Sogn og Fjordane was,up to 1 January 2020,a county in western Norway,when it was merged to become part of Vestland county. Bordering previous counties Møre og Romsdal,Oppland,Buskerud,and Hordaland,the county administration was in the village of Hermansverk in Leikanger municipality. The largest town in the county was Førde.

Borgund is a former municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county,Norway. It was located in the southeastern part of the traditional district of Sogn. The 635-square-kilometre (245 sq mi) municipality existed from 1864 until its dissolution in 1964. It encompassed an area in the eastern part of the present-day Lærdal Municipality. The administrative center of Borgund was the village of Steinklepp,just northeast of the village of Borgund. Steinklepp was the site of a store,a bank,and a school. The historical Filefjell Kongevegen road passes through the Borgund area.

Kyrkjebø is a former municipality in the old Sogn og Fjordane county,Norway. The 681-square-kilometre (263 sq mi) municipality existed from 1858 until 1964 when it became part of the new municipality of Høyanger which still exists and is part of the new Vestland county. Prior to its dissolution,the municipality of Kyrkjebøincluded land on the north and south side of the Sognefjorden. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Kyrkjebø,where the main KyrkjebøChurch is located.
Lavik is a former municipality in the old county of Sogn og Fjordane,Norway. It was located in the western part of the present-day municipality of Høyanger which is in Vestland county. The municipality was mostly on the northern side of the Sognefjorden. A small part of Lavik was located on the southern side of the Sognefjorden,a narrow strip of land running south around the Ikjefjorden,past the village of Øystrebø,all the way south to the border with Hordaland county. The municipality of Lavik existed from 1838 until 1861 and then again from 1905 until 1964. Upon its dissolution,the municipality was 220 square kilometres (85 sq mi). The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Lavik where Lavik Church is located.
Borgund is a former municipality in Møre og Romsdal county,Norway. The municipality existed from 1837 until 1968 when it was merged into Ålesund Municipality. Borgund originally encompassed the large area north of the Storfjorden and south of the Grytafjorden,from the mainland areas of today's Skodje Municipality in the east to the islands of today's Giske Municipality and the ocean in the west. The city of Ålesund was located in the central part of Borgund,however,was not part of Borgund,and it was governed separately. At its dissolution in 1968,the 172.93-square-kilometre (66.77 sq mi) municipality included the islands of Sula,Humla,Tørla,and Ellingsøya,as well as parts of Oksenøya,Hessa,and Nørvøya,plus many minor islands throughout the area. The main church for the municipality was Borgund Church,located at Borgund. The administrative centre of the municipality was at Borgund,near the church,along the Nørvasundet strait.
Ålesund,sometimes spelled Aalesund in English,is a municipality in Møre og Romsdal County,Norway. It is part of the traditional district of Sunnmøre and the centre of the Ålesund Region. The town of Ålesund is the administrative centre of Ålesund Municipality,as well as the principal shipping town of the Sunnmøre district. The town is a sea port and is noted for its concentration of Art Nouveau architecture. Although sometimes internationally spelled by its older name Aalesund,this spelling is obsolete in Norwegian. However,the local football club Aalesunds FK still carries that spelling,having been founded before the official change.

Dagfinn Flem was a Norwegian politician,newspaper editor,non-fiction writer and translator. He was born in Borgund,a son of Ivar Flem and Nikoline Landmark,and a brother of Magne Flem. He edited the newspaper Sunnmørsposten from 1946,along with his brother. He was mayor of Ålesund for the Liberal Party from 1958 to 1965.

The Sunnmøre Practical Agricultural Society (Norwegian:Syndmøre practiske Landhuusholdningsselskab was a patriotic and non-profit association with the goal of developing business and agriculture in Norway's Sunnmøre district. The society was established on November 2,1773 by Melchior Falch in the village of Borgund. Falch and the priest Hans Strøm supported the initiative. The founding meeting was also attended by other officials and leading people at Sunnmøre,and several others joined later.
