Eduardas Vaitkus (born 3 October 1956) is a Lithuanian retired doctor,professor and politician. [1] He ran an independent campaign in the 2024 Lithuanian presidential election and subsequently led the Lithuanian People's Party ticket in 2024 parliamentary election.
Vaitkus was born in Kaunas on 3 October 1956. He graduated from the Kaunas Institute of Medicine (now a part of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences) in 1979 and worked in the Kaunas branch of the Institute of Endocrinology and Hormone Chemistry of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences from 1980 to 1983. [2] He has been teaching at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (until 2010 –at its predecessors) since 1983,and has been a professor of the hematology clinic since 2002. [3]
Since 1983,he worked as a doctor in the Kaunas Clinical Hospital (formerly the Kaunas Red Cross Hospital). He resign from his positions in 2018,after 35 years. In 2011,he was accused by the hospital's temporary director Kęstutis Mazurkevičius of installing a covert listening device in his office. [4] He further worked at Kardiolitos clinics between 2016 and 2020. [3]
From 2005 to 2006,he was an advisor to Minister of Health Žilvinas Padaiga,who represented the Labour Party in the Brazauskas Cabinet II. [3] He has authored over 40 scientific articles and has been awarded the Cross of Officer of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas. [2]
He is married to Asta,a doctor of medicine and rheumatologist,and has three children:Nora,Andrius and Domonykas. [3]
Vaitkus has run for election to the Seimas two times,with the Labour Party in the 2008 parliamentary election, [5] and with the Way of Courage in the 2020 parliamentary election, [6] both times unsuccessfully.
Since 2021,he has actively campaigned against vaccination and participated in numerous protests.[ citation needed ] On 18 September 2021,speaking in a protest organized by Astra GenovaitėAstrauskaitė in Vilnius,he stated that "vaccinating children is a crime. The ratio of benefit to harm is not entirely clear and it is more likely that the harm is greater". [7]
In July 2021,he established the Centre of the Lithuanian People's Resistance to Occupation (Lithuanian :Lietuvos gyventojųpasipriešinimo okupacijai centras),a political group unifying several anti-establishment and pro-Russian figures,and was one of the founders of Dawn of Justice,an unregistered party led by Algirdas Paleckis. [8] His political group claims that the Government of Lithuania has violated the constitution and has established a dictatorship,and calls for the establishment of a special counsel system,referendum on membership in NATO and the European Union,etc. [9]
He has called to deport Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya to Belarus,described the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a proxy war instigated by the United States and stated that Lithuania joined the European Union "in a fraudulent manner". [1] He has been accused of pro-Russian views by other anti-establishment and Eurosceptic leaders,such as Nida Vasiliauskaitė,who claimed that he intends to "turn Lithuania into a Russian protectorate". [10] [ unreliable source? ] He claimed that Lithuania could leave NATO "in a single year" and that doing so would leave Lithuania safer. He claimed that he would begin separate negotiations with Russia about prevention of conflicts in Europe if elected President. [11]
On 6 September 2023,he announced his run for President of Lithuania,stating that he intends to establish a "dictatorship of law" and unveil agents of foreign intelligence services in the Lithuanian government. [12] On 26 March 2024,the Central Election Commission of Lithuania announced that it will not print Vaitkus' election program in the election information handbook,as several of its statements,such as disparaging claims towards Ukrainians in Lithuania and NATO,violated the Election Code. [13] After a court order annulled their decision,the commission agreed to print an edited version of the program. [14]
In 2024,he unsuccessfully led the Lithuanian People's Party ticket in 2024 parliamentary election. [15]
Vaitkus expressed nostalgic views towards the Cold War period due to a perceived balance of safety and security between the world superpowers. According to him in 2024,now we are living closer to world's destruction then during the Cuban Missile Crisis. [16]
Vaitkus holds many controversial and factually inaccurate views. In multiple media interviews,Vaitkus has claimed that Lithuania never joined European Union,disregarding Lithuania's EU referendum and Lithuania's accession process that took almost a decade. [17] He has also claimed,without providing any evidence,that United Kingdom threatened to launch a nuclear attack on Russia in the autumn of 2021. [18]
Vaitkus has also claimed,without providing evidence,that Lithuanian presidents Dalia Grybauskaitė and Gitanas Nausėda were trying to start a war with Russia. [19] More than two years into Russian invasion of Ukraine,he claimed that the war was started by western countries and that Russian President Vladimir Putin does what any leader should do. [20] Vaitkus has also claimed that 5G networks are a beginning to the procurement of mind-controlling technology. [21]
Vytautas Šustauskas was a controversial Lithuanian politician who was leader of the Lithuanian Liberty Union and Union of the Fighters for Lithuania political parties. A self-styled "king of the beggars",he was elected Mayor of Kaunas in 2000 and became a member of the Seimas in the same year. He was known for protests against poverty,inequality,membership in the European Union and NATO,and pride parades.
The talonas was a temporary currency issued in Lithuania between 1991 and 1993. It replaced the Soviet ruble at par and was replaced by the litas at a rate of 100 talonai = 1 litas. The talonas was only issued as paper money.
The People and Justice Union is a right-wing populist political party in Lithuania. It is currently not represented in the Seimas. The chairman of the party is Petras Gražulis. Gražulis was impeached from the Lithuanian parliament in late 2023 and is not allowed,until 2033,to participate in any national elections.
Presidential elections were held in Lithuania in December 1997 and January 1998. Artūras Paulauskas finished first in the first round on 21 December 1997 with a significant margin,with Valdas Adamkus finishing second,but neither received a majority of the vote. Adamkus defeated Paulauskas in the runoff,held on 4 January 1998. With a vote difference of 0.74%,it is the closest result in the history of presidential elections in Lithuania since 1993.
The Lithuanian People's Party is a minor pro-Russian political party in Lithuania. It describes itself as left-of-centre. It was founded in 2010 as a split from the Lithuanian Peasant Popular Union,and was led by the party's former chairman and the first prime minister of independent Lithuania,Kazimira Prunskienė. It has no representatives on the European,national or municipal level.
Remigijus Žemaitaitis is a Lithuanian right-wing politician and member of the Seimas,known for his antisemitic statements. He is the founder and leader of the political party Dawn of Nemunas.
The 2024 Lithuanian parliamentary election was held on 13 and 27 October 2024 to elect the 141 members of the Seimas. Parliament members were elected in 71 single-member constituencies using the two-round system,and the remaining 70 in a single nationwide constituency using proportional representation. The first round was held on 13 October and the second round on 27 October.
Ignas Vėgėlė is a Lithuanian lawyer and right-wing politician who served as president of the Lithuanian Bar Association from 2014 to 2022,as well as president of the Lithuanian Lawyers' Association from 2013 to 2016. He was a member of the right-wing Christian conservative Lithuanian Christian Democrats from 1994 and served as the party's deputy chairman of the board from 2002 to 2004,and as interim chairman of the board from 2004 to 2006. Upon the party's merger with the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats,he became an independent politician.
The Union of the Fighters for Lithuania,previously known as the Union for the President of Lithuania was a minor political party in Lithuania of an eclectic far-right political orientation which was founded in 2011. It replaced the Lithuanian Liberty Union. It did not achieve any notable electoral results and was liquidated by the Central Electoral Commission in 2022 for failing to provide a list of members.
Presidential elections were held in Lithuania on 12 May 2024,alongside a referendum on allowing multiple citizenships. Incumbent President Gitanas Nausėda won re-election to a second term. When candidate registrations closed before the election,the Lithuanian Central Election Commission had confirmed fifteen viable registrations;of those,twelve proceeded to collect signatures from the minimum 20,000 voters. In June 2024,the party gained representation in the Seimas after three MPs joined;one formerly of the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union and two formerly of the Labour Party.

Artūras Orlauskas is a Lithuanian comedian,actor,politician,one of the leaders of the Lithuanian Family Movement,and water polo player. He is the leader of the electoral list of the People and Justice Union in the 2024 Lithuanian parliamentary election.

Vaitkus pripažino, kad laimėjęs rinkimus ir gavęs kvietimą į Kremlių mielai ten nuvažiuotų, tačiau visų pirma apsilankytų Vengrijoje. „Su mielu noru nuvažiuočiau ir su Rusija taip pat lygiateisiais pagrindais padiskutuotume, ką galima padaryti dėl saugumo visoje Europoje. Ir kad ta beprotybė Ukrainos teritorijoje būtų nutraukta", – teigė kandidatas į LR prezidentus E. Vaitkus.
