Football is the most popular sport in Suriname, with around 55% of the people in the country considered football fans. [1] The sport of football in the country of Suriname is run by the Surinamese Football Association. [2] The association administers the national football team, as well as the national football league. [3] [4] [5]

Since the launch of professional football on February 22, 2024, [6] ten teams are competing in the professional Suriname Major League. [7]

National team

The 1978 FIFA World Cup was the nearest the national team got to qualifying a major world tournament. [8] The national team has lost potential players to the Netherlands. [9]
