Luhansk Oblast is the easternmost oblast (province) of Ukraine. The oblast uses a cobalt flag charged with its coat of arms.

The flag consists of a cobalt background with a side ratio of 1:1.5 (100 X 165 cm). In the top-left corner of the flag there is a circle, with a radius of 20 cm. The circle's center is 49 cm from the left border of the flag and 39 cm from the top border. Seventeen yellow and 14 white smaller stars, 4 cm in size, surround it. The Luhansk Oblast's small coat of arms is located within the circle. [1]

The emblems of the constituent republics of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics all featured predominantly the hammer and sickle and the red star that symbolised communism, as well as a rising sun, surrounded by a wreath of wheat. The USSR State motto, Workers of the world, unite!, in both the republic's language and Russian was also placed on each one of them. The bobak marmot, also known as the steppe marmot, is a species of marmot that inhabits the steppes of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. It is a social animal and inhabits steppe grassland, including cultivated field borders. It hibernates for more than half the year. Litter sizes average about five offspring and it takes three years for the young marmots to reach sexual maturity. Male offspring leave the home colony after their second winter, and about 60% of mature females give birth in any one year.

Shakhtarsk Raion was one of the raions of Donetsk Oblast, located in eastern Ukraine. The administrative center of the raion was the city of Shakhtarsk, which was incorporated separately as a city of oblast significance and was not part of the raion. The raion was abolished on 18 July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Donetsk Oblast to eight. However the raion has not been under control of the Ukrainian government since 2014, and has been part of the Donetsk People's Republic which in 2015 abolished it and subordinated to the city of Shakhtarsk. The last estimate of the raion population, reported by the Ukrainian government, was 18,878 .

The War in Donbas was an armed conflict in the Donbas region of Ukraine, part of the broader Russo-Ukrainian War. In March 2014, immediately following the Euromaidan protest movement and subsequent Revolution of Dignity, protests by pro-Russian, anti-government separatist groups arose in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts of Ukraine, collectively called the Donbas. These demonstrations began around the same time as Russia's annexation of Crimea, and were part of wider pro-Russian protests across southern and eastern Ukraine. Declaring the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, armed Russian-backed separatist groups seized government buildings throughout the Donbas, leading to armed conflict with Ukrainian government forces.

The Russian occupation of Luhansk Oblast is an ongoing military occupation within Ukraine, which began on 27 April 2014 when part of the oblast came under the control of the Luhansk People's Republic, a breakaway Russian puppet quasi-state located within it. The oblast's administrative centre is Luhansk; however, its Regional State Administration has been temporarily relocated to Sievierodonetsk because of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, which was itself captured on 25 June 2022 after a long battle by Russian and pro-Russian forces.

The 2022 Ukrainian eastern counteroffensive is an ongoing counteroffensive by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory of Kharkiv Oblast, Donetsk Oblast, and Luhansk Oblast, that was launched on 6 September 2022. Following the launch of the Ukrainian southern counteroffensive in Kherson in late August, Ukrainian forces began a second counteroffensive in early September in Kharkiv Oblast, in the east of the country.

On 30 September 2022, Russia, amid an ongoing invasion of Ukraine, unilaterally declared its annexation of four Ukrainian oblasts – Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. The four annexed regions make up about 15% of Ukraine's territory, and none of them were fully under Russian control at the time. The annexation is the largest in Europe since World War II.

The Battle of Svatove is a current military conflict between Russia and Ukraine over the eastern Ukrainian city of Svatove. The battle began on October 3, 2022, a day after the Ukrainian army recaptured the strategic town of Lyman in Donetsk Oblast.
