Patricia Billie Miller is an American politician serving as a member of the Connecticut State Senate from the 27th district. Miller was elected in a special election following the resignation of Carlo Leone. Previously,served in the Connecticut House of Representatives from the 145th district. Miller is the first woman and person of color to represent Stamford in either chamber of the legislature. She is a member of the Democratic Party.
In 2008,Miller was first elected to the 145th district seat,defeating Republican Fritz Blau. [1] Her election win was considered significant because she became the first black person to represent Stamford in either chamber of the General Assembly. [2] Miller was re-elected in 2010,2012,2014,2016,2018,and 2020. [3]
In January 2021,longtime senator Carlo Leone retired to take a position in Governor Ned Lamont's administration. [4] In a special election held on March 2,Miller won over Republican challenger Joshua Esses. [5] After her swearing in on March 8,she became the first woman and first person of color to represent the city of Stamford in the State Senate. [2]
During the 2022 Senate debate on House Bill 5414,which expanded abortion access and protections for providers and abortion patients from laws in other states meant to curb abortions,Miller echoed the concern voiced by Rep. TreneéMcGee during the state House's debate on the bill that Black women were too often forced into using abortion as birth control because of a lack of support for other options. "I hear family planning —code word for abortion. Why can't it be a code word for planning your family?" she said. "Sometimes we don't have the choice because we don't have the money." She was one of several Democrats to vote against the bill,which passed with a comfortable majority and was soon signed into law as the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act by Governor Ned Lamont. [6]
Susan Bysiewicz is an American politician and attorney who is the 109th lieutenant governor of Connecticut,serving since January 9,2019. She previously served as the 72nd secretary of the state of Connecticut from 1999 to 2011. She was briefly a candidate for governor of Connecticut in 2010,before dropping out to run for Connecticut Attorney General. She was disqualified from running for the office by the Connecticut Supreme Court and announced in 2011 that she was running for the United States Senate in the 2012 election to replace the retiring Joe Lieberman. She lost the Democratic primary to U.S. Representative Chris Murphy,who went on to win the general election.
Edward Miner Lamont Jr. is an American businessman and politician serving since January 2019 as the 89th governor of Connecticut. A member of the Democratic Party,he served as a Greenwich selectman from 1987 to 1989 and was the party's nominee for the United States Senate in 2006,losing to incumbent Joe Lieberman.

Carlo Leone is an American politician serving as the senior adviser to ConnDOT commissioner Joseph Giulietti. Leone formerly represented the 27th district of the Connecticut State Senate as a Democrat from 2011 until his resignation in 2021. While in the State Senate,he served as deputy president pro tempore and chair of the Transportation Committee. Leone also served in the Connecticut House of Representatives representing the 148th district from 2003 to 2011. As a Democrat,he served as the deputy majority whip in the House of Representatives.

House Bill 5414,passed by the Connecticut General Assembly and signed into law by that U.S. state's Governor,Ned Lamont,on May 5,2022,as the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act,is intended to protect abortion in the state and expand the procedure's availability. Several of its provisions are responses to the Texas Heartbeat Act,passed in late 2021 and since emulated by two other states,that would prevent enforcement in Connecticut of judgements obtained by lawsuits filed under those laws against abortion providers,patients and those who facilitate them. It also allows more non-physician providers to perform certain types of abortions,codifying a past legal opinion. The law took effect July 1.
