Gary A. Winfield (born March 11,1974) is an American politician from the state of Connecticut and member of the Democratic Party. He serves in the Connecticut State Senate,representing the 10th district. From 2009 to 2014 he served as a State Representative from the 94th Assembly District. Winfield served as Deputy Majority Leader in his tenure as a State Representative.
Winfield was raised in The Bronx,a Borough of New York City,by his mother. [1] He graduated from Westbury High School in Old Westbury,New York. [2] He served in the United States Navy from 1994 to 2000 and became a Nuclear Electrician's Mate. He attended Southern Connecticut State University from 2003 to 2006 and received a bachelor of science in political science. He works for the American Association of University Professors. [1]
Shortly after entering the house Winfield was the lead sponsor of a bill to abolish the death penalty in Connecticut. The freshman's efforts led to the first successful passage of the bill in either chamber of the legislature. While Winfield was successful in getting the bill to the governor's desk it was vetoed. Several years later a subsequent attempt led to the passage and signing by then Governor Dan Malloy.
Winfield was also the driving force behind a bill which put in place protections for transgender citizens in public accommodation which would later be used against him in his run for his senate seat. [3] He was also the force behind the TRUST ACT which was the first statewide passage of such a bill in the country,several police accountability bills,the first in the nation racial and ethnic impact statement on demand without restrictions,and prosecutorial transparency bill along with several other progressive wins. [4] Winfield is the first non attorney to serve as co-chair of the state’s Judiciary Committee.
Winfield,along with state rep,Patricia Dillon,proposed a bill which would declare pizza the official state food of Connecticut. [5] Justin Elicker,the mayor of New Haven,testified in support of the bill. [6]
Winfield was first elected to the Connecticut House in 2008. [1] In 2013,he declared his candidacy for Mayor of New Haven,but he dropped out and endorsed Toni Harp,a member of the Connecticut Senate. [7]
Following Harp's election as mayor,Winfield declared his candidacy in the special election to succeed Harp in representing the 10th district in the Connecticut Senate. [8] He won with 75% of the vote. [2]
Born as a Catholic,Winfield now identifies as Baptist. [1] He met Natalie,his first wife,in high school. [2] They divorced in 2014. Winfield married his second wife,Rasheda,in 2016. Rasheda brought two children into the marriage and on February 11,2018 the couple welcomed twins Imani Harriet and Gary Rashid to the family. [9]

Jason L. McCoy is the former mayor of Vernon,Connecticut,and a trial lawyer. In 2009,McCoy was elected to his first term in 2007. McCoy was re-elected as mayor. He had served on the Vernon Town Council and was the deputy mayor of Vernon from 2005 to 2007. In 2009,McCoy was one of six mayors in Connecticut chosen by the Governor M. Jodi Rell to work closely with state officials and lawmakers to identify savings and recommend mandate relief to help close Connecticut's state budget shortfall. McCoy served as mayor of a municipality that holds town meetings to pass the mayor's yearly proposed municipal budget,which can then be sent to referendum for approval by privately cast ballot. During McCoy's two terms as mayor of Vernon he proposed and passed four municipal budgets. The Town of Vernon municipal budgets during McCoy's terms as mayor resulted in the municipal tax rate or mil rate needed to fund the municipal budget being reduced in the 2008–09,2009–10 budgets,the 2010–11 tax rate or mil rate remained the same. In the 2011–12 budget the tax rate was cut which resulted in a taxes cut to the taxpayers in the Town of Vernon,Connecticut. The 2011–12 budget proposal was passed and adopted at the annual town meeting as opposed to being sent to referendum.
Kevin Galvin is a Connecticut-based business activist. He is the founding chair of the Small Business for Health Care Reform advisory committee and is best known for his efforts as an advocate for the interests of small business in the reform of health care systems. Galvin participated in the national health care reform debate that culminated in the passage and signing of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in March 2010. He and his coalition also played a role in the passage of Connecticut's SustiNet health care reform plan in 2009.
Elizabeth Esty is an American lawyer and politician who served as a U.S. Representative from Connecticut's 5th congressional district from 2013 to 2019. A Democrat,she previously was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives,representing the 103rd Assembly District,which consisted of Cheshire and parts of Hamden and Wallingford. She also served two terms on the Cheshire Town Council. The 5th congressional district spans central and northwest Connecticut,including Waterbury,Danbury,New Britain,Meriden,Torrington,Litchfield County,the Farmington Valley,Newtown,and Esty's hometown of Cheshire.
Lubbie Harper Jr. is an American lawyer and judge who was the third African American to become a justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court,serving from 2011 through 2012. While seconded to the court in 2008,he cast the deciding vote in Kerrigan v. Commissioner of Public Health,a ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in Connecticut. Harper also served as a justice on the Connecticut Superior Court (1997–2005) and on the Connecticut Appellate Court (2005–2011).

In 2021,Dillon,alongside State Senator Gary Winfield,introduced a bill to make pizza Connecticut's official state food. Dillon currently serves as a member of the House Judiciary Committee,Appropriations Committee,and Environment Committee.
