From 2007 to 2011,the International Institute for Strategic Studies estimated the UPDF had a total strength of 40,000–45,000,consisting of land forces and an air wing. Recruitment to the forces is done annually.

Mustafa Adrisi Abataki was a Ugandan military officer who served as the third vice president of Uganda from 1977 to 1979 and was one of President Idi Amin's closest associates. In 1978,after Adrisi was injured in a suspicious auto accident,troops loyal to him mutinied. Amin sent troops against the mutineers,some of whom had fled across the Tanzanian border,possibly contributing to the Uganda–Tanzania War. As the Ugandan war effort collapsed,Adrisi fled to Sudan where he claimed to retain the post of Vice President. He became briefly involved in the rebel activities of the Uganda National Rescue Front before returning from exile in 1987. He struggled with health problems in his later life and died in 2013.

Joshua Wanume Kibedi was an Ugandan lawyer,politician and diplomat,who served as the Foreign Minister between January 1971 and January 1973 during the early years of the regime of Idi Amin. However,Kibedi resigned as Foreign Minister in 1973 after the murder of his uncle,Shaban Nkutu,by Amin. Kibedi went into exile and became a leading critic of Idi Amin's dictatorship. He would later serve as Uganda's Ambassador to the United Nations from 1986 to 1988.
Basil Kiiza Bataringaya was a prominent Ugandan politician in post-independence Uganda. He was the Leader of the Opposition at the beginning of the Apollo Milton Obote government,and then he changed parties and was appointed to the powerful role of Ugandan Minister of Internal Affairs. He was imprisoned,tortured,and was one of the first political prisoners to be executed by the Idi Amin regime.
Juma Ali Oka Rokoni,commonly referred to as Juma Butabika,was a Ugandan military officer who served as Uganda Army (UA) top commander during the dictatorship of Idi Amin. Despite being notorious for his erratic behavior and abuse of power,he was highly influential,held important army commands,and served as long-time chairman of the Ugandan Military Tribunal,a military court used by Amin to try and eliminate political dissidents and rivals. By commanding an unauthorised attack on Tanzania in October 1978,Butabika was responsible for the outbreak of the Uganda–Tanzania War which ultimately resulted in his death in combat,probably during or shortly before the Fall of Kampala.

Isaac Maliyamungu,also known as Isaac Lugonzo,was a Ugandan military officer who served as one of President Idi Amin's most important officials and supporters during the Ugandan military dictatorship of 1971–79. Born in the Congo,Maliyamungu was one of the members of the 1971 coup that brought Amin to power,and was thereafter responsible for brutally suppressing dissidents throughout the country. Rising in the ranks,Maliyamungu amassed great power and earned a feared reputation. He was responsible for the mass murder of civilians and soldiers suspected of being disloyal to Amin.
The Battle of Jinja was a battle of the Uganda–Tanzania War that took place on 22 April 1979 near and in the city of Jinja,Uganda between Tanzanian and allied Uganda National Liberation Front forces,and Ugandan troops loyal to Idi Amin. The Tanzanians and the UNLF men met slight resistance and captured Owen Falls Dam and the town of Jinja.
Andrew Joet Mukooza was a Ugandan military officer who served as the last head of the Uganda Army Air Force before its destruction during the Uganda–Tanzania War of 1978–79. Born in eastern Uganda,Mukooza joined the air force during the presidency of Milton Obote. In 1971,army commander Idi Amin assumed power in Uganda. Mukooza stayed firmly loyal to Amin's regime,and consequently rose in the ranks. He possibly helped Amin to defeat a coup attempt in 1977,drawing the ire of Uganda's opposition. When the Uganda–Tanzania War broke out,Mukooza initially flew missions as fighter pilot and became head of the Uganda Army Air Force when the latter began to disintegrate amid combat losses,defections,and desertions. Following the defeat of Amin,Mukooza surrendered to the new Tanzanian-backed government of Uganda,but was murdered under uncertain circumstances.

Dusman Abassi Sabuni was a Ugandan military officer. Born in Lira,Uganda,he became an officer in the Uganda Army following the completion of his secondary schooling. After Colonel Idi Amin's 1971 military coup,Sabuni quickly rose through the ranks and was made brigadier general and Minister of Industry. Sabuni fled the country in 1979 after Amin's overthrow during the Uganda–Tanzania War,but was detained by Kenyan authorities and sent back to Uganda. Sources disagree on the details of his later life,though it is known that he served as important rebel leader in the 1990s.
Bernard Rwehururu was a Ugandan military officer and author. He served in various Ugandan militaries from 1965 until 2013,including under the governments of Milton Obote,Idi Amin,Tito Okello,and Yoweri Museveni.
