Emma Woods (born December 18, 1995) is a Canadian ice hockey forward for Toronto of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). She was selected 81st overall, in the 14th round of the 2023 PWHL draft by New York.
Growing up in Burford, Ontario, Woods played with the boys' Burford Coyotes until the bantam level, often the only girl on the team. [1] In 2011, Woods was recognised with the Phyllis Gretzky Memorial Award for Female Youth Leadership from the Brantford Sports Council.
Woods played four seasons of NCAA Division I ice hockey with the Quinnipiac Bobcats women's ice hockey program of Quinnipiac University in the ECAC Hockey conference. As a sophomore, she was named to the ECAC All-Academic team and, as a junior, she served as an alternate captain and was named to the All-ECAC Third Team. She served as team captain during her senior season. [2]
In 2016, she was drafted in the fourth round, 14th overall by the Buffalo Beauts of the NWHL. [3] In the 2017 CWHL Draft, she was selected in the seventh round, 49th overall by the Vanke Rays, one of two new Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) expansion teams in China. Woods opted to sign with the Vanke Rays for the 2017–18 CWHL season. [4] She remained with the franchise as it merged with the other CWHL team in China, Kunlun Red Star, to become the Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays for the 2018–19 CWHL season.
In the 2019–20 season, Woods played with Leksands IF of the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL). [5] She tallied 29 points in 35 games – tied with fellow-Canadian Brooke Boquist for second-most on the team. [6]
In June 2020, it was announced that Woods had joined the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) expansion team, the Toronto Six, making her the seventh player to sign with the organization. The Toronto Six roster included four teammates from Woods' time with the Qunnipiac Bobcats – Kelly Babstock, Sarah-Ève Coutu-Godbout, Shiann Darkangelo, and Emma Greco – in addition to Vanke Rays teammate Elaine Chuli and Leksands IF teammate Brooke Boquist. The leadership for the inaugural season included Woods, who served as one of the alternate captains with Emma Greco, while Shiann Darkangelo appointed as the first team captain in franchise history. [9] She and Shiann Darkangelo assisted on the first goal scored in Toronto Six franchise history. [10] Scored by Lindsay Eastwood, the goal took place in the second game of the 2020–21 NWHL season and was scored against Minnesota Whitecaps goaltender Amanda Leveille. [11]
Woods re-signed with the Toronto Six for the 2023–24 season on June 26, 2023. [12] The Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) was bought out and dissolved three days later, on June 29, 2023, and her contract was voided. [13] Woods subsequently declared her eligibility for the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL), the league which replaced the PHF. She was selected in the fourteenth round, 81st overall by New York in the inaugural PWHL draft on September 18, 2023. [14] [15] Over the course of the season, she would score two goals and five points as New York's second line center. [16]
On June 21, 2024, the opening day of free agency for the 2024–25 season, Woods signed a two-year contract with Toronto. [16]
Woods was born December 18, 1995, in London, Ontario. She grew up in Burford, Ontario, with her older sister, Rebecca, twin brother Calvin, and younger brother, Hayden.
She attended Paris District High School for her secondary education, where she participated in varsity ice hockey, volleyball, junior basketball, soccer, tennis, track and field, badminton, and baseball. During her high school career, she won county-level championships in badminton, tennis, and baseball, [lower-alpha 1] won the regional championship in tennis, [lower-alpha 2] and competed at the provincial-level for ice hockey and tennis. [lower-alpha 3] Woods was three-time MVP of the ice hockey team and twice served as team captain. She was named the Paris District Senior Female Athlete of the Year in 2013. [17]

The Canadian Women's Hockey League was a women's ice hockey league. Established in 2007 as a Canadian women's senior league in the Greater Toronto Area, Montreal, and Ottawa, the league expanded into Alberta (2011) and internationally in the United States (2010) and China (2017) throughout its tenure. The league discontinued operations on May 1, 2019, after 12 seasons.

The Boston Pride were a professional women's ice hockey team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They were one of the four charter franchises of the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF). The Pride played at Warrior Ice Arena, which is also the practice facility for the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. The Pride won the inaugural Isobel Cup in 2016 and became the first professional women's ice hockey team to win three championship titles when they claimed consecutive victories in 2021 and 2022.
The Connecticut Whale were a professional ice hockey team based in the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF). They played in Simsbury, Connecticut at the International Skating Center of Connecticut. The team was established in 2015 as one of the four charter franchises of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL), which became the PHF in 2021. Their name and colors paid homage to the Hartford Whalers, a former NHL and WHA franchise based in Connecticut. The team folded along with the PHF in 2023 as part of the creation of a new, unified women's league, the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL).
Kelly Babstock is a Canadian-American ice hockey player, currently playing in the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) with PWHL Boston. She has Ojibwe roots and is originally from Little Current on Manitoulin Island, part of the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory.
Shiann Darkangelo is an American professional ice hockey player for PWHL Ottawa of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). She has played at the international level with Team USA and won gold at the 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship with the team. At the NCAA Division I level, she accumulated 42 points with the Syracuse Orange women's ice hockey program during the 2011–12 and 2012–13 seasons and registered 60 points with the Quinnipiac Bobcats women's ice hockey program during the 2013–14 and 2014–15 seasons. She was team captain of the Toronto Six roster that won the 2023 Isobel Cup championship.
Kaleigh Fratkin is a Canadian professional ice hockey player for PWHL Boston of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). The second-longest tenured player and leading scorer among defenders in PHF history, she was the first Canadian player to sign a contract in the league, is a five-time PHF all-star, and is a two-time PHF Defender of the Year in 2020 and 2021. She was also a member of the Boston Pride roster that captured the 2021 and 2022 Isobel Cup, and was one of three 2023 PHF All-Star captains. Previous to the joining the NWHL, she won the Clarkson Cup in 2015 and was the first girl to play boys' midget AAA hockey in British Columbia.

The 2015–16 Quinnipiac Bobcats women's ice hockey season was the 15th season of play for the Quinnipiac Bobcats program. They represented Quinnipiac University during the 2015-16 NCAA Division I women's ice hockey season and played their home games at TD Bank Sports Center. They won the ECAC Hockey tournament championship for the first time in program history.
HC Shenzhen Kunlun Red Star, abbreviated Shenzhen KRS, is an ice hockey team in the Chinese Women's Ice Hockey League (WCIHL). They play in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China at Shenzhen Dayun Arena.

The Toronto Six were a professional women's ice hockey team in Toronto, Ontario, playing out of Canlan Ice Sports – York. They were one of two Canadian teams in the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) along with the Montreal Force, and the first expansion team to join the league since the collapse of the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) in 2019. The team was founded in 2020 with their inaugural regular season held in Lake Placid, New York, followed by the Isobel Cup playoffs in Brighton, Massachusetts.

The collapse of the Canadian Women's Hockey League occurred in the spring of 2019. Previously one of the top women's ice hockey leagues in the world, the Canadian Women's Hockey League announced on 31 March 2019, that it would be folding effective 1 May.
