The sport of football in the country of Suriname is run by the Surinamese Football Association. [1] The association administers the national football team, as well as the national football league. [2] [3] [4]

Since the launch of professional football on February 22, 2024, [5] ten teams are competing in the professional Suriname Major League. [6]

National team

The 1978 FIFA World Cup was the nearest the national team got to qualifying a major world tournament. [7] The national team has lost potential players to the Netherlands. [8]

Founded on 6 February 1945, Robinhood is the most successful club in Surinamese football, having won a record 25 league titles, and a record of five Beker van Surinames and President's Cups apiece. The club was the first Surinamese club to make the final of a North American tournament, reaching the 1972 CONCACAF Champions' Cup final. Though making five CONCACAF club championship finals in their history, Robinhood had never won a continental title until 2023, when they won both the 2023 Caribbean Shield and the 2023 Caribbean Cup.

Sport Vereniging Leo Victor, known as SV Leo Victor, is a Surinamese football club which plays in the level of Surinamese football. They play their home games in Paramaribo at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadion.

The SVB Eerste Divisie is the highest football championship for clubs run by the Surinaamse Voetbal Bond. The Topklasse is at the top of the system of Surinamese football championships. The league currently comprises twelve teams and operates a system of promotion and relegation. Seasons run from November to June of the next year, with teams playing 30 games in the regular season. The league was known as the Hoofdklasse but became Topklasse beginning with the 2016–17 season, and then from the 2017–18 season forward, the Eerste Divisie. The competition changed to a professional league format in 2024 also changing its name to Suriname Major League
