The Fokker PW-5 (designated Fokker F VI by Fokker) was a Dutch fighter aircraft of the 1920s. It was a parasol monoplane of which twelve were built for the US Army Air Service, being used as advanced trainers.

Design and development

In 1921, the US Army Air Service evaluated the Fokker D.VIII parasol monoplane, and the D.VII biplane, both fighters handed over to it after the Armistice with Germany that ended World War I. It placed an order for two examples of a parasol monoplane fighter based on the design of the D.VIII, but powered by an American-built Hispano-Suiza V-8 engine, for evaluation. [1] These aircraft, designated by Fokker as Fokker F VI, [nb 1] had plywood-covered wooden cantilever wings similar to those in the D.VIII and the contemporary D.X fighters, and a typical Fokker welded steel-tube fuselage. The forward fuselage was protected by armour plates, although the car-type radiator and the wing-mounted fuel tank had no such protection. The aircraft had a fixed tailskid undercarriage, while it had no fixed fin, having a balanced rudder instead. [3] [4]

Operational history

In 1921, the two evaluation examples were delivered in 1921, although one of them crashed on 13 March 1922 when its wing failed owing to flutter. [3] [5] An order for a further 10 aircraft was placed, and delivered later in 1921, the aircraft being used as advanced trainers by the 1st Pursuit Group. [1]

Fokker V.1

The Fokker V.1 was a small German sesquiplane experimental fighter prototype built in 1916 by the Fokker-Flugzeugwerke. Sporting a parasol wing, it was the first Fokker aircraft purportedly designed by Reinhold Platz—the respective roles played by Fokker himself, Platz, and possibly others in the conceptual design of Fokker airplanes are a matter of dispute among historians—and was an early experiment in cantilever wing construction, eliminating the bracing wires typical of aircraft design at the time, something that had already been achieved with metal materials in Hugo Junkers' own pioneering Junkers J 1 in 1915.

Fokker D.III

The Fokker D.III was a German single-seat fighter aircraft of World War I. It saw limited frontline service before being withdrawn from combat in December 1916.

Dornier Do H Falke 1920s German fighter aircraft

The Dornier Do H Falke was a German single-seat fighter, designed by Claude Dornier and built by Dornier Flugzeugwerke. Although an advanced design for its time, being evaluated by the United States Navy as the Wright WP-1, it did not go into production.

Fokker C.VIII

The Fokker C.VIII was a reconnaissance aircraft built in the Netherlands in the late 1920s. Intended primarily for the photographic reconnaissance role, it was a larger machine than other Fokker reconnaissance types of the period, with space for a third crew member, who acted as camera operator. It was also Fokker's first aircraft of this type to be built as a monoplane, a parasol wing configuration. The construction, however, was in the familiar Fokker style with wooden wings covered with plywood and fabric, and a steel-tube fuselage, also fabric-covered.

Loening PW-2

Verville VCP

The Verville VCP was an American single-engined biplane fighter aircraft of the 1920s. A single example of the VCP-1 was built by the United States Army Air Service's Engineering Division, which was later rebuilt into a successful racing aircraft, while a second, modified fighter was built as the PW-1.
