Karl Jahrel Eldrew Poquiz Yulo (born 2008) is a Filipino artistic gymnast. He is the current junior Asian champion in vault, and is a silver medalist in the same apparatus in 2023.

Early life

Yulo was born on August 29, 2008 in Manila, Philippines to a family of gymnasts. His older brother, Carlos, is a two-time World and Olympic champion. His sister Elaiza, the youngest among the siblings, is also an artistic gymnast. [1]

Junior gymnastics career

Yulo competed at the 2023 Asian Junior Artistic Gymnastics Championship in Singapore, which marked his international competition debut. He advanced to the finals in two apparatus— vault and floor exercise. He won the silver in vault, behind Wang Chengcheng of China. [2] [3] [4]

In 2024, Yulo improved his silver in vault to a gold at the 2024 Junior Asian Championships. [5] [6] In April of the same year, he competed at the junior division of the 2024 Pacific Rim Championships. He finished second and won the silver medal in the All-Around. He won the golds in floor exercise and vault, and the silvers Pommel and Rings. In the Parallel Bars and High Bars, he finished at 6th. [7] [8]

As a junior gymnast, he also competes at the Palarong Pambansa, representing the National Capital Region. At the 2023 Palaro, Yulo won the gold at the All-Around, and at all six events in the secondary boys’ artistic gymnastics category. [9]

Carlos Edriel Poquiz Yulo is a Filipino artistic gymnast. He is the 2024 Olympic gold medalist at the floor exercise and vault events. He is the first Filipino and the first male Southeast Asian gymnast to medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships with his floor exercise bronze medal finish in 2018, as well as the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to achieve a gold medal finish for the same criteria in 2019 at the same event. With multiple medals on the international stage, Yulo is the second person to win an Olympic gold medal for the Philippines, the first person to win multiple Olympic gold medals for the country, and the first Southeast Asian athlete to win multiple gold medals at the Olympic Games.

He was also the first Dominican gymnast to win a gold medal at an FIG World Cup event when he won the vault title at the 2017 Osijek World Challenge Cup. He is the 2017 Pan American vault and horizontal bar champion and the 2017 Universiade vault champion. He is also the 2018 and 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games vault champion. He has qualified to represent the Dominican Republic at the 2024 Summer Olympics, the first male gymnast from his country to do so.
