Francis Edward Fitzpatrick (born April 13, 1961), more commonly known as Frank Fitzpatrick, is an American composer, music producer, author, wellness expert, [1] [2] filmmaker and social entrepreneur.

Fitzpatrick is best known for his career in the entertainment industry as a songwriter, record producer, soundtrack composer and filmmaker. He is also the founder of the non-profit organization EarthTones.

Early life

Fitzpatrick was born in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan's music and business schools in 1983.[ citation needed ] While there, he worked for Eclipse Jazz, a student-run body striving for better exposure of jazz artists through the production of live shows in the Ann Arbor area. Career

Early career

Fitzpatrick relocated to Los Angeles in 1983 to work for record producer Richard Perry of Planet Records. [4] He started working as a music editor for television in 1984, initially as a supervising music editor on the series Alvin and the Chipmunks and Crime Story, among others.[ citation needed ]

Fitzpatrick later expanded into film music by working as a music editor for the film composer Georges Delerue, going on to co-produce an orchestral retrospective of Delerue's film scores in 1991, The London Sessions, which included a track co-written by Fitzpatrick and performed by Carl Anderson entitled "Between You and Me." Soundtracks

In the '90s, Fitzpatrick began working as a film composer, music supervisor and executive music producer in Hollywood. [7]

The first film score he is credited for is that of Nuns on the Run , the 1990 comedy featuring Eric Idle and Robbie Coltrane. [8] [9] Further contributions in the 90s included soundtracks for the films Friday, Pirates of Silicon Valley and In Too Deep, as well as working as the composer and music director for The Larry Sanders Show. [10] [11]

In 2021, Ingrooves/Universal, in association with HBO, released an album of his music from the show performed by The Larry Sanders Show Band. [12]

From 2000-2020, Fitzpatrick continued to create soundtracks for films, including Queen of the Damned (2002), [13] Scary Movie 3 (2003), [14] Jump In! , [7] The Proud Family Movie , [15] and Bring It On: Worldwide Cheersmack . [16] [9] In association with Hollywood Elite Composers, Ingrooves/Universal released a compilation tribute album commemorating Fitzpatrick’s 30 years as a film composer entitled Original Scores by Frank Fitzpatrick. [17]

In 2022, in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the original Friday film, EnVisage Entertainment and Ingrooves/Universal released Fitzpatrick’s previously unreleased original score to the film. The score featured his band Hidden Faces. [18]

Songwriter and music producer

In 2008, Fitzpatrick wrote the Grammy-nominated song “Soul Music,” [19] performed by Anthony Hamilton and selected in the category “Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards” [20] The song was the title track for the film Soul Men . [19]

In 2010, in partnership with Terry McBride, Fitzpatrick produced Yoga Revolution, a compilation CD to promote yoga and meditation programs in schools. The album featured recordings from Sheryl Crow and Sting, among others. [21] [22]

His 2017 single “Call On Me” and music video from Universal’s film Bring It On: Worldwide were part of a non-profit initiative to promote music and arts for schools. [23]

His 2018 single “Stronger Than Pride” was the theme song for Love Jacked, [24] a film distributed by Netflix. [25] [26]

In 2019, Fitzpatrick released a 20th Anniversary Edition of his 1999 solo piano album entitled New Standards, which included a piano version of “Stronger Than Pride” [27] as well as a book of original sheet music under the same title. [27]

Filmmaker

In 2001, Fitzpatrick directed and produced the short film Jungle Jazz: Public Enemy #1, which premiered at the 2001 Berlin International Film Festival, winning The Silver Bear Award for best Short Film. [28] The film won additional awards in Sydney, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Kansas City and Santa Cruz. [29] [30] In 2007, Fitzpatrick completed his first animated short film The Rebel Angel.

The majority of his film work has come through music videos. Amongst his work are the 2011 videos “Hip Hop Nation” (featuring recording artists KRS-One and K’naan) [31] and “Express Yourself” (featuring Nneka and Ziggy Marley). [32]

In 2018, Frank was an executive producer for the romantic comedy Love Jacked. [33] [ failed verification ]

Music, Health & Technology

In 2011, Fitzpatrick attended the Executive Program at Singularity University. The following year, he helped facilitate Singularity University's inaugural Hollywood Executive Program. [34] [35] In 2014, he joined the faculty of Exponential Medicine at the university, an annual conference discussing the implications of breakthrough technologies on healthcare. [36] In 2017 and 2019 [37] he was a speaker at the conference, presenting as an expert on music and health. [38] [36]

In 2020, Fitzpatrick joined the Sound Health Network, a collaboration between the NEA, UCSF, the NIH and the Kennedy Center. [39] He started writing an ongoing series of articles on the convergence of sound, music, health and technology as a contributing writer for Forbes. [39]

In 2021, he expanded his writing to include blogs and articles for Thrive Global and ExO Insights, [40] and published the book Amplified, with a foreword by Daniel Levitan, author of “This is Your Brain On Music”. The same year, Fitzpatrick presented presented to leaders in business, health and exponential technology at Singularity University Australia Summit [41] and as a Music and Health expert for public news programs including Fox and iHeart Radio. [42]

In 2022, Fitzpatrick joined Apple as a Music and Health Specialist. [39]

Philanthropy and social entrepreneurship

EarthTones

Fitzpatrick as the founder of EarthTones, a non-profit arts organization, has created a number of initiatives and partnerships serving youth through music, education and wellbeing. [43]

In 2012, EarthTones launched the WHY Music project, an initiative to provide people with a way to best utilize the benefits of music in all the areas of their lives. [44] WHY Music began with a series of articles in the Huffington Post, [45] and expanded to include a series of live talks, round tables, and workshops. That year, EarthTones partnered with City of Hope to launch Yoga For Hope in Los Angeles, in support of people dealing with life-threatening diseases. [46] [47] In 2013, Fitzpatrick was nominated as a Gifted Citizen from the Ciudad de las Ideas for the WHY Music project's potential to positively impact over 10 million lives. [48] The project later expanded further with a program tailored for schools. [49]

In 2016, Fitzpatrick collaborated with humanitarian photographer Lisa Kristine to create the video "A Prayer for Freedom", part of the End Slavery Campaign initiated by Pope Francis and a coalition of spiritual leaders from around the world. [50] [51] The video premiered at the Vatican in Rome, the House of Lords in Westminster, and at the opening of the Enslaved Exhibition at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Ohio. [52]

Social entrepreneurship

Along with Director of Pepperdine's Center for Media and Entertainment, Craig Detweiler, Fitzpatrick created and hosted the 2014 International Forum Education: Disrupted at Pepperdine University. [53]

Fitzpatrick has been invited as a delegate to the 2012 Skoll World Forum for Social Entrepreneurs, [54] the 2014 UK Arts and Humanities Research Council’s forum on Video Games, Music Creativity and Education, [55] and the 2017 Novus Summit at the United Nations. He has also been a keynote speaker at the TEDx and Esalen. [56] [57] [58] [59]

In 2021, he joined Singularity University Australia as part of their expert faculty. [60]

Since 2012, Fitzpatrick has written for a number of publications and online forums, including LA Yoga, [61] Forbes and ExO Insight. [62]

In 2021, he published the non-fiction book entitled Amplified: Unleash Your Potential Through the Power of Music. [40] [63]

The festival also puts the spotlight on film music; since 2001, Film Fest Gent has hosted the World Soundtrack Awards, a series of prizes for the best soundtracks for film and television.

The Georges Delerue Award for Best Music, or Georges Delerue Prize / Prix Georges Delerue, is an award for the best film score. It is named after the French composer Georges Delerue, and was first awarded at the 1985 Film Fest Gent festival. Past winners include: Benny Andersson, Ry Cooder, Bruno Coulais, Jean-Luc Godard, Michael Kamen, Astor Piazzolla, Rachel Portman, Howard Shore, Toru Takemitsu, and Vangelis.

<i>Dunkirk</i> (soundtrack) 2017 soundtrack album by Hans Zimmer

Dunkirk (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack to the 2017 film of the same name directed by Christopher Nolan, released under WaterTower Music on 21 July 2017, the same day as the film's theatrical release. The score was composed and created by Hans Zimmer, who collaborated with Lorne Balfe, Andrew Kawczynski, Steve Mazzaro, and Benjamin Wallfisch to provide additional music. It was recorded at a 11-month period during early-2016 and several instrumentation and sounds were modified to create intensity in the score. Nolan and Zimmer wanted to create suspense through cinematography and music, hence Zimmer had written several tracks to accommodate the auditory Shepard tone illusion, a feature that has been explored in Nolan's previous films.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Juliet Lyons</span> American singer

Juliet Lyons is an American singer, songwriter, and production music composer. Her album, The Light Within: Songs For Yoga, Healing, & Inner Peace, charted at #3 on Billboard's New Age album charts and she's won two HMMA Awards and a Peace Award. She is perhaps best known as the featured vocalist in the Cinderella trailer and for her cover of Billy Idol’s “White Wedding,” in the ABC Family television show Pretty Little Liars.

Matthew S. Remski is a yoga practitioner and author who has written on the connection between yoga and conspiracy theories. His work has been informed by his past experience as a cult member. Remski was instrumental in exposing inappropriate physical contact in Yoga classes through an article that he wrote for The Walrus in 2018.

The music for the 2019 film Jojo Rabbit, was written, composed, produced, conducted, orchestrated and supervised by Michael Giacchino. Regarding the score, Giacchino explained, "I didn’t want the music to be funny. The bulk of the movie has this huge heart, especially in the character of Jojo himself, and I wanted to make sure I wasn’t adding to the zaniness. I wanted to underline the emotional component. For me, it’s a devastating story but in the end an uplifting one. With everything we’re going through now, it felt like something important to be a part of." Around 45 minutes of the score was conducted and recorded by Giacchino at the Abbey Road Studios in London with a 35-piece orchestra. The film also features a soundtrack album that had songs incorporated from various artists. The soundtrack and score is influenced of contemporary music originated in West Germany, suiting with the theme and mood of the film.

<i>Marriage Story</i> (soundtrack) 2019 film score by Randy Newman

Marriage Story (Original Music from the Netflix film) is the score album to the 2019 film of the same name, directed by Noah Baumbach. The score is written and composed by Randy Newman, who previously worked with Baumbach on The Meyerowitz Stories (2017). Over 14 tracks were compiled into the album, which was recorded at the Newman Scoring Stage in 20th Century Fox Studios, with a 40-piece chamber orchestra, ranging from various instruments. Newman called the score as a "rush of cool water in a moviemaking era that rarely asks for things like lyricism, or instrumental solos".

<i>John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum</i> (soundtrack) 2019 film score by Tyler Bates and Joel J. Richard

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is the soundtrack album to the 2019 film John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the third instalment in the John Wick franchise, starring Keanu Reeves as the eponymous character, and is directed by Chad Stahelski, who also directed the previous instalments. Tyler Bates and Joel J. Richard, also returned as the composer for the series. The album, consisted most of Bates and Richard's score, while a song "Dance of the Two Wolves" performed by Julia Aks is also in the soundtrack. Varèse Sarabande released the soundtrack album digitally on May 17, 2019, coinciding the film's release, and physically on June 7, 2019. The two-disc vinyl edition of the soundtrack were released into a trilogy, along with the scores from previous instalments on November 15.
