The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) is a collegiate athletic conference headquartered in Birmingham,Alabama,which is made up of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Southern United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I for most sports;in football,it participates in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS),formerly referred to as Division I-AA.

Prairie View A&M University is a public historically black land-grant university in Prairie View,Texas. Founded in 1876,it is one of Texas's two land-grant universities and the second oldest public institution of higher learning in the state. It offers baccalaureate degrees in 50 academic majors,37 master's degrees and four doctoral degree programs through eight colleges and the School of Architecture. PVAMU is the largest HBCU in the state of Texas and the third largest HBCU in the United States. PVAMU is a member of the Texas A&M University System and Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
Ruth Simmons is an American professor and academic administrator. Simmons served as the eighth president of Prairie View A&M University,a HBCU,from 2017 until 2023. From 2001 to 2012,she served as the 18th president of Brown University,where she was the first African American president of an Ivy League institution. Before Brown University,she headed Smith College,one of the Seven Sisters and the largest women's college in the United States,beginning in 1995.

The State Fair Classic is an annual college football game between the Grambling State University Tigers and the Prairie View A&M University Panthers of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The game is played on a neutral site at the Cotton Bowl in Fair Park,Dallas,Texas during the State Fair of Texas. The game often occurs the weekend before the Red River Showdown game;the Heart of Dallas Classic took place on the first weekend of the 2013 fair,and the State Fair Football Showdown took place on the third weekends of the 2018 and 2019 fairs,featuring SWAC competitors Southern and Texas Southern.

Willie Simmons is the head coach of the Florida A&M Rattlers football team. Simmons was previously the head coach at Prairie View A&M from 2014 to 2017. He has also served as offensive coordinator of the Alcorn State Braves as well as the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders football teams. Simmons played college football at Clemson and The Citadel as a quarterback.
Flossie M. Byrd was a home economist,family and consumer services scientist,educator,and the first provost and vice president for academic affairs at the public historically black university (HBCU),Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) in Prairie View,Texas. She taught in Florida public high schools and at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee,Florida before moving to PVAMU. She earned a PhD in Home Economics Education with minors in child development and educational psychology and measurement from Cornell University in 1963. Her research interests included concept formation,family membership disability,and family resource management.
Adena Williams Loston is the 14th president of St. Philip’s College. She was installed as the new president in ceremonies on March 1,2007. St. Philip’s College,located in San Antonio,Texas,is the only historically Black college and Hispanic-serving institution in the United States.

Landon Bussie is an American college basketball coach who is the current head coach of Alcorn State team.
Christine Sharon Grant is an American chemical engineer who is the Associate Dean of Faculty Advancement at North Carolina State University. Her research considers surface and environmental science. She is the 2022 President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Margaret May-som Shaw Wu is a Taiwanese–American industrial chemist and inventor. As a research chemist at ExxonMobil,Wu developed new lubricants for car engines. She was elected Fellow of the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2020.
