3, 2014 and was replaced by FTV Sore.

Schedule

The first incarnation of Eat Bulaga! Indonesia aired at 2:30 pm (WIB) or 3:30 pm (PST), a deviation from the original which is broadcast at noon. This was done to consider the viewers' prayer time ( salat ) according to Islam. The first season was set for 13 weeks, as a trial period. [6] [7] [8] [9]

The New Eat Bulaga! Indonesia is a variety and game show In Indonesia produced by Television and Production Exponents (TAPE) Inc. and now produced by TVJ Productions Inc., and aired by antv Network. It is based on the Philippines' longest-running noon-time variety show, Eat Bulaga!, which made it the first Philippine TV variety show to be franchised in another country. Its first incarnation, Eat Bulaga! Indonesia, premiered on July 16, 2012, and ended on April 3, 2014, which aired on its original network SCTV. The show returned on its second network, antv from November 17, 2014, to August 8, 2016, and returned from January 30, 2023, to February 17, 2023, with a mix of original and new hosts.

Kalyeserye was a soap opera parody segment that was aired live on the Filipino noontime variety show Eat Bulaga! on GMA Network. The show-within-a-show, as it had evolved, focused on AlDub, the fictional couple pairing of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza's "Yaya Dub" character in which the two only communicate through lip-syncing to various pop songs and movie audio clips as well as written messages, and interact only on the show's split-screen frame. Richards is usually based in Broadway Centrum studio of Eat Bulaga! in Quezon City, Metro Manila while Mendoza travels around to a different external location.

Pabebe wave is a term coined by the Philippine media to describe a gesture where a person imitates the waving movement done by beauty contestants in the Miss Universe pageant. It was popularized by AlDub in the "Juan For All, All for Juan" segment of the Philippine noontime show Eat Bulaga! A deviation from a beauty-queen wave gesture, it was exchanged between Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza after its initiation by the latter's character, Yaya Dub. Now popular among Filipinos, it also caught the attention of the world through several media platforms. The gesture is similar to an earlier British gesture – the royal wave, used to mock the waving of the royal family.

That's My Bae was a Filipino dance group formed in the That's My Bae: "Twerk It" Dance Contest segment of the noontime variety show Eat Bulaga!, and officially debuted on August 24, 2015, and officially disbanded in May 2019. The group is composed of six members: Kim Last, Kenneth Medrano, Joel Palencia, Tommy Peñaflor, Jon Timmons and Miggy Tolentino. Originally, it was a seven-piece group.

In the Philippines, variety television shows have become mainstays of the noontime slot for network programming since 1958. The first Philippines noontime variety television shows were influenced by the popularity of bodabil (vaudeville) in the first half of the 20th century. Since then, the format has evolved with the changing times, with elements of reality television also incorporated as well since the 2000s. Majority of the noontime variety shows that aired on television were produced independently by blocktimers that pay a certain amount of time to television networks to air their program. Some TV networks though have managed to solely produce these kind of programs, with moderate success in terms of ratings and advertising revenues.

Nathaniel Augustin Cruz, more popularly known as Mang Tani, is a Filipino meteorologist who formerly served as a meteorologist for PAGASA from 1982 to 2010. Cruz is also the former resident meteorologist of GMA Integrated News and a co-host of the network's morning show, Unang Hirit, from 2012 to 2022.
