Since independence, Indonesian foreign relations have adhered to a "free and active" foreign policy, seeking to play a role in regional affairs commensurate with its size and location but avoiding involvement in conflicts among major powers. During the Presidency of Sukarno, Indonesia's Foreign Relations were marked by engagement with other newly independent nations in Asia and Africa, as exemplified by the Bandung Conference, the subsequent foundation of the Non-Aligned Movement and a confrontational attitude towards Western powers, justified by a belief in the CONEFO and opposition to what Sukarno termed as NEKOLIM.
A chancery is the principal office that houses a diplomatic mission or an embassy. This often includes the associated building and the site. The building can house one or several different nations' missions. The term derives from chancery or chancellery, the office of a chancellor. Some nations title the head of foreign affairs a chancellor, and 'chancery' eventually became a common referent to the main building of an embassy.

The first Indonesian overseas mission in Bangkok was opened as the Indonesian Office (INDOFF) in 1947, which was promoted to Legation in 1949, and later Embassy in 1956.

The Embassy of Indonesia, Warsaw is the diplomatic mission of the Republic of Indonesia to the Republic of Poland. The current ambassador is Anita Lidya Luhulima who was appointed by President Joko Widodo on 17 November 2021.

The embassy is located outside the Vatican City territory in the Italian capital of Rome. The mission is currently headed by Ambassador Laurentius Amrih Jinangkung which was sworn in by President Joko Widodo on 14 September 2020.
