REP(MUS) (Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping using Maritime Uncrewed Systems) is an annual military exercise organized and hosted by the Portuguese Navy and NATO with the participation of forces from foreign military forces, universities and tech companies. The exercise has the objective of testing different types of unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned surface vehicles, unmanned undersea vehicles, and unmanned ground vehicles. Today it is the largest UAV testing exercise, with the participation of several NATO countries. [1] [2]

Objectives

REP(MUS) allows nations to pool their resources, talent and ingenuity to create better, more flexible and more interoperable maritime unmanned vehicles and systems; [3]

REP(MUS)20

The REP(MUS)20 exercise was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and was replaced by two webinars. [15]

REP(MUS)21

In this edition took part 11 ships, 21 Unmanned aerial vehicles, 32 Unmanned underwater vehicles and 12 Unmanned surface vehicles. [16]

In the 2022 edition, there were 45 unmanned aerial vehicles, 40 unmanned underwater vehicles, 18 unmanned surface vehicles, and 17 military vessels present. It was attended by more than 2000 people from 25 countries, many of them from NATO, as well as companies and universities. [32] [33] [34] [35] [36] [37]

The exercise took place in September 2023 and was attended by more than 25 Navies, 8 NATO entities and more than 30 companies and universities dedicated to research and development in this area. [45] [46] [47]

Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1) is one of NATO's standing naval maritime immediate reaction forces. SNMG1 consists of four to six destroyers and frigates. Its role is to provide NATO with an immediate operational response capability.

<i>Vasco da Gama</i>-class frigate

The Vasco da Gama class is a class of frigates of the Portuguese Navy. Named in honor of the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, the ships are based on the German MEKO 200 design, and are Portugal's major surface ships. Portugal operates three ships of this class, which were built in Hamburg by Blohm + Voss (B&V) and by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) in Kiel, using modular construction techniques.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Portuguese Marine Corps</span> Military unit

The Portuguese Marine Corps constitutes the Elite Marine Commandos and the Special Operations Branch of the Portuguese Navy. It has roles similar to the ones of the USMC Reconnaissance Battalions and of the Royal Marine Commandos and the 75th Ranger Regiment The Corps is specialised in air assault, amphibious warfare, anti-tank warfare, coastal reconnaissance and raiding, commando style raids, counterinsurgency, desert warfare, indirect fire support raiding, irregular warfare, ISTAR, jungle warfare, maneuver warfare, maritime interdiction, mountain warfare, providing security at naval base or shore stations, reconnaissance for gathering military intelligence, support special operations, tracking targets, urban warfare, and VBSS operations. It is an Elite Marine Commando Force, operating as a rapid-reaction force. Today's Corpo de Fuzileiros is the premier raid force. The Fuzileiros remains an all-volunteer force with an intensive screening and selection process followed by combat-focused training. Fuzileiros are resourced to maintain exceptional proficiency, experience and readiness.

An unmanned surface vehicle, unmanned surface vessel or uncrewed surface vessel (USV), colloquially called a drone boat, drone ship or sea drone, is a boat or ship that operates on the surface of the water without a crew. USVs operate with various levels of autonomy, from remote control to fully autonomous surface vehicles (ASV).

INESC TEC is a private non-profit association, recognised as a Public Interest Institution and has been an Associate Laboratory since 2002.

Liquid Robotics is an American marine robotics corporation that designs, manufactures and sells the Wave Glider, a wave and solar powered unmanned surface vehicle (USV). The Wave Glider harvests energy from ocean waves for propulsion. With this energy source, Wave Gliders can spend many months at a time at sea, collecting and transmitting ocean data.

ANTEX-M is a family of small- and medium-sized experimental unmanned aerial vehicles developed by the Portuguese Air Force in partnership with several universities and institutes. The development program is part of the PITVANT program and is funded by the Portuguese National Defense Ministry until 2015.

The PAIC Império SP1 is an experimental unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed and manufactured by the Portuguese Aerospace Industry Consortium (PAIC) and Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Sensors to support civilian protection agencies in the wildfire detection and maritime patrol roles.

The JARI USV is an uncrewed surface vehicle developed by the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), specifically between its No. 716 Research Institute, the Jiangsu Automation Research Institute (JARI), and No. 702 Research Institute, China Ship Scientific Research Centre (CSRRC). The uncrewed warship is designed for potential use for the People's Liberation Army Navy and export customers.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">UAVision</span> Portuguese UAV manufacturer

UAVisionAeronautics is a company with more than 18 years of experience in the development of Unmanned aerial vehicles and subsystems. It initially focused on the development and manufacture of autopilots and communication systems. UAvision has provided UAS platforms in four continents operating in the most diverse environments. In addition to an important collaboration with the European Union and the Portuguese Armed Forces, the company is present in international markets, namely Brazil, Nigeria, Angola, South Korea, India, United Arab Emirates and Germany. UAvision has also participated in Exercise REP(MUS) since 2019.

NRP <i>D. João II</i>

NRP D. João II, also known as the Multifunctional Naval Platform, will be a multipurpose ship for the Portuguese Navy, capable of carrying out surveillance operations, oceanographic research, environmental and meteorological monitoring, as well as emergency evacuation missions.

A drone carrier is a crewed or uncrewed ship equipped with a flight deck on which drones can take off and land. This ship can be civilian or military. In addition to drone carriers for unmanned aerial Vehicles, there are also others for unmanned underwater vehicles and unmanned surface vehicles.
