Scotland is one of only six countries to have competed in every Commonwealth Games since the first Empire Games in 1930. The others are Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand and Wales. The Commonwealth Games is the only major multi-sport event in which Scottish athletes and teams compete as Scotland; otherwise Scotland participates in multi-sport events as part of a Great Britain team.
The Falkland Islands has competed in nine editions of the Commonwealth Games. Their first appearance was in 1982, just months after the Falklands War.
Sport in the Falkland Islands is restricted by the islands' low, and generally scattered, population. Nonetheless, it has been able to send teams to the Commonwealth Games, and the Island Games.

It was the third and seventh time England and the United Kingdom hosted the Commonwealth Games, respectively.
The Falkland Islands was represented at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow by 25 athletes across three sports, badminton, shooting, and lawn bowls, the largest ever Falkland Islands squad to be sent to the Commonwealth Games.

New Zealand finished fifth on the medal table, winning a total of 50 medals, 20 of which were gold. This makes these games New Zealand's best performance ever in terms of gold medals, beating the 17 won in Auckland at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, but third overall in terms of total medals, with 50, behind the 58 in 1990, and the 53 at the Games also in Auckland.

Shae Wilson is an international lawn bowler from Norfolk Island. She has represented Norfolk Island at multiple international events, including at two Commonwealth Games.
Doug Clark from the Badminton team, and Daphne Arthur Almond from the lawn bowls team, will have the honour of carrying the flags on behalf of the Falkland Islands at the opening ceremony in Birmingham on the 28th July.
