Geovanny Vicente-Romero is a Dominican political strategist, lawyer, columnist, international consultant and university professor who teaches strategic communications at Columbia University as an associate lecturer. [1] He specializes in public policy and public administration, [2] and has several years of experience in the public sector, academics, and journalism. He writes a weekly column for CNN as a political analyst. [3]

Early life and education

Geovanny Antonio Vicente Romero was born in Padre Las Casas (Azua) in 1986 to a family of lawyers. His father, Marino Vicente Rosado has been working as judge for over 20 years (and he is still in office), and his mother, Digna Romero is also a lawyer, who served as an interim judge. He spent his childhood and university years in Dominican Republic, and after that he spent, a few years of working there. Geovanny Vicente moved to the US in 2013 and has been working there since then. [4] [5] [6]

Vicente Romero holds a bachelor's degree in law and public policy from the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (2009). He obtained a master's degree in criminology and prisons (2011) from the University of Murcia, in Spain. He went to the George Washington University to get a master's degree in Political Communication and Strategic Governance from the Political Management School. [5]

Career

As a political analyst, [7] [8] Geovanny regularly appears on leading international news outlets including CNN, The Washington Post, [9]   Washington Examiner , [10] Newsweek , [11] HuffPost, [12] The Jerusalem Post , [13] BBC's World Business Report, [14] [15] Infobae, and Mundo Hispánico, [16] in both Spanish and English, about the United States, Latin America, and Europe. He has been a strong advocate of climate change remedies [17] and the importance of developing sustainability [18] [19] [20] Also, Vicente Romero writes a column in CNN, Infobae, [21] El Diario La Prensa , La Opinión , El Nuevo Día , [22] La Prensa Gráfica and El Telégrafo. [23]

He has been a featured writer for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) [24] and international news agencies such as Mexico's El Universal, [25] among others. He worked for the Ministry of Public Administration of the Dominican Republic [26] [27] [28] [29] [30] as public policy analyst going on to become the interim Director of the Dominican civil service for a couple of months. Vicente Romero also taught two law classes per semester at Universidad Central del Este for 5 years. He is the founder of the Center for Public Policy, Development, and Leadership of the Dominican Republic (CPDL-RD), and the recipient of the Dominican Republic's Provincial Youth Award in Professional Leadership [34] granted by the Dominican Presidency and Ministry of Youth. Romero also received the Robert E. Lesher scholarship granted by Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School, in Washington, D.C., in 2017. [35]

Democracy and elections

Geovanny has worked in partnership with New York University through the DC Dialogues series, an academic initiative that addresses topics such as development, business, governance and democracy. [36] [37] [38] During these discussions, Geovanny has moderated dialogues with the Secretary General of the Organization of American States Luis Almagro, [39] [40] [41] [42] The Dominican Republic's President Luis Abinader, [43] Costa Rica's President Carlos Alvarado, [44] Colombia's former President Alvaro Uribe, [45] El Salvador's Vice-president Felix Ulloa, [46] Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars's Latin American Program Director Dr. Cynthia J. Arnson, [47] National Endowment for Democracy's Director for Latin America and the Caribbean Miriam Kornblith, [48] Inter-American Dialogue's President Michael Shifter, [49] [50] Puerto Rican Mayor María Meléndez, [51] among others.

Vicente Romero has worked as an international election observer. He was one of the observers during the launch of the first sample-based election monitoring in the United States, Observe D.C., an initiative of Georgetown University that came out during the mid-term elections of 2018. [52] [53] [54] He has observed elections in the United States, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, among other countries. [55] In February 2019, he observed the presidential election in El Salvador through the electoral observation mission of the Organization of American States. [56]

Civil society experience

Founder and Chairperson of the Center of Public Policy, Leadership and Development (since its inception in Santo Domingo in 2013), a non-profit, non-governmental organization. This is a think tank, based in the Dominican Republic, that promotes strong institutions and democracy by generating policy research, promoting ideas, and fostering discussion between the public and policymakers. Since 2014, the center has been invited by the Organization of American States (OAS) to represent the Dominican Republic's civil society in the National Consultation with Civil Society and Social Actors in occasion of the Summit of the Americas. [57]

On 6 July 2019, the City Council of Azua de Compostela and its Mayor Rafael Hidalgo awarded Geovanny Vicente Romero the honor of "Hijo Adoptivo de la Ciudad de Azua" (Adopted Son of Azua City) through the resolution No. 19-2019. [55] On 10 July 2019, the Dominican Federation of Municipalities (FEDOMU) recognized Vicente Romero for his contributions to the Dominican Republic's municipalities as well as for his leading role in the international public opinion.

Analysis of the Odebrecht Scandal

As the investigations proceed, more and more evidence comes to light, and it looks like Odebrecht (Latin America's largest construction firm) created the largest bribery ring in history. [58] After Operation Car Wash ended with the court sentencing Marcelo Odebrecht to 19 years in prison, several Latin American countries opened their own investigations. In the Dominican Republic, former congressman, Manual Manuel Jiménez filed an official complaint in February 2017. He partially based his file on Geovanny Vicente Romero's article [59] about the Odebrecht case, which also served as evidence in the lawsuit. In his article, Vicente Romero claims that the Dominican Republic received the second largest bribe from Odebrech (after Venezuela). As prosecutors throughout Latin America started to investigate the Odebrecht bribes seriously, top-ranking officials, businessmen and even presidents seem to have been involved: Peru, for example ordered the arrest of the former president Alejandro Toledo. [60] As a conclusion of the investigation in the Dominican Republic, nearly a dozen people were arrested on 29 May 2017. [61]

Personal life

Vicente Romero married Jennifer Miel, executive director, U.S.-Bahrain Business Council and U.S.-Turkey Business Council, [62]  on 25 August 2019. [63] The couple has a son, Marvin Alejandro Vicente Miel, born in 2020. [64]

Geovanny Vicente Romero is co-author of several books on political communication, governance and democracy.

Vicente Romero is currently working on two books; one about the political and economic future of the Central American region, and the other about the American Dream's myths and realities from the vantage point of Latinos in the USA.

Eastern Central University is a private university in the Dominican Republic, founded in San Pedro de Macorís on October 15, 1970, in the eastern region of the country. At an undergraduate level, the UCE has twelve academic departments: Medicine, Dentistry, Bioanalysis, Pharmaceutics, Business Sciences, Systems, Tourism, Production Sciences, Construction Sciences, Natural Resources, Law, and Social and Public Communication. The Dominican State officially recognized the institution through the Presidential Decree N°. 1205, on July 2, 1971.

Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium is an open-air multi-purpose stadium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The stadium has a sporting events' capacity of 27,000 people, though it has seen crowds of 35,000. For concerts, its stated capacity is 50,000 people.

Padre Las Casas is a municipality (municipio) of the Azua province in the Dominican Republic. It includes the municipal districts of La Siembra, Las Lagunas, and Los Fríos.

Luis Rodolfo Abinader Corona is a Dominican economist, businessman, and politician who has served as the 54th president of the Dominican Republic since 2020. He was the Modern Revolutionary Party candidate for President of the Dominican Republic in the 2016, 2020, and 2024 general elections.

Vicente García Guillén is a Dominican musician, singer and composer. He is the former lead singer of the Dominican alternative rock band Calor Urbano, which he left in 2010 to pursue a solo career. Garcia has collaborated in concerts with renowned artists such as Juan Luis Guerra, Alejandro Sanz, Cultura Profetica, Juanes, Ximena Sariñana and Maná among others. He has won four Latin Grammy awards including Best New Artist in 2017.

Jean Alain Rodríguez Sánchez is a Dominican lawyer and politician former Attorney General of the Dominican Republic. He was appointed to the position of President Danilo Medina. Before becoming Attorney General, Rodríguez Sánchez served as the executive director of the CEI-RD (2012-2016). He is a member of the Central Committee of the Dominican Liberation Party, the previous governing political party in Dominican Republic until August 16, 2020.

Edna Garrido Ramírez, also known as Edna Garrido de Boggs, was a Dominican educator, researcher and folklorist. She is considered a pioneer in the studies of Dominican folklore, for her field research on dances, sayings, riddles, oral tales, popular songs, children's games and other manifestations of folklore and ethnomusicology. She founded the first Dominican Folklore Society in 1946 in Santo Domingo.

Gonzalo Castillo Terrero is a Dominican businessman and politician. He was Minister of Public Works and Communications from 2012 to 2019. In July 2019 he sought the Dominican Liberation Party's presidential nomination for the 2020 elections. He won the nomination, but lost the general election to Luis Abinader.

The Odebrecht case is one of the largest corruption cases documented in recent Latin American history, spanning more than 30 years. It is based on an investigation by the United States Department of Justice, along with 10 other Latin American countries, into the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht. This investigation details how Odebrecht would have made bribes to presidents, former presidents and government officials of 12 countries: Angola, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, United States, Guatemala, Mexico, Mozambique, Panama, Peru, Dominican Republic and Venezuela, during the last 20 years, in order to obtain benefits in public contracting.

Roberto Álvarez Gil is a Dominican lawyer and diplomat. He became Foreign Minister of the Dominican Republic, in the government of President Luis Abinader in August 16, 2020. He is also a researcher and author of publications on human rights and international relations. In 2005, he was Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the Organization of American States.

The Odebrecht case in the Dominican Republic was a bribery and money-laundering scheme that was part of the wider Odebrecht case which began in Brazil and affected ten countries in Latin America. The Odebrecht case, in turn, was just one part of the sprawling Operation Car Wash scandal.
