Falun is a census-designated place (CDP) in southwestern Saline County, Kansas, United States. [1] As of the 2020 census, the population was 83. [2] It lies southwest of Salina and northwest of Lindsborg at the intersection of Forsse Road and Hedberg Road, about 7.5 miles west of Interstate 135 highway, or about 8 miles west of Assaria. [3] It lies next to an abandoned railroad.

History

The 2020 United States census counted 83 people, 45 households, and 39 families in Falun. [7] [8] The population density was 74.8 per square mile (28.9/km2). There were 46 housing units at an average density of 41.5 per square mile (16.0/km2). [8] [9] The racial makeup was 87.95% (73) white or European American (87.95% non-Hispanic white), 1.2% (1) black or African-American, 3.61% (3) Native American or Alaska Native, 1.2% (1) Asian, 0.0% (0) Pacific Islander or Native Hawaiian, 0.0% (0) from other races, and 6.02% (5) from two or more races. [10] Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.82% (4) of the population. [11]

Of the 45 households, 11.1% had children under the age of 18; 82.2% were married couples living together; 4.4% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present. 8.9% of households consisted of individuals and 2.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. [8] The average household size was 2.9 and the average family size was 1.9. [12] The percent of those with a bachelor’s degree or higher was estimated to be 0.0% of the population. [13]

20.5% of the population was under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 19.3% from 25 to 44, 42.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 49.1 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.6 males. [8] For every 100 females ages 18 and older, there were 106.2 males. [8]

The community is served by Smoky Valley USD 400 public school district.
