Etainia is an extinct genus of vicissicaudatan artiopod known from the Ordovician Llanfallteg Formation of Wales. Its type species is Etainia howellsorum. [1] It shares its name with the moth genus Etainia (split off from a different genus earlier in 2015), therefore under Article 23 of the ICZN's code [2] it is a homonym and technically invalid.
Etainia is known only from a partial specimen and an isolated appendage. The head consists of a semicircular sclerite, with no other features such as eyes or antennae preserved. Only a single cephalic appendage is known, composed of at least six podomeres decreasing in relative size towards the appendage tip, with long enditic spines on the first preserved podomere. The paratype (isolated appendage) shows at least seven podomeres (although the boundaries are hard to distinguish), alongside sharing the enditic spines. The trunk is poorly preserved, with only three tergites on the fossil. The second of these has a slight raised margin, suggesting an overlap with the third. In areas where these tergites are not preserved, appendages can be seen matching these tergites. The exopods have bulbous lobes fringed with overlapping lamellae, and these lamellar setae can also be seen in the cephalic region. The exopod is likely bipartite, due to the preservation of median setae further out. This is also evident on an appendage from further back on the body, with an ovoid exopod with evenly distributed setae along its margin. This exopod is attached to a poorly preserved proximal lobe, which is itself attached to a coxal bar giving the entire coxa a lacrimiform appearance. [1]
Etainia somewhat resembles "xenopod" vicissicaudatans in appearance, therefore it is likely a member of the clade. Much like Sidneyia , Etainia bears a long coxal bar and long clusters of spine-like endites on its endopods. Bipartite exopods are a common feature in artiopods, with the rounded proximal lobes and lamellar setae resembling those of Retifacies (although that taxon does not have bipartite exopods). While the aglaspidid-like artiopod Kwanyinaspis also has ovoid exopods, however its distal setae differ in form from those of Etainia. [1]
The genus name Etainia derives from Étaín, a mythical Celtic princess who "was reborn after being transformed into a butterfly and ingested by the wife of Étar", in reference both to the taxon being an arthropod and the large gap between it and other related forms. The species name howellsorum honours William and Sid Howells for "their support and devotion to the study of the geology of SW Wales". [1]
Naraoia is a genus of small to average size marine arthropods within the family Naraoiidae, that lived from the early Cambrian to the late Silurian period. The species are characterized by a large alimentary system and sideways oriented antennas.

Habelia is a genus of extinct arthropod from the Middle Cambrian, thought to be one of the earliest known relatives of chelicerates. Its fossils have been found in the Burgess Shale in British Columbia, Canada. Fifty-four specimens of Habelia are known from the Greater Phyllopod bed, where they comprise 0.1% of the community.
Tuzoia is an extinct genus of large bivalved arthropod known from Early to Middle Cambrian marine environments from what is now North America, Australia, China, Europe and Siberia. The large, domed carapace reached lengths of 180 millimetres (7.1 in), making them amongst the largest known Cambrian arthropods.
Eoredlichia is an extinct genus of trilobite of average to large size. It lived during the early Cambrian in the Chengjiang fauna of Yunnan, China, and in Australia and Thailand. Eoredlichia is compounded of the Greek ἠώς and Redlichia, a later but related genus, so it means "early Redlichia". The species epithet intermedia means intermediate, indicating it is morphologically intermediate between other species. Eofallotaspis gives rise to Lemdadella, and thence to Eoredlichia and the other Redlichiidae.
Kiisortoqia soperi is an extinct species of arthropod from the Early Cambrian Sirius Passet Lagerstätte in Greenland. While it had a superficially trilobite-like bodyform, it also possessed large frontal appendages similar to those of radiodonts.
Pentecopterus is a genus of eurypterid, an extinct group of aquatic arthropods. Fossils have been registered from the Darriwilian age of the Middle Ordovician period, as early as 467.3 million years ago. The genus contains only one species, P. decorahensis, that is the oldest known eurypterid, surpassing other Ordovician eurypterids, such as Brachypterus, in age by almost 9 million years. The generic name derives from the penteconter, a warship from ancient Greece, and the suffix -pterus, which means "wing" and is often used in other genus of eurypterids. The specific name refers to Decorah, Iowa, where Pentecopterus was discovered.
The Artiopoda is a grouping of extinct arthropods that includes trilobites and their close relatives. It was erected by Hou and Bergström in 1997 to encompass a wide diversity of arthropods that would traditionally have been assigned to the Trilobitomorpha. Trilobites, in part due to abundance of findings owing to their mineralized exoskeletons, are by far the best recorded, diverse, and long lived members of the clade. Other members, which lack mineralised exoskeletons, are known mostly from Cambrian deposits.
Heteromysis is a genus of marine mysid crustaceans from the family Mysidae, associated with various shallow-water invertebrates. The name describes differentiation of its pereiopods as possible adaptation to commensal life-style. Heteromysis is one of the largest mysid genera, containing more than 100 species. The genus is distributed globally, but predominantly in tropical and subtropical waters.
Squamacula is an extinct artiopodan arthropod from the Cambrian Series 2. The type species S. clypeata was described in 1997 from the Chengjiang biota of Yunnan, China. At the time of description there were only two known specimens of S. clypeata, but now there are at least six known specimens. In 2012 a second species S. buckorum was described from the Emu Bay Shale of Australia.
Retifacies abnormalis is an extinct arthropod that lived in the lower Cambrian. Its fossil remains have been found in the Maotianshan Shales of Yunnan, China. It is a member of the Artiopoda, and closely related to Pygmaclypeatus.
Cheloniellon is a monotypic genus of cheloniellid arthropod, known only by one species, Cheloniellon calmani, discovered from the Lower Devonian Hunsrück Slate of Germany.
Vicissicaudata is an unranked group of artiopods, containing Cheloniellida, Aglaspidida and several other genera outside these groups like Sidneyia and Emeraldella.
Fortiforceps is an extinct genus of Cambrian megacheiran arthropod known from the Chengjiang biota of Yunnan, China. It was originally described by Hou and Bergström in 1997, and redescribed in 2020. It was relatively small, at 4 centimetres (1.6 in) or less in length. The head had a large pair of stalked eyes, a pair of frontal projections, as well as a pair of great appendages, like other megacheirans, along with two other cephalic appendages. The trunk had either 20 or 22 segments, depending on the specimen. These segments had pronounced blade-like spines on their upper-outer edge. Each of the trunk segments were associated with pairs of biramous limbs, which probably have seven podomeres and like other megacheirans, have paddle-shaped exopods. The trunk terminated with a forked tailpiece, which on their outer edges had rod-like structures. The two lobes were separated by a rectangular central piece. It has been placed as a member of the family Jiangfengiidae, alongside Jianfengia, Sklerolibyon and possibly Parapeytoia.
Surusicaris is an extinct genus of bivalved arthropod, known from the Cambrian Burgess Shale of British Columbia, Canada. It is considered to be closely related to Isoxys, and like it has spined grasping frontal appendages.
Shucaris is a genus of radiodont of uncertain taxonomic placement from the Lower Cambrian Maotianshan Shales in Yunnan, South China. The type and only species is S. ankylosskelos, known from multiple specimens comprising frontal appendages, multiple endites, gnathobase‐like structures, a nearly complete body, a head carapace complex, and one body flap associated with setal blades.
Setapedites is an extinct genus of Ordovician offacolid chelicerates from the Fezouata Formation of Morocco. The genus contains a single species, Setapedites abundantis.
