Eugene Haines Merrill (born September 12,1934) is an American Old Testament scholar who has worked as a distinguished professor of Old Testament studies at Dallas Theological Seminary and 2010 president of the Evangelical Theological Society.
Merrill was born in Anson,Maine. [1] He attended Bob Jones University,where he earned his Bachelor of Arts (1957),Master of Arts in Bible (1960),and PhD in Old Testament interpretation (1963). [2] After moving to New York for his wife to complete her doctorate,Merrill earned an M.A. in Jewish studies at New York University (1970),and his M.Phil. (1976) and Ph.D. (1985) in Middle East languages and culture at Columbia University. He also completed post-doctoral research (1989–1990) at Tyndale House in Cambridge. [3]
Merrill taught at Bob Jones University from 1963 until 1966,then at Berkshire Christian College from 1968 until 1975. [1] He joined the faculty of Dallas Theological Seminary in 1975,and retired in 2013 as Distinguished Professor of Old Testament Studies (Emeritus). [2] He has also served on the faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville,Kentucky,since 2005 as Distinguished Professor of Old Testament Interpretation. He is a member of the American Oriental Society,the Near East Archaeological Society,the Society of Biblical Literature,and he served as president of the Evangelical Theological Society,of which he has been a member since 1965. Merrill has published ten books,contributed to several other collaborative projects,served as a translator in three biblical text projects,and written nearly 200 scholarly articles,mostly for Bibliotheca Sacra . [1] Significant titles include:

Merrill Frederick Unger (1909–1980) was an American Bible commentator,scholar,archaeologist,and theologian. He earned his A.B. and Ph.D. degrees at Johns Hopkins University,and his Th.M and Th.D degrees at Dallas Theological Seminary. He was a prolific writer who authored some 40 books. Unger was also a well known Biblical archaeologist and encyclopedist. Early in his career he was identified as a Baptist,but later was credentialed by the Independent Fundamentalist Churches of America (IFCA).

Wolfgang Max Wilhelm Roth,also known as W. M. W. Roth,was a German pastor of the United Church of Canada and an Old Testament scholar with major contribution to the growth of Old Testament scholarship for more than half a century from 1959 through 2013. Roth was a scholar in the line of Gerhard von Rad acknowledging the influence of the master-specialist of Old Testament ever since his study days at the University of Heidelberg,Germany. Jack Pearl Lewis was an American Bible scholar affiliated with the Churches of Christ. He earned a Ph.D. in New Testament from Harvard University in 1953 and a Ph.D. in Old Testament from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1962. For 50 years,Lewis taught Bible and biblical languages first at Harding University in Searcy,Arkansas,and then at Harding School of Theology in Memphis,Tennessee,where he was named professor emeritus upon his retirement. He authored over 223 articles in scholarly and church publications and published more than twenty-five books. He died in Memphis,Tennessee,on July 24,2018,at the age of 99.
Willem A. VanGemeren is Professor Emeritus of Old Testament and Semitic Languages at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He is the author of a number of books,including Interpreting the Prophetic Word (Zondervan) and a commentary on Psalms in the Expositor's Bible Commentary series (Zondervan). Leslie J. Hoppe is a Roman Catholic priest and Franciscan Old Testament scholar with a focus on Deuteronomy and Deuteronomic literature and is an expert in biblical studies. He is Carroll Stuhlmueller Distinguished Professor of Old Testament Studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and the general editor of the refereed theological journal Catholic Biblical Quarterly.
