Erwin Schwab (born 1964) is a German amateur astronomer and discoverer of minor planets, who works at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, near Darmstadt, Germany. [2] [3] [4] He has discovered and co-discovered more than 80 asteroids [1] from the Starkenburg ( 611 ), Tzec Maun ( D25 ) and Taunus observatories ( B01 ). As volunteer scientist for the European Space Agency (ESA) he recovered near-Earth objects and comets. [5] [6] [7] From 2014 to 2021 he recovered 30 lost comets, which equates to about 25% of the worldwide proportion in that timespan. [8] [9] Using the Schmidt telescope at Calar Alto Observatory ( Z84 ) to search for a lost comet he discovered in 2019 a unique variable star – the first known eclipsing stream-fed intermediate polar, cataloged as J1832.4-1627 (VSX-Id of AAVSO: 000-BNG-512) [10] [11] [12] [13]
Schwab was born in Heppenheim, [3] [14] where he started observing minor planets at the Starkenburg Observatory in 1981. [15]
The Observatorio Astronómico de La Sagra in Spain has named the main-belt asteroid 185638 Erwinschwab in his honour. [2] [16] [17]
One which he discovered is named after his parents, Elfriede and Erwin Schwab. [18] Schwab has discovered asteroids at Starkenburg, Tzec Maun [19] as well as at the Taunus Observatory. [1] Some minor planet are named for German cities such as 204852 Frankfurt, 241418 Darmstadt, and 243440 Colonia (Cologne), while the Jupiter-trojans 192220 Oicles and 221917 Opites are named after figures from Greek mythology. He also co-discovered 2009 DM45, an unnumbered Apollo asteroid and potentially hazardous object. [20]

An asteroid is a minor planet—an object that is neither a planet nor a comet—that orbits within the inner Solar System. They are rocky, metallic or icy bodies with no atmosphere. Sizes and shapes of asteroids vary significantly, ranging from 1-meter rocks to a dwarf planet almost 1000 km in diameter.
Hermann Mayer Salomon Goldschmidt was a German-French astronomer and painter who spent much of his life in France. He started out as a painter, but after attending a lecture by the famous French astronomer Urbain Le Verrier turned to astronomy. His discovery of the asteroid Lutetia in 1852 was followed by further findings and by 1861 Goldschmidt had discovered 14 asteroids. He received the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1861 for having discovered more asteroids than any other person up to that time. He died from complications of diabetes.
Charles Dillon Perrine was an American astronomer at the Lick Observatory in California (1893-1909) who moved to Cordoba, Argentina to accept the position of Director of the Argentine National Observatory (1909-1936). The Cordoba Observatory under Perrine's direction made the first attempts to prove Einstein's theory of relativity by astronomical observation of the deflection of starlight near the Sun during the solar eclipse of October 10, 1912 in Cristina (Brazil), and the solar eclipse of August 21, 1914 at Feodosia, Crimea, Russian Empire. Rain in 1912 and clouds in 1914 prevented results.
Wolf Bickel is a German amateur astronomer and a prolific discoverer of asteroids, observing at his private Bergisch Gladbach Observatory, Germany. He is the most successful German discoverer of minor planets.
Francesco Manca is an Italian amateur astronomer and discoverer of minor planets at the Sormano Astronomical Observatory in northern Italy.
The Uppsala–DLR Trojan Survey is an astronomical survey to study the movements and locations of asteroids near Jupiter, which includes Jupiter trojans and other asteroids, which line-of sight are frequently blocked by the giant planet.
The Starkenburg Observatory is an astronomical observatory in Heppenheim, Germany. It was founded in 1970, and currently has about 150 members.
Mount Lemmon Survey (MLS) is a part of the Catalina Sky Survey with observatory code G96. MLS uses a 1.52 m (60 in) cassegrain reflector telescope operated by the Steward Observatory at Mount Lemmon Observatory, which is located at 2,791 meters (9,157 ft) in the Santa Catalina Mountains northeast of Tucson, Arizona.
The Astronomical Observatory of Mallorca is an observatory just south of Costitx, Mallorca, Spain.
185638 Erwinschwab, provisional designation 2008 EU7, is a potentially sub-kilometer Nysian asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 1 March 2008, by OAM-astronomers at the La Sagra Observatory in southern Spain. The asteroid is estimated to measure between 950 meters and 1.8 kilometers in diameter and was named after German astronomer Erwin Schwab in 2009.
La Sagra Observatory is an astronomical observatory located in the province of Granada, Spain. It uses four robotic telescopes both designed and built by the scientists of the Observatorio Astronómico de Mallorca (OAM) who operate them remotely by telecontrol daily, discharging data from Mallorca using the Internet, to process them by means of algorithms designed "in house" which helped to detect asteroid 367943 Duende. among the other 1706 asteroids, with a 12th place in the ranking of asteroid discoveries. Its activities include, as part of its La Sagra Sky Survey, tracking small Solar System bodies, particularly near-Earth objects, and space debris.
216433 Milianleo, provisional designation 2009 DM3, is an Aeolia asteroid from the central region of the asteroid belt, approximately 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) in diameter. It was discovered 19 February 2009, by German amateur astronomer Erwin Schwab using a remote-controlled telescope at Tzec Maun Observatory (H10) in Mayhill, New Mexico, United States. The asteroid was named after the discoverer's son, Milian Leo Schwab.
2013 PJ10 is a Near-Earth asteroid that was discovered on 4 August 2013 in Observatorio Astronómico de La Sagra, with an estimated diameter of about 50 meters. At 02.18 GMT, 4 August 2013, this asteroid flew at a minimum distance from the Earth (371.4 thousand kilometers), accounting for 0.96 average radius of the lunar orbit, but until 2180 it will not approach the Earth closer than 3.2 million miles.
Los Molinos Observatory is an astronomical observatory owned by the Ministerio de Educación y Cultura de Uruguay and operated in collaboration with the University of the Republic's Astronomy Department. It is located near the city of Las Piedras, on the outskirts of Montevideo, Uruguay.
The Sormano Astronomical Observatory is an astronomical observatory north of Milan, Italy. Located near the Swiss border at 1000 meters elevation at the mountain village of Sormano in the pre-Alps, the observatory was privately funded by the Gruppo Astrofili Brianza and built in 1986.
Felix Hormuth (born 1975) is a German astronomer, working at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) until 2016, and a prolific discoverer of minor planets. During his stay at the Calar Alto Observatory in Spain, he has discovered many asteroids, including a Jupiter trojan and two near-Earth objects, such as the 15-meter Amor asteroid 2009 DS36, using MPIA's 1.23-meter reflector telescope.
Dmitry Nikolayevich Chestnov is a Russian astronomer, observer and photometrist of comets and discoverer of minor planets. He lives in Saransk, the capital city of the Republic of Mordovia, Russia.
Martin Geffert (1922–2015) was a German amateur astronomer and co-founder of the Starkenburg Observatory in Heppenheim, Germany, where he had been the observatory's treasurer since its beginnings in 1970.
