Full of Hell is the debut studio album by American sludge metal band Howl, released through Relapse Records on May 11, 2010. [1] After signing a recording contract with Relapse Records in May 2009, [2] Howl re-released their self-titled EP, Howl , on July 21, 2009. [3] To promote the EP, the band toured East Coast between August and October 2009, while worked composing new songs. [4] [5] The band recorded Full of Hell at Machine with Magnets Studios in Pawtucket, Rhode Island with engineers Keith Souza and Seth Manchester in late December 2009. [6] Upon finished work, guitarist and lead vocalist Vincent Hausman told Noisecreep: "The new album is, if anything, more extreme than the EP, moving from aggression to slow doom metal, through both black metal atmospheres and blues-based harmonies. We really tried to incorporate the various styles in metal we love, though never losing sight of what this band is ultimately about: the almighty riff." [6]

Sludge metal is an extreme style of music that originated through combining elements of doom metal and hardcore punk. It is typically harsh and abrasive, often featuring shouted vocals, heavily distorted instruments and sharply contrasting tempos. While the Melvins from the US state of Washington laid the groundwork for both sludge metal and grunge in the 1980s, sludge as a distinct genre emerged after 1990 through the work of Louisiana bands such as Eyehategod, Crowbar, and Acid Bath, who generally borrowed from Southern rock. Later bands often border on stoner rock or post-metal.

Howl is an American sludge metal band from Providence, Rhode Island, formed in 2006. They released their debut album, Full of Hell, in May 2010.

Hausman explained to Verbicide Magazine that Full of Hell is dedicated to "all [people] who were made to feel out of place in school or church, for those [...] who were made to feel guilty about doing what [they] wanted, for those [...] who others called 'fags', 'weirdos', and 'losers'." He added, "This is for us, for the metalheads. We are full of hell." [1] The album's simplistic lyrical theme was unnoticed by critics, who praised mostly the band's aggressive musicianship. Exclaim! magazine noted Howl's take on the doom metal genre as "something unique, violent and ugly, but there's also heaps of potential for a bit of just-beyond-underground recognition". [7] The A.V. Club described the album by saying: "Heavy, bossy doom with just enough stoner-fuzz elements to build into something much more crushing, Full of Hell features enjoyable wacko lyrics, a super-tight songwriting structure, and a solid sound that seems like it's coming from a much more seasoned band." [8]

Quantum Catastrophe is the second studio album by American technical death metal band Brain Drill, released through Metal Blade on May 11, 2010. After the release of their debut album Apocalyptic Feasting in February 2008, the band almost broke up with the departure of drummer Marco Pitruzzella and bassist Jeff Hughell in March 2008. The remaining members, guitarist Dylan Ruskin and vocalist Steve Rathjen decided to continue with the band, and from May to September 2008, auditioned for bassists and drummers. In September 2008, the band announced drummer Joe Bondra and bassist Ivan Munguia as replacements. Bondra was replaced by drummer Ron Casey and this new lineup began work on the album in August 2009. Black Tusk (band) band

Black Tusk is an American sludge metal band from Savannah, Georgia. The band was formed in 2005, when its members were all living on the same street. With the dissolution of Andrew Fidler's and Jonathan Athon's crust punk band and James May's street punk band, Andrew and Athon went down the street to James' house and asked him if he wanted to play with them. During the next few days they jammed continuously, and within a few months they had recorded the EP When Kingdoms Fall, which was released on Wrecked Signal. Two years later the band self-released their first full-length studio album, The Fallen Kingdom, followed by another a year later with Passage Through Purgatory, released through the local label Hyperrealist Records. In 2009, Black Tusk released a series of split albums with bands such as ASG, The Holy Mountain, and Fight Amp, before sign to Relapse Records in November. The band released its debut for Relapse, Taste the Sin, in May 2010.

Society's Finest is a Christian metal band from Dallas, Texas. Their first full-length album, The Journey...So Far, was released on Solid State Records in May 2000. Due to member changes and personal matters the band took a break from touring and recording to focus on their personal lives. During this hiatus, vocalist Josh Ashworth toured with the Christian metal band Zao.

Our Raw Heart is the eighth studio album by American doom metal band YOB. It was released June 8, 2018 by Relapse Records. The album was produced by Billy Barnett. The album was inspired by a serious health issue suffered by singer and guitarist Mike Scheidt in early 2017, and most of the music was written while he was in a hospital bed. The album has been described as a cross between the band's two previous studio albums, mixing the aggression of Atma (2011) with the psychedelic experimentation of Clearing the Path to Ascend (2014). Metal Injection called the album "engaging and revealing, immediately appealing but with subtle nuances and layers that only become apparent after subsequent listens. It's a powerful and cathartic release," while Rolling Stone praised the band for "subvert[ing] doom's bleak conventions, painting the genre's slowpoke churn with uplifting melodies, cosmic textures and Scheidt's existential howl like a dreampop Dio." NPR Music said about the album: "the lightness is devastating."

Hooded Menace Finnish band

Hooded Menace are a death-doom band formed in Joensuu, Finland in 2007 by guitarist Lasse Pyykkö, who had previously performed in a Finnish death metal band named Phlegethon. The band kickstarted their career by recording a 2-track demo titled The Eyeless Horde in 2007, which was released on 7" vinyl the following year. The band released their debut album, Fulfill the Curse, in 2008; followed by the highly acclaimed sophomore full-length album, Never Cross the Dead, in 2010.
